Doha: New Weill Cornell College of Medicine-Qatar research has found the possibility that one of the most common diabetes medications in the world can reduce the chances of people with Covid-19 being hospitalized or dying.
This drug is known and used to treat diabetes and it has been known for 60 years as Glucophage, said Dr. Samson Matthew Samuel, a research associate in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar – in an interview with the Social Distance Program on “Qatar TV” – said: The relationship between it and the Corona virus is that a lot of who they take this drug when they are exposed to the virus, even while they are under the influence of diabetes, it reduces the severity of the infection that comes to them, and this is what was explained in the research paper.
He added that Glucophage treatment is given to diabetics and helps reduce the severity of Coronavirus, noting that research has found that those who have diabetes are susceptible to severe infection and have an increased death rate, but this drug controls blood glucose levels and thus the virus can be treated more easily.

الدوحة: توصل بحث جديد لكلية وايل كورنيل قطر للطب إلى إمكانية أن يسهم أحد أكثر أدوية السكري شيوعاً في العالم في تقليل فرص إدخال المصابين بفيروس كوفيد- 19 إلى المستشفيات أو وفاتهم.
وقال الدكتور سامسون ماثيو صاموئيل باحث مشارك في قسم علم وظائف الأعضاء والفيزياء الحيوية كلية طب وايل كورنيل في قطر – في مقابلة مع برنامج المسافة الاجتماعية على “تليفزيون قطر” – هذا العقار معروف ومستخدم لمعالجة السكري وهو معروف منذ 60 عاما باسم جلوكوفاج، وأشار إلى أن العلاقة بينه وبين فيروس كورونا هو أن كثيرا مما يأخذون هذا العقار عندما يتعرضوا للفيروس حتى وهم تحت تأثير السكري فإنه يقلل من شدة الإصابة التي تأتي لهم وهذا ما وضح في الورقة البحثية.
أضاف أن علاج جلوكوفاج يعطي للمصابين للسكري ويساعد في تخفيف حدة وشدة كورونا، لاقتاً إلى أن البحث توصل إلى أن من لديهم سكري عرضة للإصابة الشديدة وتزداد لديهم نسبة الوفاة، ولكن هذا الدواء يسيطر على نسبة الجلوكوز في الدم وبالتالي يمكن معالجة الفيروس بشكل أسهل.
