Tough battles on the cards as top riders target CHI Al Shaqab glory
French star Julien Epaillard is expected to face a stiff challenge at this week’s CHI Al Shaqab where former LGCT Grand Prix winner Bassem Mohammed of Qatar will be aiming for glory against a top field.
Last Saturday Epaillard guided Usual Suspect d’Auge to a flawless routine at Al Shaqab Arena where the Frenchman launched the new LGCT season with a thumping Grand Prix win.
The 41-year-old will be fully tested at the March 7-to-9 event by the likes of Bassem – winner of the LGCT Doha Grand Prix in November 2017 – and confirmed entries that include riding giant Great Britain’s Ben Maher, Edwina Tops-Alexander of Australia and home hero Sheikh Ali bin Khalid Al Thani.
Usual Suspect d’Auge, aged 11, last Saturday clocked a time of 40.11 seconds as Epaillard won €123,750 for his fluid gallop at the opening round of the 20-stop series.
Epaillard will be one of 91 riders from 23 countries at the three-day event where 139 horses will be seen jumping at the state-of-the-art arena in what will be the 6th edition of the hugely-followed championship.
Other top entries include Great Britain’s Emily Moffitt, Swiss star Pius Schwizer and Germany’s Daniel Deusser.
Epaillard, quick to assess situation and go for a gamble in the LGCT Grand Prix jump-off battle, was thrilled with his performance last Saturday. The Frenchman warned his horse could spring a surprise in Doha once again.
“My horse doesn’t look fast but he is. I was number one to go so I tried my best and the horse was amazing. My plan was to ride a different horse, but in the end it worked out perfectly,” Epaillard said after his win.
“I feel very happy – I have had three second placings this weekend, and when Ben started I thought one more time I would be second,” the 41-year-old added.
Dressage and para dressage competitions will also be held during the March 7-9 championships, organisers said.
CHI Al Shaqab is the only equestrian competition of its kind in the Middle East and Asia region.
Hamad bin Abdulrahman Al Attiyah, President of the Qatar Equestrian Federation (QEF) and the Asian Equestrian Federation (QEF), said: “I would like to extend my appreciation to Al Shaqab for hosting outstanding riders in this great facility and for working in cooperation with QEF. The results are already bearing fruit – besides encouraging them to aspire towards higher goals, there has been a marked increase in the quality of our riders.”
Al Attiyah said Qatar is steaming ahead with its plans to increase the rider base in the country.
“The goal of QEF is to train young boys and girls to the highest possible level of horse riding,” Al Attiyah said.
“We are also looking to support them financially and provide training camps. In addition to showjumping, we aim to train our young riders in the discipline of dressage – a discipline that follows a certain rhythm – as it is quite popular at the Asian Federation level,” he added.
Omar Al Mannai, the CHI Al Shaqab Event Director and Al Shaqab Commercial Manager, said: “Al Shaqab is extremely proud to be organising CHI Al Shaqab for the sixth time. This prestigious and world-class equestrian event has continued to grow in terms of popularity and success since the first edition was held in 2013.”

The event also showcases Al Shaqab as a premier international equestrian competition venue, capable of attracting the world’s top-ranking riders in three Olympic equestrian disciplines.”
Commenting on Para Dressage as a part of CHI Al Shaqab, and the ability of Al Shaqab as a venue to accommodate the discipline, Al Mannai said: “Para Dressage is a discipline that allows fair competition and creates the opportunity for riders of all skills to achieve their goals in equestrian sport. There is a demand from this segment of our population to incorporate Para Dressage in our event. This is the third year Al Shaqab will be including this important Olympic discipline in the event and our facilities are geared to meet the needs of the participants.”
Al Mannai said: “Some of the world’s best riders are in this category. This includes a high-level performer from Saudi Arabia who has competed in the past. These are great role models who are very inspiring. We look forward to seeing Qatari riders participating in this discipline in the future.”

