San Salvador: El Salvadoran surfer Katherine Diaz has been killed after being struck by lightning while training for a qualifying tournament for the Tokyo Olympics.
According to local media, the 22-year-old Diaz was struck by lightning as she entered the water at El Tunco Beach, about 16 kilometers from the capital San Salvador, last Friday. ” Katherine embodied the joy and energy that make surfing so special and dear to us all, as a global ambassador of the sport,” said the International Surfing Association.
Diaz was preparing for the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games, which are scheduled to take place between May 29th and June 6th in her home country.
