New Covid complications.. Scary swell in the tongue of virus-infected person

Complications of Coronavirus appear to be never ending and new complications unfold day by day, with the United States witnessing nine cases of tongue enlargement of people all found to have been infected with the virus and receiving treatment with respirators in hospital.

According to Al-Hurra website two doctors from the U.S. state of Texas are working to solve the mystery behind an unusual condition of someone whose tongue swelled madly after contracting the new Coronavirus infection, where the story began last October, when the patient’s tongue, Anthony Jones, witnessed a large swell until it became “the size of a plate.”

Jones’s swelling prevented him from talking, swallowing food, and even breathing, normally, and Jones had developed an enlarged tongue after staying on the ventilator for several months due to COVID-19 last summer.

After being discharged from the hospital, Jones was unable to even close his mouth, his tongue pushed out his lower teeth, and relied on a feeding tube, according to the newspaper, and Jones’ case required the call of the tongue enlargement doctor, James Melville, who said he had monitored nine cases of tongue enlargement in Corona patients.

Melville noted that eight of those with enlarged tongues were African Americans, leading to the suspicion that there was a genetic difference that might be the cause of those cases, according to the Houston Chronicle.

While University of Texas Associate Professor Simon Young monitored the presence of an excess amount of inflammatory cells on Jones’ tongue after examining it under a microscope, Young said that “if you can determine the cause, if we find an underlying genetic difference, we can use this as a vital indicator” in the treatment of future conditions.

ووفقا لموقع “الحرة “الأمريكية يعمل طبيبان من ولاية تكساس الأميركية على حل اللغز الكامن وراء حالة غير مألوفة، لشخص تضخم لسانه بشكل جنوني بعد إصابته بعدوى فيروس كورونا المستجد، حيث بدأت القصة في أكتوبر الماضي، عندما شهد لسان المريض، آنتوني جونز، تضخما كبيرا إلى أن أصبح “بحجم طبق”.

كما أن التضخم الذي أصاب جونز حال دون تمكنه من الحديث وبلع الطعام، بل وحتى التنفس، بشكل طبيعي ، وكان جونز قد أصيب بتضخم اللسان بعد مكوثه لعدة أشهر على جهاز التنفس الاصطناعي بسبب إصابته بكوفيد-19، الصيف الماضي.

وبعد خروجه من المستشفى، لم يتمكن جونز من إغلاق فمه حتى، ودفع لسانه أسنانه السفلية خارجا، واعتمد على أنبوب للتغذية، وفقا للصحيفة، وتطلبت حالة جونز استدعاء الطبيب المتخصص بحالات تضخم اللسان، جيمس ملفيل، الذي قال إنه رصد 9 حالات تضخم للسان لدى مرضى كورونا.

هذا ولاحظ ملفيل أن 8 من المصابين بتضخم اللسان كانوا من الأميركيين الأفارقة، ما دفع نحو الظن بوجود اختلاف جيني قد يكون سببا لتلك الحالات، بحسب صحيفة “هيوستن كرونيكل”.

في حين رصد البروفيسور المساعد في جامعة تكساس، سيمون يونغ، وجود كمية زائدة من الخلايا الالتهابية على لسان جونز بعد فحصه تحت المجهر، وقال يونغ إنه “لو تمكنت من تحديد السبب، لو وجدنا اختلاف جيني أساسي كامن، سيمكننا استخدام ذلك كمؤشر حيوي” في علاج حالات مستقبلية.
