Italian artist sells “invisible” sculpture for $18, 000

Can you buy or sell something that doesn’t exist?! That’s exactly what the Italian artist Salvatore Garau did, recently selling an invisible sculpture at an auction for 15,000 euros (more than $18,000)

In a report published by Newsweek, according to Al Jazeera Net, writer Sarah Santora says Garau, 67, set the initial price of the sculpture, which does not exist between 6,000 and 9,000 euros, before raising the price after receiving several offers.

** “Immaterial” sculpture

the artwork, titled lo sono (which translates to “I am”), is a sculpture that is “immaterial”, i.e. it does not exist in the first place. The Italian artist has been criticized for selling something that does not exist, but argued that his artwork is not “nothing”, but “emptiness”.

“The void is nothing more than a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that nothing has a weight,” he told the Spanish news outlet Diario AS. “Therefore, it has energy that is condensed and transformed into particles, that is, into us.”

Italy24news reported that Garau demanded that the sculpture be placed in a private house within an area about 5 feet long and 5 feet wide. In the absence of the art piece in the first place, there is no need for any special lighting or specific climatic conditions to preserve it.

** What will the buyer get?

Multiple news reports indicated that the only concrete thing the buyer would receive is a signed and sealed title certificate from Garau.

The author added that this work is not the first invisible sculpture sold by Garau, and last month the Italian artist displayed another non-material sculpture called “Buddha in Contemplation”, “displayed” it in Milan’s Della Scala Square, and posted a video of the “sculpture” on his Instagram page.

The video states that the sculpture “exists now and will remain in this space forever. You don’t see it, but it does. It’s made of air and spirit.” According to Garau, the sculpture aims to “stimulate” the viewer’s imagination.

“When I decide to display an immaterial sculpture in a given space, that space will gather a certain amount of ideas at a specific point, creating a sculpture that takes on the most diverse shapes, as shown by the name of his choice,” Garau told AS of his invisible sculptures.

وفي تقرير نشرته مجلة “نيوزويك” (newsweek) الأميركية، بحسب الجزيرة نت، تقول الكاتبة سارة سانتورا إن غاراو (67 عاما) حدد السعر الأولي للمنحوتة غير الموجودة بين 6 آلاف و9 آلاف يورو، قبل أن يرفع السعر بعد أن وصلته العديد من العروض.

** منحوتة “غير مادية”

ويحمل العمل اسم “أنا” باللغة الإيطالية (Io Sono)، وهي منحوتة “غير مادية”، أي أنها غير موجودة أساسا. وقد تعرض الفنان الإيطالي للكثير من الانتقادات بسبب بيع شيء غير موجود، لكنه جادل بأن عمله الفني ليس “لا شيء”، بل هو “الفراغ”.

وقال غاراو لصحيفة “آس” الإسبانية إن “الفراغ ليس أكثر من مساحة مليئة بالطاقة، وحتى لو أفرغناه ولم يتبق شيء، فإن اللاشيء له وزن، وذلك وفقا لمبدأ الريبة لهايزنبرغ. لذلك، فإن اللاشيء له طاقة تتكثف وتتحول إلى جسيمات في داخلنا”.

وذكر موقع “إيطاليا 24 نيوز” (italy24news) أن غاراو طالب بوضع المنحوتة في منزل خاص ضمن مساحة يبلغ طولها حوالي 5 أقدام وعرضها 5 أقدام. ونظرا لعدم وجود القطعة الفنية من الأساس، فلا داعي لأي إضاءة من نوع خاص أو ظروف مناخية محددة للحفاظ عليها.

** على ماذا سيحصل المشتري؟

وأشارت تقارير إخبارية متعددة إلى أن الشيء الوحيد الملموس الذي سيحصل عليه المشتري، هو شهادة ملكية موقعة ومختومة من غاراو.

وأضافت الكاتبة أن هذا العمل ليس أول منحوتة غير مرئية يبيعها غاراو، ففي الشهر الماضي عرض الفنان الإيطالي منحوتة أخرى غير مادية أطلق عليها اسم “بوذا متأملا”، و”عرضها” في ساحة ديلا سكالا بمدينة ميلانو، ونشر مقطع فيديو “للمنحوتة” على صفحته في إنستغرام.

ويذكر الفيديو أن المنحوتة “موجودة الآن وستبقى في هذا الفضاء إلى الأبد. أنت لا تراها لكنها موجودة. إنها مصنوعة من الهواء والروح”. وتهدف المنحوتة -وفقا لغاراو- إلى “تحفيز” خيال المشاهد.

ويقول غاراو لصحيفة “آس” عن منحوتاته غير المرئية “عندما أقرر عرض منحوتة غير مادية في مساحة معينة، فإن تلك المساحة ستجمع قدرا من الأفكار في نقطة محددة، مما يخلق منحوتة تتخذ الأشكال الأكثر تنوعا، حسب ما يُظهره الاسم الذي أختار.
