Qatar welcomed 2.1 million visitors in 2019
قطر استقبلت 2.1 مليون زائر في عام 2019
Qatar witnessed huge leap in visitor arrivals with 2.1 million visitors last year, a double-digit growth compared to 2018. This was pointed out by H E Akbar Al Baker, Secretary-General of Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) and Group Chief Executive of Qatar Airways yesterday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of Shop Qatar 2020, Al Baker said the 25-day festival is the first of many events in Qatar’s packed 2020 calendar designed to attract an increasing number of tourists to the country. He said the festival marks the beginning of an exciting year for the tourism industry in my country.
“In 2019 we saw a double-digit growth in our key markets, welcoming 2.1 million visitors to Qatar – a 17 percent increase over the previous year,” he said, while thanking the various partners from the public, private and semi-government sectors for the remarkable development Qatar’s tourism sector had seen.
In line with Shop Qatar, he said Qatar Airways had created special packages for international guests which also include free shopping transfer in a bid to further boost the country’s destinations.
“I want to thank the Ministry of Interior who will fast-track visa applications within 24 hours for anyone identifying Shop Qatar as the reason for their visit, simply to add more visitors to the already 80 nationalities that can come to Qatar without visa. This is separate of course to the people that have ease of travel to my country. We are now welcoming every single country’s citizen to visit and take part in the celebration of Shop Qatar,” he said.
Thanking the different sectors for their initiative, creativity and continuous collaboration, he said, “Together we will create unique and memorable experience in luxury, retail and entertainment putting Qatar on the list of the must-visit countries.”
