EMA releases new statement on controversial AstraZeneca vaccine

Doha: Experts investigating a possible link between AstraZeneca’s vaccine against coronavirus and blood clotting or thrombosis have not found any specific risk factors, including age-related, the European Medicines Agency said Wednesday, but are continuing their tests.

According to Deutsche Welle website, the agency stated that its safety committee will issue “updated recommendations” on the controversial vaccine after its monthly meeting next week. “Studies have not at this time identified any specific risk factors such as age, sex or medical records involving thrombosis problems in these very rare cases,” the agency said in a statement, adding that “no causal link has been established with the vaccine, but this is possible and additional analyses are under way.”

On Tuesday, Germany decided to restrict vaccinations using AstraZeneca vaccine for people under the age of 60 following reports of the vaccine’s link to blood clots, on the recommendation of the country’s Permanent Vaccination Committee.

The expert committee at the Robert Koch Institute for Virus Research said that the data currently available indicate “rare but extremely serious side effects for thrombosis”, and said that these effects mostly appeared among people under 60 years of age between 4 and 16 days after vaccination.

The European Agency issued a statement after a meeting of experts on Monday to present their latest assessments of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which will be considered next week at the safety committee meeting. The European regulator reiterated on March 18th that “its benefits in protecting people from Covid-19, with the risk of death and hospitalization, outweigh the potential risks.”

For its part, The British-Swedish Company AstraZeneca said in a statement that it respects Germany’s decision to restrict its vaccine, noting that investigations by British-European regulators “have not been able to establish a link between the vaccine and the occurrence of clots”.

“Regulators in the UK, the EU and WHO have found that the benefits of using our vaccine to protect against this deadly virus far outweigh the risks to all age groups,” the company said.

A Reuters count today showed that more than 128.33 million people have been infected with the new coronavirus worldwide, while the total number of deaths from the virus has reached 2 million and 932,700 since the first cases were detected in China in December 2019.

الدوحة: أعلنت الوكالة الأوروبية للأدوية، يوم الأربعاء، أن الخبراء الذين يحققون في احتمال وجود رابط بين لقاح أسترازينيكا ضد فيروس كورونا وحالات تخثر في الدم أو جلطة لم يجدوا أي عوامل خطر محددة بما في ذلك على ارتباط بالعمر، غير أنهم يواصلون تحاليلهم.

وأوضحت الوكالة، بحسب موقع دويتشه فيله الألماني، أن لجنة السلامة التابعة لها ستصدر “توصيات محدثة” بشأن اللقاح المثير للجدل بعد اجتماعها الشهري المقرر عقده الأسبوع المقبل. وأفادت  في بيان “لم تحدد الدراسات في الوقت الحاضر أي عوامل خطر محددة مثل العمر أو الجنس أو ماض طبي يتضمن مشكلات جلطات في هذه الحالات النادرة جداً” التي أفيد عنها لدى أشخاص تلقوا لقاح أسترازينيكا، مضيفة أنه “لم يتم إثبات وجود صلة سببية مع اللقاح، لكن هذا ممكن وثمة تحليلات إضافية جارية”.

والثلاثاء، قررت ألمانيا تقييد التطعيمات باستخدام لقاح أسترازينيكا للأشخاص الذين تقل أعمارهم عن 60 عاماً بعد تقارير بشأن علاقة اللقاح بحدوث جلطات دموية، وذلك بناء على توصية لجنة التطعيم الدائمة في البلاد.

وأعلنت لجنة الخبراء الموجودة في معهد روبرت كوخ لأبحاث الفيروسات أن البيانات المتاحة في الوقت الراهن تشير إلى ظهور ” تأثيرات جانبية نادرة لكنها خطيرة للغاية لحالات الانضمام الخثاري”، وقالت إن هذه التأثيرات ظهرت في غالبيتها بين أشخاص قلت أعمارهم عن 60 عاماً في فترة تتراوح بين 4 إلى 16 يوما بعد التطعيم.

وكانت الوكالة الأوروبية أصدرت بياناً بعد اجتماع للخبراء الإثنين لتقديم أحدث تقييماتهم للقاح أسترازينيكا، والتي سيتم النظر فيها الأسبوع المقبل في اجتماع لجنة السلامة. وكررت هذه الهيئة الأوروبية الناظمة ما أعلنته في 18 مارس بأن “منافعه في حماية الأشخاص من كوفيد-19، مع مخاطر الوفاة وحالات الاستشفاء، تتفوّق على المخاطر المحتملة”.

من جانبها قالت شركة أسترازينيكا البريطانية- السويدية في بيان إنها تحترم قرار ألمانيا فيما يتعلق بتقييد لقاحها، مشيرة إلى أن تحقيقات الجهات المنظمة البريطانية الأوروبية ” لم تستطع إيجاد علاقة بين اللقاح وحدوث جلطات”.

وأضافت الشركة: “الهيئات المنظمة في المملكة المتحدة والاتحاد الأوروبي ومنظمة الصحة العالمية توصلت إلى أن فوائد استخدام لقاحنا للحماية من هذا الفيروس المميت تفوق بصورة كبيرة مخاطره على جميع الفئات العمرية”.

وأظهر إحصاء لرويترز اليوم أن ما يزيد على 128.33 مليون نسمة أُصيبوا بفيروس كورونا المستجد على مستوى العالم، في حين وصل إجمالي عدد الوفيات الناتجة عن الفيروس إلى مليونين و932700  منذ اكتشاف أولى حالات الإصابة في الصين في ديسمبر 2019.
