QRCS and Eid Charity provide solar power to poor families in Gaza Strip

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has carried out a charitable project to provide power for the houses of poor families in the Gaza Strip.

With QR350,000 funding from Eid Charity, the project serves 58 families – or a total of 400 people – by providing electricity to run the medical equipment used by patients 24/7, QRCS has said in a

statement.

The people of Gaza suffer long power cuts, sometimes lasting for 16 consecutive hours per day. To deal with this problem, QRCS installed solar panels to secure an environment-friendly source of alternative energy.

While selecting the beneficiaries, certain criteria were observed, such as the house location, family size and the ratio of children, women and senior citizens to the total number of family members.

With this vital intervention, many patients will be safe against the risk of serious health implications or even death as a result of the recurrent power cuts in the blockade, the statement notes.

Co-ordinated with Palestine’s Ministry of Social Development, the project covered those families registered with the ministry’s national

programme.

The staff who implemented the project noticed the positive difference in the lives of the beneficiaries. The solar panels provide stable power, cost nothing to operate and meet the basic needs of the patients.

One of the beneficiaries was Hayat al-Bahisi (62), who sat on her bed in a one-room house at Deir Al-Balah Camp, southern Gaza, while her son was administering her artificial ventilator, which she has had to use because of her poor health condition.

“For the past few years, I have suffered severe respiratory diseases, which required me to use an artificial ventilator on a permanent basis,” said al-Bahisi. “The machine needs power to work, and power in Gaza is not something that you can easily find every day.”

Another family had two kids with cerebral palsy. The medical equipment used by the beneficiaries ranged from air mattresses for bedsores to vital signs

monitors.

Since early in 2008, QRCS has been working in Gaza to provide diverse healthcare, water, sanitation and other forms of aid, in order to improve the living conditions of the local community, the statement adds.

A total of 80 projects have been conducted with an overall cost of over $110mn.

نفذ الهلال الأحمر القطري مشروعاً اجتماعياً لتوفير الإنارة الآمنة في منازل الأسر الفقيرة بقطاع غزة، وذلك بتمويل من مؤسسة عيد الخيرية قدره 350 ألف ريال، وتستفيد من هذا المشروع 58 أسرة يبلغ إجمالي عدد أفرادها 400 فرد، من خلال توفير الكهرباء اللازمة لتشغيل الأجهزة الطبية التي يستخدمها المرضى في منازلهم على مدار الساعة.

يساهم هذا المشروع في التخفيف من أزمة انقطاع التيار الكهربائي لساعات متواصلة، تتجاوز في أغلب الأحيان 16 ساعة يومياً، من خلال توفير مصدر للطاقة والإنارة البديلة والصديقة للبيئة. وقد تم اختيار المستفيدين بناء على عدة معايير أهمها: موقع المنزل، وعدد أفراد الأسرة، ونسبة الأطفال والنساء وكبار السن والمرضى من إجمالي أفراد الأسرة.

ويعتبر هذا التدخل من أهم التدخلات التي يقوم بها الهلال الأحمر القطري لصالح الأسر الفقيرة في قطاع غزة، والتي تضم مرضى يحتاجون إلى أجهزة طبية تحول دون تدهور حالتهم الصحية بصورة خطيرة قد تصل في بعض الحالات إلى الوفاة، في ظل الانقطاع المتكرر والمستمر للكهرباء في قطاع غزة. وقد لاحظ فريق عمل المشروع من الهلال الأحمر القطري وعيد الخيرية الأثر العميق والإيجابي الذي أحدثه هذا المشروع على حياة الأسر المستفيدة، حيث تمثل ألواح الطاقة الشمسية مصدر كهرباء آمن ومستمر، ولا تترتب عليه أي مصاريف تشغيلية، ويلبي الاحتياجات الأساسية لهذه الفئة من المجتمع. وتم تحديد معايير اختيار المستفيدين من المشروع بالتنسيق بين بعثة الهلال الأحمر القطري التمثيلية ووزارة التنمية الاجتماعية الفلسطينية، على أن تكون الأسرة من مستفيدي البرنامج الوطني لوزارة التنمية الاجتماعية الفلسطينية، وأن يكون أحد أفراد الأسرة مصاباً بحالة مرضية تستدعي استخدام أجهزة طبية تعمل بالطاقة الكهربائية، وأن يكون المنزل مملوكاً لأصحابه، ومؤهلاً لتركيب أنظمة الطاقة الشمسية، وأن يكون لدى الأسرة المستفيدة الدافع والاهتمام بتركيب النظام والمحافظة عليه. ومن قصص النجاح التي تعكس الأهمية البالغة لهذا المشروع، الأثر الإيجابي للمريضة حياة البحيصي (62 عاماً)، التي تجلس على سريرها في وسط بيتها بمخيم دير البلح للاجئين جنوب قطاع غزة، بينما يضع لها ابنها جهاز التنفس الاصطناعي نظراً لسوء حالتها الصحية في الأعوام الأخيرة. تقول البحيصي: «منذ عدة سنوات وأنا أعاني من أمراض شديدة أثرت على مجرى التنفس مما جعلني أعتمد بشكل كلي على أجهزة التنفس الاصطناعي، والتي تحتاج إلى تشغيل الكهرباء على مدار الساعة. وقد ساعدني المشروع بتوفير الطاقة في ظل انقطاع التيار الكهربائي عن غزة بسبب الأوضاع الصعبة».

كما استفادت من المشروع أسرة تعيل طفلين يعانيان من الشلل الدماغي، وأسر أخرى لتشغيل الفرشات الهوائية التي تمنع التقرحات، وأجهزة الشفط لاستخراج المخلفات من مجرى التنفس، وشاشات مراقبة الوظائف الحيوية.
