Doha: Reader’s Digest, in its Australian edition, reviews 7 “myths” that most people believe are scientific facts that cannot be doubted.

Writer Marissa Laliberte highlighted in “Reader’s Digest” 7 false information that contradicts science, according to Al Jazeera Net today:

1: The color of blood on your body is blue

One of the widespread fallacies is that the blood that circulates in the arteries and veins is blue, but it turns red when exposed to air.

Since the color of the veins tends to be greenish blue, this theory seems logical, but the truth is that human blood is red, both inside and outside the body. The color tends to be bright red when the blood is rich in oxygen, and darker when the percentage of oxygen is low. The tissues that cover the veins affect the absorption and distribution of light, which is why the blood appears blue.

2: Humans use only 10% of their brains

This is a scientifically false claim, and in fact, functional MRI can clearly show you that more than 10% of your brain lights up when you say some words.

3: The Great Wall of China is seen by the naked eye from the moon

Baseless claim. Astronauts have confirmed that this great edifice can only be seen from space at low altitudes.

4: An ostrich buries its head in the sand

In fact, an ostrich may die asphyxiated if it actually buries its head underground when it feels fear. According to the San Diego Zoo, in the United States, an ostrich puts its head and neck on the ground if a predator approaches them. In this case, the light color of her head blends with the color of the soil, and from afar it appears as if she is burying her head underground.

5: Chameleon changes color for camouflage

Chameleons can really change their color by stretching and loosening their skin cells that contain some kind of crystal matrix, but they can’t actually turn into whatever color they want to match their surroundings, and the change has nothing to do with camouflage.

Chameleons tend to change their color mainly for communication, with dark colors indicating aggression (when a female does not want to mate), as well as temperature control, as light colors reflect the outside heat.

7: The goldfish’s memory lasts only 3 seconds

The fish are smarter than we thought, as one study found that African tilapia fish that live in fresh water can remember where food is in their tank after being placed in another tank for 12 days.

Another study looked at the extent of the goldfish’s ability to distinguish between two different classic songs. After more than 100 sessions, it was found that the fish was biting the thread associated with the correct song by 75%. And if we assume her memory really lasts 3 seconds, that kind of training wouldn’t be possible.

وأبرزت الكاتبة ماريسا لاليبرتي في مجلة “ريدرز دايجست” 7 معلومات مغلوطة تخالف يقوله العلم، وفق موقع الجزيرة نت اليوم، هي:

1: لون الدم في جسمك أزرق

من المغالطات المنتشرة على نطاق واسع، أن لون الدم الذي يجري في الشرايين والأوردة أزرق، ولكنه يتحول للون الأحمر عندما يتعرض للهواء.

نظراً لأن لون الأوردة يميل إلى الأزرق المخضر، فإن هذه النظرية تبدو منطقية، ولكن الحقيقة هي أن لون الدماء البشرية أحمر سواء داخل الجسم أو خارجه. ويميل اللون إلى الأحمر الفاتح عندما يكون الدم غنياً بالأكسجين، ويصبح داكنا ًعندما تقل نسبة الأكسجين.

وتؤثر الأنسجة التي تغطي الأوردة على امتصاص الضوء وتوزيعه، ولهذا السبب يبدو لون الدم أزرق.

2: البشر يستخدمون 10% فقط من أدمغتهم

وهو ادعاء خاطئ علمياً، وفي الواقع، يمكن أن يظهر لك التصوير بالرنين المغناطيسي الوظيفي بوضوح، أن أكثر من 10% من دماغك يضيء عندما تنطق ببعض الكلمات.

3: سور الصين العظيم يرى بالعين المجردة من القمر

ادعاء لا أساس له من الصحة. وقد أكد رواد الفضاء أنه لا يمكن رؤية هذا الصرح العظيم من الفضاء إلا على ارتفاعات منخفضة.

4: النعامة تدفن رأسها في الرمال

الحقيقة أن النعامة قد تموت مختنقة إذا دفنت رأسها بالفعل تحت الأرض عندما تشعر بالخوف. ووفقاً لحديقة حيوانات سان دييغو بالولايات المتحدة، تضع النعامة رأسها ورقبتها على الأرض إذا اقترب منها حيوان مفترس. وفي هذه الحالة، يمتزج  لون رأسها الفاتح مع  لون التربة، وتظهر من بعيد كما لو أنها تدفن رأسها تحت الأرض.

5 : الحرباء تغير لونها للتمويه

تستطيع الحرباء فعلاً أن تغير لونها عبر شد وإرخاء خلايا جلدها التي تحتوي نوعاً من المصفوفات البلورية، لكنها لا تستطيع في الواقع أن تتحول إلى أي لون تريده ليتناسب مع محيطها، كما أن التغيير لا علاقة له بالتمويه.

وتميل الحرباء إلى تغيير لونها بشكل أساسي للتواصل، حيث تشير الألوان الداكنة إلى العدوانية (عندما لا تريد الأنثى التزاوج مثلاً)، فضلاً عن التحكم في درجة الحرارة، إذ تعكس الألوان الفاتحة الحرارة الخارجية.

6: البرق لا يصعق المكان ذاته مرتين

لا يوجد شيء يمنع البرق من أن يضرب المكان ذاته أكثر من مرة في وقت وجيز، فقد تعرض مبنى إمباير ستيت (Empire State Building) لثماني ضربات متلاحقة في غضون 24 دقيقة أثناء عاصفة رعدية.

7: ذاكرة السمكة الذهبية تدوم 3 ثوان فقط

يعتبر السمك أذكى مما كنا نعتقد، حيث وجدت إحدى الدراسات أن أسماك البلطي الأفريقي التي تعيش في المياه العذبة يمكن أن تتذكر مكان الطعام في حوضها بعد وضعها في حوض آخر آخر لمدة 12 يوماً.

كما نظرت دراسة أخرى في مدى قدرة السمكة الذهبية على التمييز بين أغنيتين كلاسيكيتين مختلفتين، فبعد أكثر من 100 جلسة، تبين أن السمكة كانت تعض الخيط المرتبط بالأغنية الصحيحة بنسبة 75%. وإذا افترضنا أن ذاكرتها تدوم 3 ثوان حقاً، فلن يكون هذا النوع من التدريب ممكناً.
