Fuwairit Beach sees the first nesting of endangered hawksbill turtle
تسجيل أول حالة تعشيش للسلاحف صقرية المنقار المهددة بالانقراض بشاطئ فويرط
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Environmental Protection, Reserves and Wildlife Department, has announced the first nesting of the endangered hawksbill turtle at Fuwairit Beach.
The nesting and the laying of 81 eggs were recorded on Tuesday, according to an MME statement.
The nesting season for endangered turtles is monitored by Qatar University, the MME, and Qatar Petroleum.
The MME has been carrying out various activities at the beaches of Ras Laffan, Lehwaylah, Al Marounah, Fuwairit, Al Ghariyah and Al Mafeer, besides Haloul, Sharaawah, Umm Tees and Rukn islands for turtle protection.
As per the proceedings, nests that are monitored will be transferred to the protected nests’ area at Fuwairit Beach.
The MME annually closes Fuwairit beach to the public for a certain period to facilitate the nesting of the endangered hawksbill turtles.
Studies show that Fuwairait is the most common nesting area in Qatar for hawksbill turtles.
This may be due to the nature of the place, as digging is easy and the area is also quiet — away from buildings and camping sites.

أعلنت وزارة البلدية والبيئة ممثلة بإدارة الحماية والحياة الفطرية عن تسجيل أول حالة تعشيش للسلاحف صقرية المنقار المهددة بالانقراض بشاطئ فويرط. وقد قام أعضاء فريق العمل بتسجيل البيانات المطلوبة وتنظيف السلحفاة من القواقع ومعالجة الجروح ووضع الأرقام على السلحفاة، ونقل العش الى المكان المخصص وقد بلغ عدد البيض 81 بيضة.
وقد جرى العمل في نطاق مشروع حماية السلاحف الذي يتم تحت إشراف وزارة البلدية والبيئة وبتمويل من قطر للبترول وتنفيذ مركز العلوم البيئية بجامعة قطر بالتعاون مع فريق من الوزارة، ويجري فيه تغطية الشواطئ الشمالية الشرقية بالدولة (شاطئ راس لفان، حويلة، الجساسية، المرونة، فويرط، الغارية، المفير)، ويتم نقل الأعشاش التي يتم رصدها إلى المكان المحمي المخصص للأعشاش بشاطئ فويرط.
