Preparations in full swing for Qatar’s hosting of 24th Arabian Gulf Cup

Qatar is gearing up to host the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup, which will kick off at Khalifa International Stadi-um on November 27.
The tournament, which is organised by the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF), will be con-tested by five teams, with all the matches taking place at Khalifa International Stadium, which recently hosted the IAAF World Athletics Championships.
The draw for the tournament will take place in Doha on October 23, with tickets going on sale a day later. Tickets will be available online and from various outlets across Qatar, including the Mall of Qatar, Doha Festival City, Villagio, Souq Waqif and Hamad International Airport.
Jassim Al Rumaihi, General Secretary of the AGCFF, said: “We are proud to be hosting the Arabian Gulf Cup in Qatar for the fourth time and look forward to hosting thousands of fans from across the region. We welcome everyone to enjoy this festival of football.”
Al Rumaihi continued: “All the matches will take place at the iconic Khalifa International Stadium – the scene of sporting triumphs in Qatar throughout the last 40 years and the first tournament-ready venue for the FIFA World Cup 2022.”
Saud Al Mohannadi, Chairman of the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup Local Organising Committee and Vice Pres-ident, Qatar Football Association, said: “Qatar’s hosting of the Arabian Gulf Cup is another opportunity to test the country’s event hosting expertise as we continue preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup in December and the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
“After successfully hosting the IAAF World Athletics Championships, Khalifa International Stadium is currently being prepared to host the Arabian Gulf Cup and welcome thousands of passionate football fans from Qatar and the wider region.”
Following an extensive redevelopment, the 40,000-capacity Khalifa International Stadium – Qatar’s national football stadium – reopened in May 2017. Located in Aspire Zone, this historic venue has pre-viously hosted the Arabian Gulf Cup, the Asian Games and the AFC Asian Cup. The stadium is equipped with state-of-the-art cooling technology, which allows it to be used all-year-round.
The Arabian Gulf Cup was conceptualised during the 1968 Olympics, with the first edition taking place in 1970. Kuwait became the first country to win the title after defeating Bahrain. Qatar has hosted the tournament on three previous occasions: 1976, 1992 and 2004 and won the tournament on three occa-sions: 1992, 2004 and 2014.
يشهد استاد خليفة الدولي، في السابع والعشرين من نوفمبر المقبل، انطلاق منافسات بطولة كأس الخليج العربي في نسختها 24، بمشاركة خمسة منتخبات، وستُجرى قرعة البطولة في الثالث والعشرين من الشهر الحالي. وفي تصريح له بهذه المناسبة، قال جاسم الرميحي، الأمين العام لاتحاد كأس الخليج العربي لكرة القدم: «نفخر باستضافة البطولة للمرة الرابعة، ونتطلع إلى استقبال آلاف المشجعين من أنحاء المنطقة؛ فنحن نرحب بالجميع للاستمتاع باحتفالية كروية خليجية على أرض قطر».
وأضاف الرميحي: «ستقام جميع مباريات البطولة في استاد خليفة الدولي، الذي شهد العديد من الأحداث الرياضية الكبرى في قطر على مدى أربعين عاماً، ويعدّ أول الاستادات جاهزية لاستضافة منافسات بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022™».
من جانبه، قال سعود المهندي، رئيس اللجنة المحلية المنظمة لبطولة كأس الخليج العربي 24، ونائب رئيس الاتحاد القطري لكرة القدم: «تمثّل استضافة قطر بطولة كأس الخليج العربي -الحدث الكروي الخليجي الأبرز على مستوى المنتخبات الوطنية- فرصة لاختبار إمكاناتنا وخبراتنا في تنظيم الأحداث الرياضية، في إطار تحضيراتنا لتنظيم بطولة كأس العالم للأندية FIFA 2019™ في ديسمبر المقبل، وبطولة كأس العالم FIFA 2022™». وأضاف المهندي: «تجري الاستعدادات حالياً في استاد خليفة الدولي لاستقبال الآلاف من مشجعي كرة القدم من قطر والمنطقة، وذلك بعد نجاح الاستاد مؤخراً في استضافة بطولة العالم لألعاب القوى 2019».
يُذكر أن استاد خليفة الدولي تبلغ طاقته الاستيعابية 40 ألف مشجّع، ويعدّ الاستاد الوطني في دولة قطر، وأُعيد افتتاحه في مايو 2017 بعد خضوعه لعملية تطوير شاملة؛ إذ جرى تزويد الاستاد بتقنية تبريد متطورة تتيح الاستفادة منه طوال العام. وشهد هذا الاستاد التاريخي -الذي يقع ضمن مؤسسة أسباير زون- في السابق منافسات بطولة كأس الخليج العربي، ودورة الألعاب الآسيوية الدوحة 2006، وبطولة كأس آسيا لكرة القدم.
وُلدت فكرة بطولة كأس الخليج العربي خلال دورة الألعاب الأولمبية الصيفية 1968، وانطلقت نسختها الأولى عام 1970، ليصبح الكويت أول منتخب يحرز اللقب بعد تغلّبه على البحرين في المباراة النهائية. واستضافت قطر البطولة في ثلاث نسخ سابقة؛ أعوام 1976 و1992 و2004، وحصدت لقب البطولة ثلاث مرات في 1992 و2004 و2014.
وستتوفر تذاكر البطولة، التي تتواصل منافساتها حتى التاسع من ديسمبر المقبل، اعتباراً من 24 أكتوبر الحالي، عبر الإنترنت وفي العديد من منافذ بيع التذاكر المنتشرة في أنحاء الدولة؛ منها قطر مول، ودوحة فستيفال سيتي، وفيلاجيو مول، وسوق واقف، ومطار حمد الدولي.
