Nasa: Images of Colored Explosions of Electricity on Jupiter

WASHINGTON: Juno spacecraft captured images of colored explosions of lightning-like electricity in the atmosphere of Jupiter on October 28^th.

NASA explained that such jellyfish shaped phenomena, as well as incandescent disks called “elves”, also occur in the upper atmosphere of the Earth during thunderstorms.

It noted that these phenomena were first documented in 1989, and scientists expected that other planets that have lightning, such as Jupiter, would also produce these transitory luminous events.

Juno cannot confirm that these events were caused by lightning strikes, because the lightning detector is located on the other side of the spacecraft from the UV imaging device, and images are taken from the two devices with an interval of at least 10 seconds, which is a long delay. Too short to capture the very short flash of light.

NASA explained that these explosions were very short-lived and transient luminous events, which emitted a lot of hydrogen, and occurred at a height of 186 miles above Jupiter’s water clouds, and were too high to be considered lightning.

وأوضحت /ناسا/ أن مثل هذه الظواهر،تكون على شكل قنديل البحر، وكذلك الأقراص المتوهجة التي تسمى /الإلفس/، تحدث أيضا في أعالي الغلاف الجوي للأرض أثناء العواصف الرعدية.

وأشارت إلى أنه تم توثيق هذه الظواهر لأول مرة في عام 1989، وتوقع العلماء أن الكواكب الأخرى التي لديها برق، مثل المشتري، ستنتج أيضا هذه الأحداث المضيئة العابرة.

ولا تستطيع /جونو/ تأكيد أن هذه الأحداث قد نتجت عن ضربات البرق، لأن أداة الكشف عن الصواعق موجودة على الجانب الآخر من المركبة الفضائية من جهاز التصوير بالأشعة فوق البنفسجية، ويتم التقاط الصور من الجهازين بفاصل زمني لا يقل عن 10 ثوان، وهو تأخير طويل جدا لالتقاط وميض الضوء القصير ذاته.

وأوضحت /ناسا/ أن أن هذه الانفجارات كانت أحداثا مضيئة عابرة وقصيرة العمر للغاية، وأصدرت الكثير من الهيدروجين، وحدثت على ارتفاع 186 ميلا فوق السحب المائية للمشتري، وأعلى من أن تكون برقا.
