Facebook Suspends ‘Tens of Thousands’ of Apps

Facebook has suspended “tens of thousands” of apps on the social network as part of a company audit into whether third-party developers have been mishandling users’ personal information.

The staggering number was disclosed on Friday more than a year after Facebook launched an audit in response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which involved a researcher using a third-party app to collect data from up to 87 million users, largely without their consent.

The audit kicked off in March 2018. Facebook initially suspended 200 apps; by August 2018, 400 were banned. On Friday, the social network gave an update. “To date, this investigation has addressed millions of apps,” Ime Archibong, Facebook’s VP of product partnerships, said in a blog post. “Of those, tens of thousands have been suspended for a variety of reasons while we continue to investigate.”

The affected apps are associated with about 400 developers, but not all were necessarily harvesting users’ data in shady ways. “Many (of the apps) were not live but were still in their testing phase when we suspended them,” he said. “It is not unusual for developers to have multiple test apps that never get rolled out. And in many cases, the developers did not respond to our request for information so we suspended them, honoring our commitment to take action.”

In a few cases, Facebook banned the apps entirely. “That can happen for any number of reasons, including inappropriately sharing data obtained from us, making data publicly available without protecting people’s identity or something else that was in clear violation of our policies,” Archibong said.

So far, the company has yet to publicly name the suspended apps, or how many users may have been affected. According to Archibong, this is because Facebook is still confirming whether any misuse, in fact, occurred. “We have been in touch with regulators and policymakers on these issues. We’ll continue working with them as our investigation continues,” he added.

A Facebook spokesperson also told PCMag that in a number of instances, a suspension occurred because of the app’s mere association with a person or entity who may have misused Facebook data. The spokesperson indicated disclosing which apps had been suspended without verifying the privacy violations would break a confidentiality agreement.

“If and when we ban an app, we will notify people here: https://www.facebook.com/help/yourinfo,” the spokesperson added.

To prevent future misuse, Facebook has been removing a number of application programming interfaces (APIs) that developers had been using to potentially collect users’ personal information. The company is also offering rewards to people who report third-party data misuse over the platform.

وقالت «فيسبوك»، في بيان لنائب رئيس الشَراكات إيم ارشيبونغ إن التعليق «لا يشكّل بالضرورة مؤشراً إلى أن هذه التطبيقات تشكل تهديداً»، مضيفاً أن «البعض لم يستجب لطلبنا بالحصول على معلومات».

وقال ارشيبوغ إن التحقيق «تناول ملايين التطبيقات، تم تعليق عشرات الآلاف منها لأسباب مختلفة»، موضحاً أن التحقيقات لم تنته بعد.

وتعرّضت «فيسبوك» لانتقادات حادة، بعدما أقرَّت بأن المعطيات الشخصية لعشرات ملايين المستخدمين قد نُقِلت بشكل «غير مناسب» إلى شركة «كامبريدج أناليتيكا».

وبعدها أعلنت «فيسبوك» أنها ستبدأ بمراجعة التطبيقات التي تستخدم هذه المنصة، وذلك لتحديد كيفية استخدامها للبيانات، وما إذا كانت تلتزم قواعد حماية الخصوصية.

وقال ارشيبونغ: «في بعض الحالات حظرنا تطبيقات بشكل تام».

وأوضح أن «هذا الأمر يمكن أن يحدث لأسباب متعددة بما فيها المشاركة غير المناسبة لبيانات تم الحصول عليها منا، وإتاحة بيانات للعامة من دون حماية هويات الأشخاص أو أمور أخرى تشكل انتهاكاً صريحاً لسياساتنا».

وتابع أن «أحد التطبيقات التي تم حظرها يُدعى (ماي برسوناليتي) أي (شخصيتي) يقوم بمشاركة معلومات مع باحثين وشركات ضمن آليات حماية محدودة»، مضيفاً أن مطوري التطبيق رفضوا الخضوع للتدقيق.

وقالت «فيسبوك» إنه تم التوصل مؤخراً مع لجنة التجارة الفيدرالية الأميركية إلى اتفاق حول حماية الخصوصية، يفرض على منصة التواصل الاجتماعي غرامة مالية قدرها 5 مليارات دولار وينص على إجراء مراجعة إضافية لمطوّري التطبيقات.

وقال ارشيبونغ إن الاتفاق «يفرض على المطورين القيام سنوياً بإثبات التزامهم بسياساتنا»، مضيفاً أن «أي مطور لا يجاري هذه المتطلبات سيُحاسَب».
