Fathia Zaalani the first woman to compete with men in driving an ambulance in Qatar
فتحية زعلاني أول سيدة تنافس الرجال في قيادة سيارة الإسعاف في دولة قطر
Ms. Fathia Zaalani, a paramedic with Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Ambulance Service, says rushing to the scene of a traffic accident, fire, or call from the home of someone who has had a heart attack comes naturally to her. She says being one of the first people on the scene, helping those in need of medical assistance, isn’t just what she does, it is who she is. The nineteen-year veteran paramedic is a fixture at the headquarters of HMC’s Ambulance Service and says she is proud to hold the titles of Qatar’s first female paramedic and ambulance driver.
“Almost twenty years ago, in 2000, I came to Doha after completing my studies in Tunisia. I joined HMC’s Ambulance Service, becoming the first female paramedic. I later became an assistant critical care paramedic and then my manager suggested I drive the ambulance so I underwent the intensive training necessary to acquire this license. Today I’m not only Qatar’s first female paramedic but I’m also the first female ambulance driver in the country,” said Ms. Zaalani.
Mr. Brendon Morris, Executive Director for the HMC Ambulance Service, said Ms. Zaalani is a wonderful example of diversity in the Ambulance Service.
“Worldwide, the paramedic field remains a male-dominated profession. Yet, it is clear from the example of Ms. Zaalani that regardless of gender, paramedics make an enormous contribution to the communities they serve. We are always working to encourage more women to join our service and to help deliver the life-saving care that we provide,” explained Mr. Morris.
Ms. Zaalani says driving an ambulance is normally a profession reserved for men and while she initially found it challenging to be a woman in the profession, she says racing to the scene to help those most in need is her calling. She is good at her job and being among the first to help those in need is a responsibility she is proud to accept.
“I remember the first time I drove the ambulance. People on the streets were surprised to see me. I could see it in their eyes. There were a lot of surprised looks and I could see the amazement on the faces of the motorists I shared the roads with. But then I noticed people began saluting me. They were waving and cheering me on,” said Ms. Zaalani.
Driving an ambulance is a constant race against time. In addition to excellent driving skills, it requires patience, time management, and problem-solving skills. Ms. Zaalani says the experience has made her a better driver and a more capable paramedic.
“I think women are natural problem solvers. We are multitaskers and can make critical decisions under pressure. I think being a paramedic is a career that many women would excel in. I’m proud of my profession and I encourage any woman or any young girl who is thinking about this career to pursue it,” added Ms. Zaalani.
Ms. Zaalani says as a paramedic she is required to assess the condition of her patients and to make potentially life-saving decisions. She uses high-tech equipment and makes complex, split-second assessments. As an ambulance driver, she is trained to navigate what is essentially a mobile clinic and she says ongoing education is essential for first responders like her. She attends every workshop and training event she can.
In addition to her responsibilities with the Ambulance Service, Ms. Zaalani also works with the National Command Center (NCC), the organization responsible for managing a coordinated response to both local and national emergencies. She is the first woman to join the NCC as a senior supervisor in the Ambulance Service Medical Communication Center, training new supervisors and representing her organization locally and internationally.
Ms. Zaalani says one of the best aspects of her job is being part of a team. She says her colleagues are always there for each other, noting that their shared experiences have created a unique bond and a degree of mutual respect that cannot be duplicated.
مشهد أصبح مألوفاً لدى الكثيرين في دولة قطر، منذ ما يقرب من عشرين عاماً أن تطلق فتحية زعلاني أول سائقة سيارة إسعاف بدولة قطر صفارة الإسعاف لتعلن وجودها ملبيةً نداء واجبها الإنساني بخطى واثقة ومسرعة برفقة زملائها لإنقاذ حياة المرضى من جراء الحوادث المرورية وغيرها من الحوادث ، لتتخطى كافة الحواجز والصعاب لتصل إلى هدفها بنجاح.
وعلى مدار سنوات عملها الطوال حققت نجاحاً وتميزاً ملحوظاً لتثبت أن المرأة تستطيع منافسة الرجال حتى في أصعب المجالات ما دامت توافرت العزيمة والإصرار.
