Project to produce 200 tonnes of organic compost to start soon
مشروع لإنتاج 200 طن من السماد العضوي ينطلق قريباً
Doha: A project with an installed capacity to produce of over 200 tonnes of organic compost monthly from organic wastes is set to begin operations within the second quarter (Q2) of this year, said a top official of the project, which is the first-of-its-kind in Qatar.
Using the innovative Australian technology, the company, Agrico, will convert organic waste from commercial establishments such as hypermarkets, hotels, restaurants and others.
“The compost will be used in agriculture as soil conditioner which will reduce water consumption between 60 and 65 percent. It will also reduce the use of chemical fertilizer by about 70 percent,” the Chairman of Agrico, Nasser Ahmed Al Khalaf told The Peninsula.
Khalaf added: “The organic compost will also help reduce the cost of production and making the Qatari agriculture produce more competitive and better in quality.”
A formal memorandum of understanding (MoU), aiming to enhance cooperation, was signed yesterday by Al Khalaf, and Daniel Mitroussidis, Managing Partner of ITSA, an Australian firm providing innovative solutions.
Mitroussidis signed the MoU on behalf of Peter Wadewitz, Managing Director of BiobiN Technologies, which is an affiliate of Peats Soil and Garden Supplies.
The ceremony, held on the sidelines of a meeting with the visiting members of the Australian trade delegation, was witnessed by Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Towar Al Kuwari, First Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of QC and Australian Ambassador to Qatar Axel Wabenhorst.
The first phase of Agrico’s project, with an initial investment of about QR20m, will be located in Al Khor city, but expected to be expanded eventually depending on the availability of raw material and market demand.
“We are looking forward to meet the domestic demand as well as export the surplus output to some neighbouring countries such as Oman, Kuwait, Iran and others,” said Al Khalaf adding that the company is already negotiating with the stakeholder such as hypermarkets, catering companies, malls and other entities dealing with food and vegetables and other organic materials.
“Disposing waste costs money, but we will be collecting free of charge. This is a very new system to convert organic waste into compost. Not many countries in the world have this technology. It is going to be the first in Qatar,” said Al Khalaf.

جاء ذلك خلال أعمال اجتماع المائدة المستديرة الذي عقد مع وفد تجاري من جنوب استراليا متخصص في قطاع الزراعة والأغذية، (اليوم الأحد 24 فبراير 2019) بفندق موفمبيك الدوحة، وذلك لبحث افق التعاون بين القطاع الخاص في قطر واستراليا، والتعريف بالفرص الاستثمارية المتاحة.
بدوره أكد سعادة الدكتور أكسل وابنهورست، سفير أستراليا في الدوحة، أن هناك اهتمام كبير من قبل الحكومة الاسترالية بتعزيز التعاون التجاري مع قطر، حيث تنظر أستراليا لدولة قطر على أنها شريكاً تجارياً هاماً، وأن التعاون الوثيق بين قطر واستراليا في مجال الأمن الغذائي والزراعة قد يكون منطلق لتطوير العلاقات في كافة المجالات الاقتصادية الاخرى، مشيراً الى أن هناك استثمارات كبرى مشتركة بين الشركات القطرية والاسترالية العاملة في مجال الأغذية والزراعة، وقال أن استرالياً تعتبر منتجاً اساسياً لعدد كبير من الخضروات والفاكهة والأغذية عالية الجودة.
واعتبر وابنهورست أن عقد اللقاءات المشتركة بين قطاعات الأعمال في البلدين؛ سيسهم في زيادة الشراكات والتحالفات، واستعراض الفرص المتاحة في الجانبين، موجهاً الدعوة لأصحاب الأعمال القطريين لزيارة جنوب استراليا واستكشاف فرص الأعمال هناك عن كثب.
وتم على هامش اللقاء توقيع اتفاقية تعاون بين شركة اجريكو للتطوير الزراعي ومثلها السيد ناصر احمد الخلف المدير التنفيذي، وبين شركة ITSA الاسترالية للحلول الزراعية والبيئية ويمثلها السيد دانييل متروسيديس، الشريك الاداري، بحضور سعادة السيد محمد بن احمد بن طوار النائب الأول لرئيس مجلس إدارة غرفة قطر، وسعادة الدكتور أكسل وابنهورست، سفير أستراليا في الدوحة.
وتم خلال اللقاء تقديم عرض بعنوان استثمر في مناطق جنوب استراليا، قدمه جهاز التنمية الاقليمية في استراليا، وهو عبارة عن مبادرة حكومية، للتعريف بالمناخ الاستثماري وأهم القطاعات في ولاية جنوب استراليا، والتي تتضمن ثلاثة مناطق وهي ادلايد هيلز وفلوريون وكانغارو آيلاند، وتنتج جنوب استراليا محاصيل زراعية وحمضيات على مساحة تقدر بحوالي 10 آلاف كيلو متر مربع.
