Here’s a list of the world’s most expensive and cheapest cities for newcomers

Ashgabat in Turkmenistan is the most expensive city in the world for foreign workers, according to this year’s Mercer Cost of Living Ranking.

According to CNN, the annual report ranks 209 cities based on the relative cost of expenses, including housing, mobility, food and entertainment, with New York City used as the baseline for comparison.

Turkmenistan’s capital, which ranked second on last year’s list, is an atypical case in the top 10, mostly involving trade centers such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Zurich and Singapore.

Mercer cited Turkmenistan’s ongoing financial crisis, which has led to food shortages and hyperinflation, as the reason for the high cost of living in Ashgabat over the past years.

The biggest change in Mercer’s survey may be Beirut’s advancing from the 45th position as the most expensive city for international workers in 2020 to become the third most expensive city of 2021.

Mercer attributes this progress to Lebanon’s economic recession, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and Beirut port explosion in August last year.

At the same time, with the Euro rising by nearly 11% against the US dollar, European cities have been rated relatively more expensive than their US counterparts.

This led New York City to exit Mercer’s top 10 cities, while Paris rose from 50th in 2020 to 33rd in 2021.

Cheapest cities
For the cheapest cities for foreign workers, Mercer’s ranking referred to Tbilisi in Georgia (207th), Lusaka in Zambia (208) and Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan (209).

This year’s rankings have also been influenced by changing business models in the wake of the pandemic, said Vince Cordova, one of Mercer’s international mobility leaders. From travel restrictions, the broad adoption of the home-based business model and the status of Covid-19, which varies from country to country, some companies resort to international remote employment rather than transporting workers to another country.

“As the types of international tasks change, this leads to changes in demand for certain goods and services,” Cordova said.

Cordova also mentioned the impact of China’s “rapid but uneven” recovery from Covid-19 on this year’s results, saying, “It is the only major economy that has grown in 2020,” noting that this has led chinese cities to reach higher rankings.

ويعزو “ميرسر” هذا التطور إلى الكساد الاقتصادي في لبنان، والذي تفاقم بسبب جائحة فيروس كورونا “كوفيد -19″، وانفجار مرفأ بيروت في أغسطس من العام الماضي.

وفي الوقت نفسه، مع ارتفاع اليورو بنسبة 11% تقريباً مقابل الدولار الأمريكي، تم تصنيف المدن الأوروبية بأنها أغلى نسبياً من نظيراتها في الولايات المتحدة.

وأدى ذلك إلى خروج مدينة نيويورك من قائمة المدن العشرة الأولى لـ”ميرسر”، بينما ارتفعت باريس من المرتبة الـ50 في عام 2020 إلى المرتبة 33 في عام 2021.

أرخص مدن
وبالنسبة لأرخص المدن للعمال الأجانب، فقد أشار ترتيب “ميرسر” إلى تبليسي في جورجيا (المرتبة 207)، ولوساكا في زامبيا (208)، وبيشكيك في قيرغيزستان (209).

وقال أحد قادة التنقل الدولي في “ميرسر”، فينس كوردوفا إن تصنيفات هذا العام قد تأثرت أيضاً بنماذج الأعمال المُتغيرة في أعقاب الجائحة. ومن قيود السفر، والتبني الواسع لنموذج العمل من المنزل، ووضع “كوفيد-19” الذي يختلف من بلد إلى آخر، تلجأ بعض الشركات للتوظيف الدولي عن بُعد بدلاً من نقل العمال إلى بلد آخر.

وقال كوردوفا: “مع تغير أنواع المهام الدولية، يؤدي هذا إلى إحداث تغييرات في الطلب على سلع وخدمات معينة”.

وذكر كوردوفا أيضاً تأثير تعافي الصين “السريع ولكن غير المتكافئ” من “كوفيد-19” على نتائج هذا العام، وقال: “إنه الاقتصاد الرئيسي الوحيد الذي حقق نمواً في عام 2020″، مشيراً إلى أن ذلك أدى إلى تسلق المدن الصينية لمرتبات أعلى.