تنطلق اليوم في «الشقب» (عضو مؤسسة قطر)، النسخة السادسة من بطولة الشقب الدولية للفروسية 2019، التي ينظمها الشقب (عضو مؤسسة قطر) لـ 3 أيام، برعاية «إكسون موبيل»، وبمشاركة نخبة من أفضل فرسان العالم وكذلك الخيل، وبمشاركة 91 فارساً و139 جواداً من 23 دولة، في منافسات الفروسية الأولمبية لقفز الحواجز، والترويض، والترويض لذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة.
تحظى البطولة باهتمام بالغ على المستوى الدولي، خاصة أنها وضعت قطر على خريطة الفروسية في العالم. كما عزز التنظيم الناجح لهذا الحدث من قبل «الشقب» مكانة قطر بوصفها وجهة عالمية للرياضة، كما ستُظهر هذه البطولة الشقب مركزاً دولياً متميّزاً في الفروسية، قادراً على جذب كبار الفرسان العالميين في 3 منافسات أولمبية للفروسية. وتُعدّ البطولة الأولى من نوعها في الشرق الأوسط المعتمدة دولياً من قبل الاتحاد الدولي، كما أنها واحدة من 5 بطولات شبيهة حول العالم.
برنامج اليوم
تُقام بداية من الحادية عشرة إلا الربع صباح اليوم، منافسات الترويض لذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، وتستمر حتى الساعة الثانية والربع مساء. فيما ينطلق معسكر «الشقب» الدولي للفرسان في الواحدة ظهراً وحتى الثانية والربع.
ومن المقرر أن تنطلق مباراة الـ 5 نجوم لقفز الحواجز في الرابعة عصراً، فيما تبدأ المباراة الثانية للـ 5 نجوم في السادسة والربع.
مشاركة كبيرة
يتنافس أبرز الفرسان القطريين والعالميين على الألقاب في البطولة، ومن بينهم: الشيخ علي بن خالد آل ثاني وباسم حسن (قطر)، وجوليان إبيارد (فرنسا)، وإميلي موفيت (المملكة المتحدة)، وبيوس شويزر (سويسرا)، ودانيال ديوسر (ألمانيا)، وإدوينا توبس ألكسندر (أستراليا)، وبن ماهر (المملكة المتحدة).
وستكون منافسات البطولة فرصة للفرسان القطريين الشباب غير المشاركين في البطولة لاكتساب مزيد من الخبرات.
ذوي الاحتياجات
وتشهد منافسات ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة اهتماماً كبيراً من قبل القائمين على البطولة، خاصة أنها المرة الثالثة التي ينظم فيها «الشقب» المنافسات لهذه الشريحة من الفرسان.
«هذاب»
وستكون جولات قطر المحلية للفروسية (بطولة هذاب) جزءاً من البطولة، حيث تُقام على هامش «الشقب الدولية» الجولة التاسعة. وكانت الجولة الثامنة خلال الجولة الافتتاحية لبطولة لونجين العالمية التي استضافها «الشقب» نهاية الأسبوع الماضي.
وبدأت بطولة هذاب تستقطب الفرسان من الدول الأخرى، منها مشاركة من سلطنة عمان في الجولة الماضية، وهذه الجولة ستشهد مشاركة من دولة الكويت، وهناك 3 فرسان من شرق آسيا. ويتنافس فرسان «هذاب» اليوم في منافستين للترويض.
فعاليات ومسابقات
خصصت اللجنة المنظمة فعاليات كثيرة للجماهير على هامش البطولة؛ وذلك لضمان جو من المرح والترفيه المستمر. وستكون أبواب «الشقب» مفتوحة للجمهور حتى ختام البطولة.
وتتضمن المنطقة الترفيهية المقامة في الباحة الخارجية لـ «الشقب» مجموعة من الأنشطة والمسابقات والفعاليات المنوعة التي يمكن للأطفال الاستمتاع بها، بما في ذلك ركوب الخيل، وعروض السيرك، وألعاب الخفة، وألعاب الفيديو التفاعلية، وألعاب الواقع الافتراضي، و»الفورمولا واحد»، وأجهزة محاكاة الخيل. وهناك العديد من المطاعم والمقاهي.
