Qatargas installs artificial coral ridge modules off Banana Island
«قطرغاز» تستكمل مشروع استزراع الشعاب المُرجانية الاصطناعية في جزيرة البنانا
In line with its commitment to protecting the biodiversity in the Qatari marine environment, Qatargas Operating Company Limited (Qatargas), in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), has successfully completed the installation of two hundred artificial coral ridge modules off Banana Island.
The artificial coral ridge installation project is a testament to Qatargas’ commitment to protecting Qatar’s rich offshore biodiversity.
It is aligned with the Environmental Development pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030) that calls for protection of Qatar’s unique environment and nurture.
The project involved performing a marine environmental assessment (MEA) of various recipient marine locations in cooperation with the MME. After an appropriate site assessment, the location was selected to accommodate such imitative.
The design of the artificial ridge modules was studied carefully to ensure the natural Qatari marine environment and fabricated locally in Qatar using environmentally friendly materials following the MME’s guidance.
Environmental conservation is one of the core beliefs at Qatargas and the company strives to preserve marine life form as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives. In line with these initiatives, in 2007 nearly 4,500 living hard corals had been relocated from near-shore pipelines area to a suitable coral reef area during the construction of the LNG expansion projects.
Following this, approximately 3,000 hard corals were transferred during 2012-14 to an appropriate recipient location north of Qatar. Such initiatives were undertaken in compliance with local and international regulatory requirements and in full cooperation and coordination with the MME.
Qatargas is a pioneer in the LNG industry in installing such artificial coral ridge modules that quickly evolve into a vibrant and thriving habitat with a rich biodiverse ecosystem.
Creation of such habitats also serves to underline the company’s commitment to protect Qatar’s precious biodiversity and improve its climate resilience.
قامت شركة قطرغاز للتشغيل المحدودة (قطرغاز)، بالتعاون مع وزارة البلدية والبيئة ممثلة بإدارة التقييم البيئي و إدارة الثروة السمكية، باستكمال مشروع استزراع الشعاب المرجانية الاصطناعية، بالبيئة البحرية المحاذية لجزيرة البنانا.
فقد تم بنجاح إنزال وتثبيت 200 وحدة من الشعاب المُرجانية الاصطناعية، بالتنسيق مع إدارة الثروة السمكية وإدارة التقييم البيئي بوزارة البلدية والبيئة، و إدارة أمن السواحل والحدود بوزارة الداخلية.
تأهيل
ويساهم هذا المشروع في تأهيل البيئة البحرية وإثرائها بتوفير المواطن للأسماك والكائنات المائية الأخرى وتعزيز فرص التوعية العامة .
ويعدُّ هذا المشروع أحد المبادرات البيئية التي تعتبر جُزءاً من إلتزامات شركة قطر غاز للمشاريع، للمساهمة في إثراء البيئة البحرية والحد من الآثار البيئية السلبية الناجمة عن المشاريع الصناعية. تأتي مبادرات قطر غاز البيئية تماشيا مع ركيزة التنمية البيئية لتحقيق رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030، والتي تدعو إلى حماية البيئة لدولة قطر وتحقيق الاستدامة للموارد البحرية الحية.
تضمَّن المشروع إعداد دراسة تقييم الاثر البيئي، وتنفيذ برنامج المسوحات البحرية لاختيار أنسب المواقع لإنزال مجسمات الشعاب المرجانية الاصطناعية، وفقاُ لمعايير وزارة البلدية والبيئة، الخاصة بملائمة مواقع الإنزال ومواصفات الشعاب المرجانية الصناعية صديقة البيئة. هذا وقد تم تصميم وتصنيع الشعاب المرجانية الاصطناعية محليا و باستخدام مواد صديقة للبيئة وفق دراسات علمية، لتلائم طبيعة الموقع.
