European study finds Coronavirus treatment with Raloxifene

Researchers supported by the European Union have revealed the success of laboratory experiments, by computers, in finding the treatment for the new coronavirus with a popular drug. The researchers requested to begin clinical trials to study the drug Raloxifene which is used for osteoporosis, after virtual and laboratory tests conducted in secret indicated that it could be effective against Covid-19. The Italian bio-company Dompe said, through its official website, that the research consortium known as “Exscalate4CoV”, used giant computers to examine more than 400,000 molecules for the potential effectiveness of the drug against the virus.

The researchers conducted laboratory and biological tests on 7,000 samples, which showed promising results, out of 40 molecules that showed activity against the virus, and found that Raloxifene was the most promising outcome, according to a press release issued by the commission. Clinical trials were still needed to clarify whether they would actually succeed in treating infected patients. Researchers said that Raloxifene has the potential to prevent the disease from progressing in mild cases by preventing the virus from multiplying in cells.

A spokesman for Dompé farmaceutici, which is leading the trials, said that the Exscalate4CoV consortium is talking to the European Medicines Agency about clinical trials that could begin this summer. “Once approved, the drug can be made available quickly in low volumes, helping to mitigate the effects of new waves of infection,” he said.

In Moscow, The Director of the Russian Federal Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology Research Galamia, Alexander Gintsburg, announced that production of a Russian vaccine against the new coronavirus could begin next fall. The Information Office of the Russian Ministry of Defense (which cooperates with the Institute in the development of a vaccine against the coronary virus) quoted Ginsburg as saying: “The production of a Russian vaccine against  Coronavirus may begin in the fall of 2020, and thanks to the system of immunotesting of “Covid-19” produced by the Galamia Institute, more than 4,000 blood plasma samples have been analyzed.

The director of the centre, named after prominent Russian epidemiologist Nikolai Gamalia, explained that the new testing system detects the presence of antibodies that neutralize the coronavirus in the blood and allows high-quality blood testing of those recovering from the virus.

وأوضح مدير المركز الذي يحمل اسم عالم الأوبئة الروسي البارز نيقولاي غاماليا، أن نظام الاختبار الجديد يتأكد من وجود أجسام مضادة تحيّد فيروس كورونا في الدم وتتيح فحص دم المتعافين من الفيروس بجودة عالية.
