Vaccine-Accessibility Battle Heats Up between EU and Britain

Doha: The battle for obtaining quotas of CORONA vaccines continues in more than one place, as major countries move further to expand vaccination campaigns, with the United States vaccinating more than 130 million Americans and planning to reach 200 million before President Joe Biden’s 100-day term ends, while China has accelerated its campaign to an average of 5.5 million doses per day.

Before taking office, Biden set a goal of vaccinating 100 million Americans during his first 100 days in office, which was achieved last week. In a related context, a research group from the Brookings Institution found that the United States could have avoided nearly 400,000 deaths if it had adopted a “more effective” health strategy. According to Andrew Atkinson, an economics professor at the University of California who co-authored the study, the number of deaths in the United States could have remained below 300,000 if the country had adopted the widespread wearing of protective masks and adopted social distancing since May. China’s National Health Committee said yesterday that Beijing had given 91.35 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to its citizens as of Thursday, March 25th, up from about 85.86 million by Wednesday. Reuters calculations based on official data showed an increase of about 5.5 million doses given on Thursday, a significant jump from the daily average of 2.6 million doses from March 21st to 23rd.

من جهته شدد الاتحاد الأوروبي، الأربعاء الماضي، الرقابة على تصدير اللقاحات المضادة لفيروس كورونا من أراضيه إلى دول أخرى، ولا سيما المملكة المتحدة. وقال فالديس دومبروفسكيس نائب رئيس المفوضية الأوروبية في مؤتمر صحفي، إن الاتحاد الأوروبي يواجه وضعا وبائيا خطيرا جدا، بينما يستمر في تصدير كميات كبيرة إلى دول تنتج لقاحاتها الخاصة أو تسجل تقدما في حملات التطعيم. وتم تشديد الآلية الحالية للإشراف على الصادرات ضمانا لإمدادات الدول الـ27 الأعضاء في الاتحاد. في المقابل أثارت الآلية غضب المملكة المتحدة. وأعلن مارك روته رئيس الوزراء الهولندي، أن بروكسل ولندن يمكن أن تتوصلا اعتبارا من اليوم السبت إلى اتفاق بهذا الصدد. كما أعلنت أورسولا فون دير لاين رئيسة المفوضية الأوروبية، أن شركة أسترازينيكا لن تتمكن من تصدير أي من جرعات لقاحها المضاد لكوفيد – 19، المصنّعة على الأراضي الأوروبية إلى خارج التكتل، قبل أن يتسلم كامل الكميات المتأخرة من هذا اللقاح. ودعت فون دير لاين، الشركة أن تعوض عن تأخيرها وتحترم العقد الذي أبرمته مع الدول الأوروبية الأعضاء، قبل تصدير اللقاحات مرة أخرى.

وقالت لجنة الصحة الوطنية في الصين امس إن بكين أعطت 91.35 مليون جرعة من لقاحات كوفيد – 19 لمواطنيها حتى الخميس 25 مارس، ارتفاعا من حوالي 85.86 مليون بحلول الأربعاء. وأظهرت حسابات لرويترز تستند إلى بيانات رسمية زيادة تقارب 5.5 مليون جرعة أعطيت يوم الخميس، في قفزة كبيرة عن المتوسط اليومي البالغ 2.6 مليون جرعة خلال الفترة من 21 إلى 23 مارس.
