HMC stresses the importance of early testing for people with COVID-19 symptoms

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has underscored the importance of early testing for people with symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Dr. Ahmed Al Mohammed, Chairman of HMC’s Department of Internal Medicine and Acting Chairman of HMC’s Intensive Care Units (ICU), stressed on the importance of individuals with COVID-19 symptoms getting tested.

He says anyone who develops symptoms should immediately contact the Ministry of Public Health’s dedicated hotline on 16000 or present at a COVID-19 testing center. He says the earlier the virus is detected, the easier it will be to manage and recover from it.

“Early testing is critical to slowing the spread of the virus, and it is also essential to ensuring we treat people while they are still in the early stages of illness and before their condition becomes more advanced and complicated. There is growing evidence that some individuals with symptoms are opting to stay home,” said Dr. Al Mohammed, who is also Acting Medical Director of Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital.

“This can be extremely dangerous. If a patient is developing pneumonia, it can get progressively worse very quickly. This is also true of patients who are older or have underlying medical conditions and may develop associated complications. With COVID-19, things can escalate very quickly, which is why we are stressing the importance of early testing,” added Dr. Al Mohammed.

“We still don’t fully understand why some people who get this virus will become very sick, while others experience almost no symptoms. Certain predictors can help us determine who is most at risk for severe illness, but we are all hearing the stories from across the world about young, healthy people who contract this virus and require mechanical ventilation and other forms of intensive treatment. Not all of these patients survive, particularly if they present late with advanced and severe disease,” Dr. Al Mohammed said.

Dr. Al Mohammed says one of the most challenging aspects of the virus is that it is difficult to know how it will affect any individual person.

He says while older and chronically ill people are more at risk for developing complications from COVID-19, there remains a lot that isn’t known about the virus, underscoring the importance of early detection. He says a stay in the ICU can be a very traumatic experience, mentally and physically.

“If you have a fever, cough, or difficulty in breathing, you may have COVID-19 and should be tested right away. Chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, gastric problems, and loss of taste or smell could also be symptoms of COVID-19. We do not want to be alarmist, but we also do not want people to become complacent about infection prevention measures and social distancing, nor do we want them to delay getting tested and treated if they have symptoms. Like most diseases, getting diagnosed early can mean the difference between a quick recovery or severe illness that could require intensive carelevel treatment,” said Dr. Al Mohammed.

“We need people to understand the seriousness of this situation. If you develop symptoms that could be due to COVID-19, get tested, without delay,” added Dr. Al Mohammed.

أكدت مؤسسة حمد الطبية على أهمية خضوع الأشخاص الذين يعانون من أعراض فيروس كورونا (كوفيد-19) للفحص على الفور.

وقال الدكتور أحمد المحمد رئيس قسم الطب الباطني بمؤسسة حمد الطبية ورئيس قسم العناية المركزة في المؤسسة بالوكالة إن أي شخص يعاني من أعراض فيروس كورونا يجب أن يتصل على الفور بالخط الساخن المخصص لوزارة الصحة العامة على الرقم 16000 أو الذهاب إلى أحد مراكز فحص /كوفيد- 19/.

وشدد الدكتور المحمد على أن الاكتشاف المبكر للفيروس سيسهل عملية علاجه والتعافي منه.

وأشار إلى أن الشخص الذي يعاني من الحمى أو السعال أو صعوبة في التنفس قد يكون مصابا بكوفيد-19 ويجب أن يخضع للفحص على الفور، كما أن القشعريرة والآلام في العضلات والصداع والتهاب الحلق ومشاكل في المعدة وفقدان حاستي التذوق والشم يمكن أن تكون أيضا من أعراض /كوفيد-19/ .

وأوضح الدكتور أحمد المحمد الذي يشغل أيضا منصب المدير الطبي بالوكالة لمستشفى حزم مبيريك العام أن الفحص المبكر يعد أمرا بالغ الأهمية لإبطاء انتشار الفيروس، كما أنه أمر ضروري لضمان أن تقديم العلاج للأشخاص وهم لا يزالون في المراحل الأولى من المرض وقبل أن تتدهور حالتهم وتصبح أكثر تعقيدا.

وأضاف أن هناك أدلة متزايدة على أن بعض الأشخاص الذين يعانون من الأعراض يختارون البقاء في المنزل، معتبرا ذلك أمرا خطيرا للغاية فإذا كان المريض يعاني من الالتهاب الرئوي فقد تسوء حالته بشكل تدريجي وبسرعة كبيرة وينطبق هذا أيضا على المرضى الأكبر سنا أو الذين يعانون من أمراض مزمنة وقد يصابون بمضاعفات مرتبطة بها، مشيرا إلى انه مع الإصابة بفيروس كوفيد-19 يمكن أن تتدهور الأمور بسرعة كبيرة ولذلك فإنه من الأهمية بمكان اجراء الفحص المبكر.

وقال الدكتور المحمد “ما زلنا لا نفهم تماما سبب أن بعض الأشخاص الذين يصابون بالفيروس يمرضون مرضا شديدا بينما لا يعاني آخرون من أي أعراض تقريبا”.

ولفت إلى أن بعض المؤشرات يمكن أن تساعد في تحديد من هم الأكثر عرضة لخطر الإصابة بأمراض شديدة ولكن هناك قصص من كل أنحاء العالم تتحدث عن شباب أصحاء يصابون بهذا الفيروس ويحتاجون إلى جهاز التنفس الاصطناعي وأشكال أخرى من العلاج المركز، ولا يبقى كل هؤلاء المرضى على قيد الحياة خاصة إذا تأخروا في طلب العلاج وهم في مراحل متقدمة وشديدة من المرض.

وأفاد بأن أحد أبرز التحديات المتعلقة بهذا الفيروس يتمثل في صعوبة معرفة كيف يمكن أن تؤثر الإصابة بهذا المرض على شخص ما بعينه فعلى الرغم من أن كبار السن والأشخاص المصابين بأمراض مزمنة يعدون أكثر عرضة للإصابة بمضاعفات حادة إذا أصيبوا بفيروس كوفيد-19، فإن هناك الكثير من الجوانب المرتبطة بهذا الفيروس التي لا تزال غير معروفة وهو ما يزيد من أهمية الفحص والكشف المبكر عن الإصابة بهذا المرض، مشيرا إلى أن الإقامة في وحدة العناية المركزة قد تكون تجربة عصيبة للغاية على المستويين النفسي والجسدي.

وشدد الدكتور المحمد على أن الهدف ليس إثارة الذعر والقلق ولكن يجب أن لا يتهاون الناس في تطبيق تدابير وإجراءات الوقاية من العدوى والتباعد الاجتماعي ولا أن يتأخروا في الخضوع للفحص والعلاج إذا كانت لديهم أعراض المرض.

وأكد أنه مثل معظم الأمراض فإن التشخيص المبكر قد يشكل فارقا بين التعافي السريع أو المرض الشديد الذي قد يتطلب علاجا مكثفا.

كما أكد على الحاجة أن يفهم الناس خطورة هذا الوضع فإذا ظهرت على الشخص أعراض قد تكون مرتبطة بكوفيد-19، فعليه الخضوع للفحص على الفور وبدون تأخير.
