Astronomical source: Islamic countries wrongly broke fasting to see Mercury thinking it was the crescent of the month of Shawal

An astronomical source said that the countries that broke fasting on Saturday may have misseen the planet Mercury, thinking it was the crescent of the month of Shawal of the Hijri year 1441.
The source added, in a tweet that it received inquiries about the announcement of some African countries to see the crescent on Friday evening, despite the moonset before sunset in all the countries of the Islamic world, making it impossible to see the crescent.
In response to these inquiries, the source replied that Venus and Mercury were present on the western horizon very close and striking, and that may be the reason for their breaking of fasting on Saturday.
The source posted a picture showing the moon’s location beneath the horizon at sunset on Friday, and the location of Mercury and Venus converging over the western horizon, as shown from West Africa.
Unlike most countries in the Muslim world, countries such as Mauritania, Somalia, Mali and Niger have announced the vision of Hilal Shawal on Friday evening, declaring Saturday to be the first day of Eid al-Fitr.
Somalia, Mauritania, Mali, Ivory Coast and Niger celebrated Eid al-Fitr on Saturday, while 18 Arab countries announced that the first day of Eid al-Fitr will begin on Sunday, while India and Bangladesh will celebrate the first day of Eid, next Monday.

قال مصدر فلكي إن الدول التي أفطرت السبت ربما أخطأت برؤية كوكب عطارد ظنًا منها أنه هلال شهر شوال للعام الهجري 1441.
وأضافت المصدر، في تغريدة عبر تويتر أنه تلقى استفسارات حول إعلان بعض الدول الأفريقية رؤية الهلال مساء الجمعة، رغم غروب القمر قبل الشمس في جميع دول العالم الإسلامي؛ ما يجعل رؤية الهلال أمرا مستحيلا.
وردًا على تلك الاستفسارات، أجاب المصدر بأن كوكبي الزهرة وعطارد كانا متواجدين فوق الأفق الغربي وبشكل متقارب جدًا وملفت للنظر، وقد يكون هذا هو السبب في إفطار تلك الدول السبت.
ونشر المصدر صورة توضح موقع القمر تحت الأفق لحظة غروب الشمس يوم الجمعة، وموقع عطارد والزهرة المتقاربين فوق الأفق الغربي، وذلك كما يظهر من غرب أفريقيا.
وخلافا لأغلبية دول العالم الإسلامي، أعلنت دول مثل موريتانيا والصومال ومالي والنيجر، ثبوت رؤية هلال شوال مساء الجمعة؛ لتعلن أن السبت هو أول أيام عيد الفطر..
يذكر أن الصومال وموريتانيا ومالي وساحل العاج والنيجر قد احتفلت اليوم السبت بعد الفطر المبارك، في حين أعلنت 18 دولة عربية أن أول أيام عيد الفطر المبارك يبدأ غدًا الأحد، بينما تحتفل الهند وبنغلاديش بأول أيام العيد، الإثنين المقبل.
