World Tourism Organization confirms $1,300 billion loss of tourism sector due to Covid-19

MADRID: The World Tourism Organization (WTO) estimated the world’s tourism sector’s losses over the past year due to the fallout from the Corona pandemic by about US$1,300 billion, saying the sector’s troubles are likely to continue for further years until it regains its previous levels.

In a statement, the UN Organization said the figure represented “11 times more losses than during the global economic crisis in 2009,” noting that the world’s tourist flow fell by 74 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.

“2020 was the worst year in the history of world tourism, especially as it recorded a 1 billion drop in the number of tourists worldwide compared to 2019,” it said, adding that during the 2008-2009 global economic crisis, the number of tourists fell by only 4 percent.

The World Tourism Organization (WTO) also said that with the high threat of losing between 100 and 120 million direct jobs in tourism, mostly in small and medium-sized enterprises, the prospects for improving world tourism this year are “out of the question,”and it will take two and a half to four years to return to 2019 levels.”

The Asia-Pacific region is among the regions most affected by the pandemic after the number of tourists fell last year to – 84 percent, likely to continue in the region, especially as more stringent travel restrictions continue to be imposed, it said.

With regard to the tourism situation in Europe, the UN Organization said in its statement that the countries of the continent recorded a decline in tourist numbers by 70%, explaining that the “old” continent experienced “the largest decline in numbers, with the loss of 500 million visitors”, while the Middle East and Africa recorded a decline of 75% and the Americas by 69%.

In 2020, the world’s various economic sectors experienced a significant decline in their performance due to the repercussions of the Corona pandemic, and the vast majority of countries resorted to closure policy to reduce the spread of virus infection among their citizens.

وأوضحت المنظمة الأممية، في بيان، أن هذا الرقم يمثل “خسائر أكبر بـ 11 مرة من تلك المسجلة خلال الأزمة الاقتصادية العالمية في 2009″، مشيرة إلى تسجيل تراجع تدفق السياح في العالم بنسبة 74 في المائة في عام 2020 مقارنة مع سنة 2019.

وقالت إن “عام 2020 كان أسوأ عام في تاريخ السياحة العالمية، خاصة أنه سجل تراجعا في عدد السياح في العالم بمليار شخص مقارنة بسنة 2019″، مضيفة أنه خلال الأزمة الاقتصادية العالمية في 2008-2009 تراجع عدد السياح بنسبة 4 في المائة فقط.

كما اعتبرت منظمة السياحة العالمية أنه في ظل التهديدات الكبيرة بفقد ما بين 100 و120 مليون وظيفة مباشرة في السياحة، غالبيتها في الشركات الصغيرة والمتوسطة، يمكن القول إن آفاق تحسن السياحة في العالم خلال العام الجاري “غير واردة”، مؤكدة أن “السياحة العالمية ستحتاج لعامين ونصف إلى أربعة أعوام للعودة إلى مستويات 2019”.

ولفتت إلى أن منطقة آسيا-المحيط الهادئ تأتي على قائمة المناطق الأكثر تضررا من الجائحة بعد أن تراجع عدد السياح فيها خلال العام الماضي إلى /84-/ بالمائة، مرجحة تواصل الأمر في هذه المنطقة لاسيما في ظل استمرار فرض قيود أكثر صرامة على السفر.

وبخصوص الوضع السياحي في أوروبا، فقد قالت المنظمة الأممية، في بيانها، إن بلدان هذه القارة سجلت تراجعا في أعداد السياح بها بنسبة 70 في المائة، موضحة أن القارة “العجوز” شهدت “أكبر تراجع من حيث الأرقام إذ فقدت 500 مليون زائر”، فيما سجلت منطقة الشرق الأوسط وإفريقيا تراجعا بنسبة 75 في المائة، والأمريكيتان بنسبة 69 في المائة.

يذكر أن مختلف القطاعات الاقتصادية في العالم شهدت خلال العام 2020 تراجعا كبيرا في أدائها بسبب تداعيات جائحة كورونا، ولجوء الغالبية الساحقة من الدول إلى سياسة الاغلاق للحد من انتشار عدوى الفيروس بين مواطنيها.
