UK Raises $1 Billion to Help Vulnerable Countries Get COVID-19 Vaccines

London: Britain announced Sunday that it has helped raise one billion dollars from international donors to help vulnerable countries access vaccines against Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The UK Foreign Office said in a statement that it would allocate 250 million pounds as a contribution to the COVAX mechanism, which aims to reach vaccines to countries in need, in addition to the 548 million pounds that the UK allocated earlier, to distribute one billion doses of vaccines against Coronavirus to 92 countries this year.

The statement indicated that these funds will contribute to stopping the spread of this disease, prevent the spread of other waves, and thus help to recover better from the effects of the Coronavirus around the world.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said in a statement that the UK and its allies have played a leading role in providing 1 billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to “vulnerable countries.”

“We’ll only be safe from this virus, when we’re all safe — which is why we’re focused on a global solution to a global problem,” he added.

وأشار البيان إلى أن هذه المخصصات المالية “ستساهم في وقف انتشار هذا المرض، ومنع انتشار موجات أخرى منه، وبالتالي المساعدة في التعافي بشكل أفضل من آثار فيروس كورونا في أنحاء العالم”.

من جهة أخرى، قال السيد دومينيك راب، وزير الخارجية، إن المملكة المتحدة وحلفاءها “قاموا بدور قيادي في توفير مليار جرعة من اللقاح المضاد لفيروس كورونا للبلدان المحتاجة”، مضيفا أنه “لن نأمن من هذا الفيروس إلا إذا أصبحنا جميعا آمنين منه، ولهذا السبب ينصب تركيزنا على السعي إلى حل عالمي لهذه المشكلة العالمية.”

وكانت بريطانيا قد تعهدت في الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة في سبتمبر الماضي بأنها ستدفع مقابل كل 4 دولارات من المانحين الآخرين جنيها استرلينيا واحدا، دعما لمبادرة /كوفاكس/، التي ساهمت فيها دول أخرى.
