NASA releases photos of spectacular fireworks to mark the end of 2020

Doha: NASA has decided to share some of the star fireworks to mark the end of an unforgettable year, with the U.S. agency publishing daily “Today’s Picture”, the last image it posted on December 31, as a palette of colors, displaying a composite image of the Mighty Nebula, taken by the Hubble Space telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope.

According to Arabi Post, these nebulaes, such as the Mighty Nebula, are astral incubators, i.e. huge clouds of gas and dust containing emerging stars at birth. 

Some nebulae are also formed with the death of the stars: as the star’s heart cools, it begins to emit its outer layers, which disperse to form gas clouds.

To the naked eye, the nebula will not look like a rainbow panel studded with light points (which usually refers to the formation of a new star).

When space telescopes like Hubble shoots the hydrogen, sulfur, and carbon molecules that form nebulae like The Mighty, they do not capture color, but instead record light particles, which NASA can then see, through different filters that allow certain wavelengths of color to pass. They then assign a color to each particle that passes through those filters (for example, the light that comes through the red filter is attributed red).

By combining the same nebula images that are seen using different filters, the agency can create a composite color image like the one it posted.

“We often use color as a tool, whether it’s to improve the details of an object or to visualize what the human eye can’t normally see,” NASA said.

The nearest nebula to Earth 

Our galaxy has nearly 3,000 nebulaes, while the nearest known nebula to our planet remains the Spiral Nebula, which is the cosmic remnant of a dying star.

It is about half the distance from the Mighty Nebula, specifically 700 light years away from Earth (so if you travel at the speed of light, it will take 700 years to get there).

The Hubble Space Telescope has been photographing nebulae for 30 years, and these images help scientists learn more about how these cosmic clouds have evolved, or even extinguished and diminished over time.

الدوحة: قررت الإدارة الوطنية للملاحة الجوية والفضاء الأمريكية (ناسا) مشاركة بعض الألعاب النارية النجمية احتفالاً بنهاية عام لا يُنسَى، إذ تنشر الوكالة الأمريكية يومياً “صورة اليوم”، وآخر صورة نشرتها كانت في 31 ديسمبر- كانون الأول، بمثابة لوحة من الألوان، وهي تعرض صورة مركَّبة لسديم الجبار، التقطها تلسكوب ” Hubble Space” وتلسكوب ” Spitzer Space”.

ووفقا لعربي بوست، فإنّ هذه السُّدم، مثل سديم الجبار، هي حاضنات نجمية، أي سحب ضخمة من الغاز والأتربة تحوي النجوم الناشئة عند مولدها. 

كما تتشكل بعض السُّدم مع موت النجوم: فمع برودة قلب النجم، يبدأ بلفظ طبقاته الخارجية، التي تتفرق لتُشكِّل سحباً غازية.

لوحة قوس قزح

للعين المجردة، لن يبدو السديم مثل لوحة قوس قزح مرصعة بنقاط ضوء (التي تشير عادةً إلى تشكيل نجم جديد).

عندما تُصوِّر التلسكوبات الفضائية مثل Hubble جزيئات الهيدروجين والكبريت والكربون التي تشكل السُّدم مثل الجبار، فإنها لا تلتقط اللون، بل بدلاً من ذلك، يسجل Hubble جزيئات الضوء، التي بإمكان وكالة ناسا رؤيتها بعد ذلك، من خلال مرشحات مختلفة تسمح بمرور أطوال موجية معينة من اللون. ثم يُعيِّنون لوناً لكل جسيم يمر عبر تلك المرشحات (فعلى سبيل المثال، الضوء الذي يأتي من خلال المرشح الأحمر يُنسَب له اللون الأحمر).

من خلال دمج صور السديم نفسه التي تُرَى باستخدام مُرشحات مختلفة، بإمكان الوكالة إنشاء صورة مركبة ملونة مثل تلك التي نشرتها.

وفي هذا السياق، قالت وكالة ناسا “غالباً ما نستخدم اللون كأداة، سواء كان ذلك لتحسين تفاصيل جسم ما أو وضع تصور لما لا يمكن أن تراه العين البشرية في العادة”

أقرب سديم للأرض 

تضم مجرتنا ما يقرب من 3000 سديم، فيما يبقى أقرب سديم معروف إلى كوكبنا هو سديم اللولب، الذي تشكَّل من البقايا الكونية لنجمٍ محتضر.

يبعُد عن الأرض نصف المسافة تقريباً التي يبعُدها عنها سديم الجبار، وتحديداً 700 سنة ضوئية (لذلك إذا سافرت بسرعة الضوء، فستستغرق 700 عام للوصول إلى هناك). 

كما يعمل تلسكوب Hubble الفضائي على تصوير السُّدم منذ 30 عاماً، وتساعد هذه الصور العلماء على معرفة المزيد عن كيفية تطور هذه الغيوم الكونية، أو حتى انطفائها وتضاؤلها بمرور الوقت.