تقول فتحية زعلاني- أول سائقة إسعاف والسائقة الوحيدة حتى الآن بخدمة الإسعاف بمؤسسة حمد الطبية: “أنهيت دراستي الجامعية في المجال الطبي بتونس وفي عام 2000 قدمت إلى الدوحة والتحقت بالعمل بخدمة الإسعاف بمؤسسة حمد الطبية كأول مسعفة تختص بالتعامل مع الحالات النسائية ؛ لأسطر بذلك أول دخول للعنصر النسائي في مجال الإسعاف، وبعد فترة وجيزة بدأت أتعامل مع كافة الحالات من الرجال والنساء كمساعد مسعف متقدم للحالات الحرجة ومن فرط حبي لمهنتي الإنسانية اقترح المدير على قيادة سيارة الإسعاف ، وحصلت على دورة تدريبية مكثفة تؤهلني لقيادة سيارة الإسعاف المتقدمة لمدة شهرين، ثم خضعت لاختبار شامل اجتزته بنجاح وحصلت على رخصة دخولي المهنة لأكون بذلك أول امرأة تقود سيارات إسعاف في دولة قطر”.
واستطردت فتحية قائلةً: ” أتذكر أول مرة أقود فيها سيارة الإسعاف؛ حيث كانت أول سيارة إسعاف متقدمة يتم تدشينها في خدمة الإسعاف بمؤسسة حمد الطبية، وبدا الأمر مستغرباً لدى الشارع القطري ورأيت ذلك في نظرات الجمهور من سائقي السيارات الذين بدأوا يلقون لي التحية بصافرات سياراتهم واحداً تلو الآخر، ولكن مع مرور الوقت أصبح الأمر معتاداً لديهم”.
من جانبه قال السيد/ براندون موريس، المدير التنفيذي لخدمة الإسعاف بمؤسسة حمد الطبية، أن فتحية تمثل نموذجاً رائعاً للتنوع في خدمة الإسعاف، وأضاف: “يعتبر مجال الإسعاف الطبي في مختلف أنحاء العالم من المجالات التي تزيد فيها مشاركة الرجل عن المرأة، إلا أن النموذج الذي تقدمه فتحية يؤكد على أنه وبغض النظر عن كون المسعف رجلاً أو امرأة، فإن المسعفين يقومون بدور في غاية الأهمية في المجتمعات التي يعملون بها. نعمل دائماً على تشجيع المزيد من النساء على الالتحاق بخدمة الإسعاف للمساهمة في هذه الخدمة الجليلة التي نقدمها للمجتمع والمتمثلة في المساعدة على إنقاذ حياة المرضى والمصابين”.
قيادة سيارة الإسعاف تتطلب التحلي بالحنكة والصبر والمهارة وحسن التصرف وإدارة الوقت للوصول إلى المريض في وقت قياسي، وإجراء اللازم لإنقاذ حياته؛ وهذه الصفات تتحلى بهم جميعاً فتحية، التي تؤكد أن المهنة أضافت لها العديد من المهارات مثل: قوة الشخصية، سرعة اتخاذ القرار المناسب، تحديد الأهداف والشجاعة، وأضافت قائلةً: ” هذه المهنة إنسانية من الدرجة الأولى، وتستطيع المرأة خوض هذا المجال والتميز فيه، لذا أشجع غيري من السيدات والفتيات بعدم التردد في الالتحاق بمهنة الإسعاف لاكتساب مزيد من الخبرات، خاصةً في ظل وجود العديد من الحالات النسائية التي تتطلب وجود سيدات للتعامل معها”.
تسعى فتحية دائماً لتطوير نفسها من خلال خوض العديد من الدورات التدريبية في مجال الإسعاف؛ حيث أهَّلها سعيها الدؤوب واجتهادها في العمل لتمثيل خدمة الإسعاف في العديد من الفعاليات التدريبية وورش العمل المختلفة لتدريب وتطوير الكثير من الشباب من الجنسين، لينتهي بها المطاف حالياً بالعمل كمشرف أول بقسم اتصالات الإسعاف بمركز القيادة الوطني إلى جانب عملها كسائقة سيارة إسعاف لتصبح أيضاً أول امرأة تلتحق بالمركز وكأن نصيبها وقدرها أن تكون الأولى في مختلف المجالات، تقود فريق عملها بتفانٍ، وتدرب المشرفين الجدد وتمثل خدمة الإسعاف أمام المحافل الدولية.
وأشادت فتحية بمسؤوليها بخدمة الإسعاف ومؤسسة حمد الطبية لما يقدمونه لها من دعم مستمر منذ التحاقها بالمهنة وتذليل العقبات والصعوبات التي تواجهها، مما أفسح المجال لها ولغيرها من العديد من الفتيات والسيدات بالتواجد في بيئة عمل صحية أتاحت لهن الفرصة للتميز وبذل قصارى جهودهن للارتقاء بالمهنة وتقديم أفضل رعاية صحية للمرضى.
