Construction works start on D-Ring road upgrading project

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has started implementing the upgrading works of the D-Ring Road. The project aims to improve traffic on the three main intersections of the D-Ring Road to provide free flow of traffic by increasing the number of lanes on Fereej Al Ali intersection (Al Tadamon Intersection), Nuaija Intersection and providing free flow traffic on Lulu intersection. 

The improvements on intersections will enhance the traffic capacity and reduce traffic congestion in the area, especially on Al Tadamon Intersection, which currently witnesses high traffic volume.

The project upgrading works will include the construction of 3.5-km rainwater drainage tunnel to improve the efficiency of drainage networks in the area. The project works will also include the construction of shared pedestrian and cycling lanes along the 4.5 km D-Ring Road on both sides. 

The Qatari heritage of the area surrounding the project, known as Rawdat Al Khail, was considered during the design phase, elements inspired from the Qatari environment will be featured on murals inside the tunnel that will be built as part of the project.

Well-planed diversions will be implemented in the project area, to allow the execution of construction works and to reduce the impacts on traffic flow in the area. The completed sections of the projects will be gradually opened to traffic, and the project is scheduled to be completed by Q1 2022.

Manager of Highway Projects Department at Public Works Authority, Badr Darwish, said that the improvements that has just started on the D Ring Road, is a part of the main overall plan that aims to achieve the highway network connecting the main parts of the country, besides the construction of a new underpass  on Al Tadamon  Interchange with three lanes in both directions, will provide the free flow of traffic on this intersection that is one of the most congested intersections in the area.

Upgrading works on the three intersections:

Fereej Al Ali Intersection (Al Tadamon Intersection): A three lanes in each direction underpass will be constructed on Fereej Al Ali Interchange, to provide free traffic on D-Ring road. The existing signalised junction will be improved, by increasing the number of lanes from three to four lanes in each direction at the intersection with Al-Montazah Street, which will significantly increase the traffic capacity of the intersection and provide free flow traffic.

Nuaija Intersection: The intersection will be improved by increasing the number of lanes on the D-Ring road to four lanes in each direction, thereby increasing the traffic capacity of the intersection.

Lulu Intersection: The intersection will be improved, by allowing free flow of traffic coming from the airport road, towards Fereej Al Ali Interchange along the D-Ring road, while keeping the traffic light in the opposite direction.

بدأت هيئة الأشغال العامة “أشغال” في تنفيذ أعمال تطوير الطريق الدائري الرابع، بهدف تحسين الحركة المرورية على التقاطعات الرئيسية التي يضمها، وتوفير حركة حرة من خلال زيادة عدد المسارات على كل من تقاطع فريج العلي /المعروف بتقاطع التضامن/ وتقاطع نعيجة وتوفير حركة مرورية حرة على التقاطع المعروف بتقاطع اللولو، مما سيعمل تعزيز القدرة الاستيعابية للتقاطعات وتقليل الازدحام المروري في المنطقة بشكل جيد.

كما تتضمن أعمال التحسينات التي سيتم تنفيذها ضمن المشروع، تطوير شبكات تصريف مياه الأمطار لرفع كفاءة صرف مياه الأمطار بالمنطقة، وذلك من خلال إنشاء نفق لتصريف مياه الأمطار بطول إجمالي يصل إلى حوالي 3.5 كم.

وكذلك تنفيذ مسار مشترك للمشاة والدراجات الهوائية على جانبي الطريق الدائري الرابع على طول حوالي أربعة ونصف كيلومتر بالإضافة إلى أعمال التشجير على امتداد المشروع.

وعلى تقاطع فريج العلي /المعروف بتقاطع التضامن/ سوف يتم إنشاء نفق بثلاثة مسارات في كل اتجاه لتوفير حركة مرورية حرة مع تحسين تقاطع الإشارات الضوئية السطحية، عن طريق زيادة عدد المسارات من ثلاثة إلى أربعة في كل اتجاه عند التقاطع مع شارع المنتزه، مما سيعمل على زيادة الطاقة الاستيعابية للتقاطع بشكل كبير ويوفر انسيابية مرورية.

وبالنسبة لتقاطع نعيجة فسوف يتم تحسينه عن طريق زيادة عدد المسارات على الطريق الدائري الرابع إلى أربعة مسارات في كل اتجاه، وبالتالي زيادة القدرة الاستيعابية للتقاطع.

أما التقاطع المعروف بتقاطع اللولو فسوف يتم تحسين تقاطع الإشارات الضوئية، من خلال السماح بمرور حر للحركة القادمة من تقاطع طريق المطار، باتجاه تقاطع فريج العلي على طول الطريق الدائري الرابع مع الإبقاء على الإشارة الضوئية للحركة المرورية في الاتجاه الآخر.

وفي هذا الصدد علق المهندس بدر درويش، مدير إدارة مشروعات الطرق السريعة في أشغال، بأن أعمال التحسينات التي تم البدء بتنفيذها على الطريق الدائري الرابع، تأتي كجزء من الخطة الأشمل التي تهدف لتحقيق شبكة طرق سريعة متطورة تربط جميع المناطق ببعضها.

وأضاف أن أعمال التحسينات وبالأخص إنشاء نفق جديد بثلاثة مسارات في كل اتجاه على تقاطع فريج العلي /المعروف بتقاطع التضامن/من شأنه أن يعزز الانسيابية المرورية جدا على هذا التقاطع المعروف بكثافة الحركة المرورية عليه.

من جانبه أوضح المهندس محمد سامي جمال، من إدارة مشاريع الطرق السريعة في هيئة الأشغال العامة، أن أهمية المشروع وأعمال التحسينات التي ستتم من خلاله، تكمن في الموقع الحيوي للطريق، والأعمال التي ستنفذ من خلال المشروع بالإضافة لزيادة عدد المسارات على التقاطعات الرئيسية للطريق ستؤثر إيجابا على تسهيل حركة المرور على الطريق الدائري الرابع والمناطق الحيوية المتصلة به.

يذكر أن هيئة الأشغال العامة ستقوم بتنفيذ التحويلات المروية بشكل مدروس يتيح تنفيذ أعمال المشروع مع الحرص على تقليل التأثيرات على الحركة المرورية في المنطقة، على أن يتم افتتاح الأجزاء المكتملة من الأعمال، ومن المخطط أن يتم الانتهاء الكلي من أعمال المشروع في الربع الأول من عام 2022.
