Japanese company unveils new system that identifies individuals despite masks

Doha: According to al-Qabas, the system was originally designed to meet the needs of people with allergies, where masks were common in Japan before the CORONA virus pandemic, but gained greater importance with the outbreak of the 2020 pandemic.
“The needs have grown further because of the coronavirus situation as the 2020 emergency has lasted for a long time, so we have introduced this technology to the market,” said Shinya Takashima, assistant director of digital platforms at NEC.
The system focuses on exposed parts of a person’s head, including eyes and areas of the cheekbones, to verify a person’s identity when compared to a facial record. People must send a picture in advance to use the system effectively. The company adds that verification takes less than one second and achieves a accuracy rate of more than 99.9%.

The system, combined with thermal imaging cameras at traffic gates, protects people outwardly by not forcing them to remove their masks to enter, while also preventing them from having a safety card or from touching any surfaces and possibly contacting germs and pathogens. Passengers must record their photos and passport information, using mobile phone apps from each company before arriving at airports. NEC explains that customer names are not preserved, but facial images and passenger personal information are encrypted and stored safely on its platform.

وتضيف الشركة أن التحقق يستغرق أقل من ثانية واحدة، ويحقق معدل دقة يبلغ أكثر من 99.9% .

ويحمي النظام، المُدمج مع كاميرات التصوير الحراري عند بوابات المرور، الأشخاص ظاهرياً من خلال عدم إجبارهم على إزالة أقنعتهم للدخول، مع منعهم أيضاً من الحاجة إلى بطاقة مرور الأمان أو من لمس أي أسطح واحتمال ملامستها مع الجراثيم ومسببات الأمراض.
ويجب على الركاب تسجيل صور وجوههم ومعلومات جواز السفر، باستخدام تطبيقات الهاتف المحمول من كل شركة قبل وصولهم إلى المطارات.
وتوضح شركة NEC أن أسماء العملاء لا تُحفظ، ولكن صور الوجه والمعلومات الشخصية للركاب تُشفر وتخزن بأمان على نظامها الأساسي.
