Sport Science Program at QU Takes Leading Position in the Shanghai Global Ranking

Doha: The Sport Science Program (SSP) at Qatar University (QU) ranked in the top 151-200 worldwide for Sport Science Schools and Departments in the Shanghais Global Ranking 2020.

This achievement, once again, puts the SSP in a leading position in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA).

The SSP has made significant progress in research in the last few years, and was able to improve its ranking by at least 50 places compared to the 2018 Shanghai Global Ranking edition.

Although the SSP is a relatively small program, with only about 10 to 12 faculty members active in research, it competes with much bigger units worldwide such as sport colleges or schools and sport universities, QU has said.

Over the last three years, the research outcomes have almost doubled. In 2019, the program reached an average of about 5 published articles per faculty in reputable journals and publishers. Most publications are in top-tier journals (Q1 and Q2) and open-access; with a median impact factor of around 2.4. This excellent quality of publications assisted the SSP in increasing its visibility and ranking.

To capitalize on the expertise and national/international networks of faculty in SSP and partners at QU and within the Sport Science Community in Qatar, the SSP initiated Research Units in 2017 with the aim of increasing contribution of knowledge on sport and exercise matters related to Qatar and the region.

Director of Sport Science Program Dr. Mahfoud Amara said, “This new milestone would not be possible without the hard work of faculty, support staff and students in the Sport Science Program. Thanks also to the continuous support of the College of Arts and Sciences, and partners and collaborators in research and publications at Qatar University and internationally.”

For her part, Dr. Lina Majed, Chair of Research Enabling Committee in Sport Science Program commented saying, “We expect a further improvement in the research output of the SSP in the coming years, given that we have a full new facility, which has been dedicated to state-of-the-art laboratories for physiology and movement science testing and research. The new laboratories will offer a perfect setting for home-grown research projects with key stakeholders in Qatar and international collaborators, to foster a network of local experts aiming to improve the sciences of sports and exercise in the region.”

الدوحة: احتل برنامج العلوم الرياضية بجامعة قطر المرتبة بين 151-200 على مستوى العالم في تصنيف شنغهاي الدولي لعام 2020 للكليات وأقسام العلوم الرياضية.

ويضع هذا الترتيب البرنامج في موقع ريادة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، وفقا لهذا التصنيف.

وحقق البرنامج تقدما كبيرا في مجال البحوث في السنوات القليلة الماضية، وتمكن من تحسين ترتيبه بما لا يقل عن 50 مرتبة مقارنة بنسخة التصنيف شنغهاي الدولي لعام 2018.

وأوضحت الجامعة أنه بالرغم من كون البرنامج صغيرا نسبيا، مع حوالي 10 إلى 12 من أعضاء هيئة التدريس الناشطين في مجال البحوث، إلا أنه يتنافس مع وحدات أكبر، مثل: كليات ومعاهد متخصصة بمجال علوم الرياضة بجميع أنحاء العالم.

وعلى مدى السنوات الثلاث الماضية، تضاعفت نتائج الأبحاث تقريبا في برنامج العلوم الرياضية في جامعة قطر، حيث وصلت في عام 2019 إلى حوالي 5 مقالات منشورة لكل عضو من هيئة التدريس في المجلات المحكمة المرموقة ودور النشر الدولية.

وتتميز المنشورات بكونها تصدر في مجلات محكمة بمعظم تخصصات العلوم الرياضة، وقد ساعدت هذه النوعية الممتازة من المنشورات إلى حد كبير في زيادة إبراز البرنامج وترتيبه على المستوى الدولي.

وبادر برنامج العلوم الرياضية، في عام 2017، بإنشاء وحدات بحثية لزيادة المساهمة في المعرفة في مجال الرياضة وممارسة الرياضة المتعلقة بقطر والمنطقة.

وقال الدكتور محفوظ عمارة، مدير برنامج العلوم الرياضية، في تصريح له، إن هذا الإنجاز الجديد لم يكن ممكنا من دون الجهد الدؤوب لكل أعضاء هيئة التدريس، والطاقم الإداري وطلاب وطالبات التخصص في برنامج العلوم الرياضية والدعم المستمر من الجامعة.

من جانبها، توقعت الدكتورة لينا ماجد، رئيسة لجنة تمكين البحث ببرنامج العلوم الرياضية المزيد من التحسن في الإنتاج البحثي للسنوات المقبلة، نظرا للتوسع البحثي وافتتاح مختبرات ومعامل بحثية في علم وظائف الأعضاء والعلوم الخاصة بالحركة بمجمع الرياضات الجديد بجامعة قطر.

وقالت إن المعامل الجديدة بيئة مثالية لمشاريع الأبحاث المحلية مع أصحاب المصلحة الرئيسيين في قطر والمتعاونين الدوليين، لتعزيز شبكة من الخبراء المحليين بهدف تحسين الإنتاج البحثي لعلوم الرياضة واللياقة البدنية بدولة قطر والمنطقة.
