Who is the first U.S. president to host a Ramadan iftar feast at the White House?

U.S. President Barack Obama may be the most famous for holding Ramadan iftar feasts for Muslims at the White House, but he is not the first U.S. president to welcome Muslims to celebrate the holy month.
In 1805, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson was the first to host an iftar at the White House, where Jefferson received during the holy month of Ramadan the Tunisian envoy Sidi Suleiman Melimli at the White House, according to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.
“He was on a diplomatic mission and in respect of Melmelli’s beliefs, Jefferson changed the meal time from exactly 3:30 p.m. to sunset,” the U.S. Embassy said in a Facebook post. “The continued diplomacy of the Jefferson administration during the envoy’s time in America led to a breakthrough and significant improvement in relations between the two countries.”
At the beginning of Ramadan, U.S. President Joe Biden and his wife Jill paid “warmest greetings” and “best wishes” to Muslim communities in the United States and around the world, on the occasion of Ramadan, using phrases such as “Ramadan Karim” and “inshallah” in Arabic, and citing a verse from the Holy Quran.
“We remember how difficult this year is as a large number of our American brothers begin to fast,” Biden said. “Friends and loved ones cannot come together to celebrate and meet in the midst of this epidemic, and many families will sit down for Iftar without the loved ones they have lost.”
“However, our Muslim communities begin this month with renewed hope. Many will focus on strengthening their awareness of God’s existence in their lives, reaffirming their commitment to serving others as imposed on them by their faith and expressing their gratitude for their blessings, namely health, well-being and life itself.”?
ربما يكون الرئيس الأمريكي باراك أوباما أشهر من أقام حفلات إفطار المسلمين الأمريكيين في البيت الأبيض، غير أنه ليس الرئيس الأمريكي الأول الذي يرحب بالمسلمين للاحتفال بالشهر الفضيل.
ووفقا لوكالة سبوتنيك الروسية فإنه في عام 1805 كان الرئيس الأمريكي توماس جفرسون أول من استضاف حفل إفطار في البيت الأبيض، حيث استقبل جيفرسون في البيت الأبيض خلال شهر رمضان المبارك المبعوث التونسي سيدي سليمان مليملي بحسب السفارة الأمريكية في القاهرة.
وأوضحت السفارة الأمريكية في منشور على صفحتها بموقع فيسبوك:” كان في مهمة دبلوماسية وفي احترام لمعتقدات مليملي، غيّر جيفرسون وقت الوجبة من الساعة 3:30 مساءً المعتادة بالتحديد عند غروب الشمس”، متابعة”أدت الدبلوماسية المستمرة لإدارة جيفرسون خلال فترة وجود المبعوث في أمريكا إلى انفراج وتحسن العلاقات بشكل كبير بين البلدين”.
وفي بداية شهر رمضان، وجه الرئيس الأمريكي جو بايدن وزوجته جيل “أحر التحيات” و”أطيب التمنيات” إلى المجتمعات المسلمة في الولايات المتحدة وحول العالم، بمناسبة حلول شهر رمضان، مستخدما عبارات مثل “رمضان كريم” و”إن شاء الله” بالعربية، كما استشهد بآية من القرآن الكريم.
وقال بايدن: “نتذكر مدى صعوبة هذا العام فيما يبدأ عدد كبير من إخواننا الأمريكيين الصوم. لا يستطيع الأصدقاء والأحباء أن يجتمعوا معا للاحتفال واللقاء في ظل هذا الوباء، وستجلس عائلات كثيرة لتناول الإفطار من دون أحبائهم الذين فقدوهم”.
وأضاف: “لكن مع ذلك، تبدأ مجتمعاتنا المسلمة هذا الشهر بأمل متجدد. سيركز كثيرون على تعزيز وعيهم بوجود الله في حياتهم وإعادة تأكيد التزامهم بخدمة الآخرين التي يفرضها عليهم إيمانهم والتعبير عن امتنانهم للبركات التي يتمتعون بها، ألا وهي الصحة والرفاه والحياة نفسها”.
