When will travel return to normal? And what do you know about the “immunity” passport?

The repercussions of the coronavirus outbreak have affected all walks of life in general, but the actions taken by states to restrict air traffic and people’s adherence to stay in their homes for fear of contracting the virus have led to the paralysis of this vital sector faster than others, will the world remain on lockdown?

CNBC spoke to experts in the healthcare and tourism sectors to understand the medical risks and the way consumers think about travel, agreeing that it could take 18 to 24 months before demand rises significantly and travel begins to return to normal levels, according to Russia’s Sputnik.

In the meantime, the travel industry will undergo some major changes, airports may impose new types of security checks to screen sick travelers, nervous tourists will spend a holiday closer to home, and the travel experience will be dominated by chains, making small hotels and restaurants struggle or exit the market, the network added.

Airlines such as Delta are considering issuing unofficial “immunity passports” to those who prove that they have been infected with the virus and have recovered from it, indicating that they have become immune to the disease, but Harvard University’s Professor of Global Health, Ashish Geha, questioned the success of such an idea, with the virus proving to be repeated again for people who have already recovered from it and tests are still inaccurate.

Geha noted the changing quality of antibody tests, warning that “tests are still very flawed,” and even if people recover and have antibodies, it is possible that they may get infected again, and temperature tests at airports can become the main rule after this, but Geha believes they are not enough to detect cases where a person is infected without symptoms.

In general, without analysis and tracking of cases and strict isolation, it is extremely difficult for airlines to reassure passengers that everyone on board is not infected with Coronavirus, He said, “When it comes to resuming activities as before, it’s about taking the risk. There is no magic formula to set it up.”

A survey conducted by a travel market-focused research firm named Longwoods International, showed that 82 percent of Americans have already changed their travel plans for the next six months because of the Coronavirus, 50 percent said they will cancel flights, and 45 percent expect to reduce travel in this time frame, according to a survey of 1,000 adult Americans.

“What we’ve seen since the country closed is that this trend has been rising directly,” said Amir Elon, the company’s president and CEO, who has been conducting regular surveys since the epidemic was announced. But now we see a stability in it.”

Dominance of large companies

The network also said that the epidemic has already devastated the travel industry, and companies are either closing or laying off employees, and early last month, the World Travel and Tourism Council predicted that the travel industry would lose up to $2.1 trillion by the end of the year.

This means fewer options for travellers once demand returns, and many small businesses will close, leaving behind larger groups that can attract people who spend a lot of money.

In April 2019, more than 2 million passengers were travelling daily, but a year later, with the outbreak and the suspension of air travel, air traffic decreased by more than 95%, with fewer than 100,000 passengers per day.

أثرت تداعيات تفشي فيروس كورونا على جميع مناحي الحياة بشكل عام، إلا أن الإجراءات التي اتخذتها الدول لتقييد حركة الطيران وتمسك الناس بالبقاء في بيوتهم خوفاً من الإصابة بالفيروس أدت إلى شلل هذا القطاع الحيوي أسرع من غيره فهل سيبقى العالم مقفلا هكذا؟..

شبكة  “سي إن بي سي” تحدثت إلى خبراء في قطاعات الرعاية الصحية والسياحة لفهم المخاطر الطبية والطريقة التي يفكر بها المستهلكون في السفر، حيث اتفق هؤلاء الخبراء أن الأمر قد يستغرق ما بين 18 إلى 24 شهرًا قبل حدوث ارتفاع كبير في الطلب وتبدأ حركة السفر في العودة إلى المستويات العادية وفقا لوكالة “سبوتنيك ” الروسية.

وأضافت الشبكة أنه في غضون ذلك ستخضع صناعة السفر لبعض التغييرات الكبيرة ، حيث قد تفرض المطارات أنواعًا جديدة من الفحوصات الأمنية لفحص المسافرين المرضى، وسيقضي السياح العصبيون عطلة أقرب إلى المنزل، وستهيمن على تجربة السفر سلاسل مما يجعل الفنادق الصغيرة والمطاعم تكافح أو تخرج من السوق.

بدورها تدرس شركات طيران، مثل “دلتا” إصدار “جوازات مناعة” غير رسمية لأولئك الذين يثبتون أنهم أصيبوا بالفيروس وتعافوا منه، ما يشير إلى أنه أصبح لديهم مناعة ضد المرض، غير أن أستاذ الصحة العالمية في جامعة هارفارد، أشيش جها، شكك في مدى نجاح مثل هذه الفكرة، مع ثبوت تكرار الإصابة بالفيروس مجددا لأشخاص تعافوا منه بالفعل “كما أن الاختبارات لا تزال غير دقيقة”.

وأشار جها إلى الجودة المتغيرة لاختبارات الأجسام المضادة، محذرًا من أن “الاختبارات لا تزال معيبة للغاية”، وحتى إذا تعافى الأشخاص وأصبح لديهم أجسام مضادة، فمن المحتمل أن يصابوا مرة أخرى، كما يمكن أن تصبح فحوصات درجة الحرارة في المطارات هي القاعدة الرئيسية بعد الآن، لكن جها يرى أنها ليست كافية للكشف عن الحالات التي يكون الشخص فيها مصابًا دون أعراض.

وأضاف جها أنه بشكل عام، من دون تحليل وتتبع الحالات والعزل الصارم، يكون من الصعب للغاية على شركات الطيران  أن تطمئن المسافرين أن الجميع على متن الطائرة ليسوا مصابين بفيروس كورونا، متابعا : “عندما يتعلق الأمر باستئناف الأنشطة كما كان من قبل، فإن الأمر يتعلق بتحملك للمخاطر. ليس هناك صيغة سحرية لضبط الأمر”.

كما أن استطلاع للرأي أجرته شركة أبحاث تركز على سوق السفر تسمى “لونغوودس إنترناشيونال” أظهر أن 82 في المئة من الأميركيين غيروا بالفعل خطط سفرهم للأشهر الستة المقبلة بسبب فيروس كورونا، و قال خمسون بالمائة إنهم سيلغون الرحلات ، ويتوقع 45 بالمائة أن يقللوا السفر في هذا الإطار الزمني ، وفقًا لمسح 1،000 أمريكي بالغ.

وقال أمير إيلون ، رئيس الشركة والمدير التنفيذي ، الذي يجري استطلاعات منتظمة منذ أن تم الإعلان عن الوباء: ما رأيناه منذ أن أغلقت البلاد هو أن هذا التوجه كانت يرتفع بشكل مباشر. لكننا نرى الآن ثباتًا فيه”.

هيمنة الشركات الكبيرة

كما قالت الشبكة أن الوباء  دمرصناعة السفر بالفعل، وتقوم الشركات إما بالإغلاق أو تسريح الموظفين، ففي أوائل الشهر الماضي، توقع المجلس العالمي للسفر والسياحة أن تخسر صناعة السفر ما يصل إلى 2.1 تريليون دولار بحلول نهاية العام.

وهذا يعني خيارات أقل للمسافرين بمجرد عودة الطلب، كما يعني أن العديد من الشركات الصغيرة ستغلق أبوابها، تاركة وراءها المجموعات الأكبر حجماً التي يمكنها جذب الأشخاص الذين ينفقون الأموال ببزخ.

الجدير بالذكر أنه في أبريل  نيسان من عام 2019، عبر المطارات الأمريكية أكثر من مليوني مسافر يوميا، لكن بعد عام، ومع اندلاع الوباء وإيقاف السفر الجوي، انخفضت حركة الطيران بنسبة تتجاوز 95%، وسجلت هذه المطارات أقل من 100 ألف مسافر يوميا.
