Why aren’t Coronavirus rapid tests adopted for travellers

Doha: Dr. Naima Al Mawlawi, clinical consultant at Hamad Medical Corporation’s Molecular Virology Laboratory, said the reason new tests recently announced to detect Covid 19 for travellers are not adopted is because they are less accurate than PCR testing.

On the difference between previous and new tests of Coronavirus that have been recently adopted, Dr. Naima Al Mawlawi explained during the social distance program on Qatar TV on Monday evening that the rapid diagnostic antigen test is an examination that detects a protein found in the composition of the virus and that the type of sample is through a nasal swab, while a rapid diagnostic test of antibodies detects antibodies formed by the body and the immune system against the virus, and that the sample required is a drop of blood from the finger prick and both tests are rapid, with results coming out within 15 minutes.

On the accuracy of the results of the new tests for Coronavirus, Dr. Naima Al-Mawlawi said that these tests were evaluated and approved and that WHO said that if these tests give accuracy above 80%, they can be used, and the result of the evaluations we carried out was above 80%, therefore, they can be used to examine Covid 19.

Asked why these tests are not approved for those who want to travel if they have proven successful and their accuracy is more than 80%, Dr. Naima Al-Mawlawi said: This examination was not approved for travellers by the World Health Organization and the Center for Transitional Diseases, because the PCR test has a digital result, if it is over 30, this means the person is non-contagious and under 30 the person is contagious, but this examination does not give a result above 25 and gives a negative result, meaning that if the person is carrying the virus at the beginning of the infection, it will give you a negative result because the amount of viruses is small and therefore the protein is slight in the sample so the person is carrying the virus at the beginning and the result of the test is negative and this poses a risk to the passengers, and to those in the plane, and will mix with other passengers at other airports and in order to avoid this, a more accurate test must be conducted which is a “PCR” test and it is available.

الدوحة: قالت الدكتورة نعيمة المولوي، استشاري إكلينيكي في مختبر الفيروسات الجزيئية بمؤسسة حمد الطبية إن سبب عدم اعتماد الفحوصات الجديدة التي تم الإعلان عنها مؤخراً للكشف عن “كوفيد 19″ للمسافرين يعود إلى أنها أقل دقة من فحص الـ”بي سي آر”.

وبشأن الفارق بين الفحوصات السابقة والجديدة لكورونا التي تم اعتمادها مؤخراً، أوضحت الدكتورة نعيمة المولوي خلال برنامج المسافة الاجتماعية على تلفزيون قطر مساء اليوم الإثنين أن الفحص التشخيصي السريع للمستضدات هو فحص يقوم بالكشف عن بروتين موجود في تركيبة الفيروس وأن نوع العينة تكون عن طريق مسحة الأنف، بينما الفحص التشخيصي السريع للأجسام المضادة يقوم بالكشف عن الأجسام المضادة التي يكونها الجسم والجهاز المناعي ضد الفيروس، وأن العينة المطلوبة هي قطرة دم من وخز الإصبع وكلا الفحصين سريعين حيث تظهر النتائج خلال 15 دقيقة بشكل واضح.

وحول مدى دقة نتائج الفحوصات الجديدة لكورونا، قالت الدكتورة نعيمة المولوي إنه تم تقييم هذه الفحوصات واعتمادها وإن منظمة الصحة العالمية قالت إذا كانت هذه الفحوصات تعطي دقة فوق الـ80% فأجازت استخدامها، والتقييمات التي قمنا بها جاءت نتيجتها فوق الـ80% فيمكن استخدامها لفحص كوفيد 19.

ورداً على سؤال لماذا لا يتم اعتماد هذه الفحوصات لمن يريد السفر إذا كانت أثبتت نجاحها وأن دقتها أكثر من 80%، قالت الدكتورة نعيمة المولوي : هذا الفحص لم يُعتمد للمسافرين من قبل منظمة الصحة العالمية ومركز الأمراض الانتقالية، لأن فحص الـ”بي سي آر” نتيجته رقمية، فإذا كان فوق الـ30 يكون غير معدي وتحت الـ30 يكون معدياً، أما هذا الفحص فوق الـ25 لا يعطي نتيجة ويعطي نتيجة سلبية، بمعنى أنه إذا كان الشخص حاملاً للفيروس في بداية العدوى سيعطيك نتيجة سلبية لأن كمية الفيروسات تكون قليلة وبالتالي البروتين يكون قليلاً في العينة فيكون الشخص حاملاً للفيروس في بدايته ونتيجة الفحص تكون سلبية وهذا يشكل خطورة على المسافرين، وعلى الموجودين في الطائرة، وسوف يختلط بمسافرين آخرين في مطارات أخرى ولكي نتجنب ذلك لابد من إجراء فحص يكون أكثر دقة وهو فحص “بي سي آر” وهو متوفر.
