Facebook Considers Facial Recognition For Smart Glasses

San Francisco: As the American company Facebook prepares to roll out its first smart glasses later this year, the company’s employees are now discussing the possibility of adding facial recognition technology to the glasses.
Technology specialist BuzzFeed News quoted that Andrew Bosworth Bose, who is in charge of augmented reality technology and virtual reality at Facebook, told the company’s employees that Facebook was currently considering the legal aspects of protecting privacy associated with the use of facial recognition technology.
According to BuzzFeed News, a Facebook employee asked the CEO in charge of developing facial recognition technology about concerns about the potential harm of using such technology, Bosworth told the Facebook employee that “Face recognition … might be the thorniest issue, where the benefits are so clear, and the risks are so clear, and we don’t know where to balance those things.”
In a series of tweets, Bosworth confirmed that he talked about facial recognition technology during a meeting with Facebook staff and Tweeted, “I specifically said that the upcoming smart glasses product would be good without Facial recognition technology. but in some cases it would be better used if it were done in a way that ensured the satisfaction of people and regulatory authorities.”
Bosworth added that Smart glasses with facial recognition technology might be useful in knowing the name of someone you were talking to without the mention of his name, for example. He also referred to a condition known as loss of facial recognition, in which a person has difficulty identifying familiar faces that should be known to him.

وبحسب موقع بوز فيد نيوز فإن أحد موظفي فيسبوك سأل المدير التنفيذي المسؤول عن تطوير تكنولوجيا التعرف على الوجه عن المخاوف المتعلقة بالأضرار المحتملة لاستخدام مثل هذه التكنولوجيا، فقال بوسورث للموظف إن “التعرف على الوجوه … قد يكون المشكلة الشائكة ، حيث الفوائد واضحة جدًا ، والمخاطر واضحة جدًا ، ولا نعرف أين توجد نقطة التوازن بين هذه الأشياء”.
وفي سلسلة تغريدات أكد بووسورث أنه تحدث عن تكنولوجيا التعرف على الوجه خلال اجتماع مع موظفي فيسبوك وكتب على موقع تويتر “أنا قلت بالتحديد إن المنتج المنتظر (النظارة الذكية) سيكون جيدا بدونها
(تكنولوجيا التعرف على الوجه)، لكنه سيكون أفضل استخدام لهذه التكنولوجيا في بعض الحالات إذا تم ذلك بطريقة تضمن رضا الناس والسلطات الرقابية”.
وأضاف أن النظارة المزودة بتكنولوجيا التعرف على الوجه قد تكون مفيدة في معرفة اسم شخص تتحدث إليه ولكن لا تذكر اسمه على سبيل المثال. كما أشار إلى حالة مرضية تعرف باسم فقدان القدرة على التعرف على الوجوه وفيها يعاني الشخص من صعوبة التعرف على الوجوه المألوفة لديه والمعروفة له.
