Qatar unveils spectacular design for Lusail Stadium

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has today revealed the design for Lusail Stadium, the venue at which the opening and final games of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ will take place.

The 80,000-capacity venue will be the largest stadium during the tournament, which will kick off on 21 November 2022 and be the first to take place in the Arab world.

Located 15km north of central Doha, Lusail Stadium will form the centerpiece of the new ultra-modern Lusail City, the construction of which is 90% completed.

As well as being situated in the heart of the city of the future, the area holds significant cultural and historical significance for the country, as it was once the home of the founder of modern Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Al Thani.

Renowned British firm Foster + Partners provided the design concept for the stadium. The venue’s golden vessel takes its inspiration from an Arab architectural sense as much as it does from literal symbolism by celebrating the region’s ancient tradition of craftsmanship. The design features ‘fanar’ lanterns and intricately detailed bowls that have been created for centuries in the region.

Construction of the stadium, which is being delivered by a joint venture comprising Qatari firm HBK Contracting Company and China Railway Construction Corporation, is already well underway. With the substructure complete, concrete superstructure and infrastructure works are progressing in all zones, while internal works have commenced in the west stand. Construction of the stadium is set to be completed in 2020.

This is the eighth stadium design to be unveiled by the SC, which is responsible for delivering the infrastructure and host country planning required for 2022 and ensuring it leaves a lasting legacy for Qatar, the region and the world. Khalifa International Stadium became the first tournament-ready venue in 2017, while two more stadiums will be completed early next year – Al Wakrah Stadium and Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City.

Commenting on the design launch, SC Secretary General, H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, said: “With the reveal of the iconic Lusail Stadium design, today marks another significant milestone on the road to 2022. It has now been eight years since we won the rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and we told the world to expect amazing. With this stunning design of our showpiece stadium, I am proud today to once again be delivering on that promise.”

Al Thawadi continued: “The new stadium is a nod to our past and a symbol of an exciting future. On the very same land as the home of our nation’s founder, it sits at the heart of a brand new city. It’s a city for the future, and once the World Cup is over it will form a crucial part of the legacy of the tournament as it transforms to become the heart of a brand new community. We hope that one day, future generations look at Lusail Stadium as a source of inspiration, perseverance and innovation that enabled the transformation of Lusail into the modern city it is.”

Al Thawadi added: “I look forward to many more iconic milestones over the coming four years as we continue our journey towards the first World Cup in the Arab world.”

Hilal Al Kuwari, Chairman of the SC’s Technical Delivery Office, said: “Unveiling the design of Lusail Stadium is another step on our journey to hosting an unforgettable World Cup in 2022. We are currently in the peak construction phase and making incredible progress in collaboration with our partners and stakeholders. We look forward to celebrating more milestones in 2019 and beyond.”

Yasir Al Jamal, Vice Chairman of the SC’s Technical Delivery Office, said: “As with each of our other seven proposed venues, Lusail Stadium will be a world-class arena, fit to host the most important and widely-watched game in world sport. I am delighted to report that work is already underway at the site, and significant progress has been made – with all building works on course to be completed by 2020. We look forward to welcoming the world here in 2022.”

FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, who attended the launch, added: “I am delighted to see Qatar’s continued commitment to excellence in the spectacular Lusail Stadium. Qatar’s stadiums are among the most eye-catching ever seen and the venue proposed for the final is absolutely gorgeous. I particularly enjoy the fact that Middle Eastern culture is reflected in Lusail’s and several other designs, and look forward to seeing football fans from all over the world discover the culture and history of the region.”

After the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, Lusail Stadium will be transformed into a community space, including schools, shops, cafés, sports facilities and health clinics. This multi-purpose community hub will allow people to find everything they need under one roof – the original roof of the football stadium.

To make way for these new amenities, many of the stadium’s modular seats will be removed and donated to sporting projects, taking this arena’s extraordinary legacy – and a little bit of FIFA World Cup™ history – to locations around the world.

كشفت اللجنة العليا للمشاريع والإرث مساء السبت النقاب عن تصميم استاد لوسيل الذي سيستضيف المباراتين الافتتاحية والنهائية من بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم قطر 2022.

ويأتي الإعلان عن تصميم استاد لوسيل ليكون آخر الاستادات الثمانية التي تعلن اللجنة العليا عن تفاصيل تصميمها في طريقها نحو استضافة بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم قطر 2022.

يمزج تصميم استاد لوسيل بين فنون العمارة الإسلامية القديمة والحديثة، حيث تُزخرف الواجهة الخارجية بأشكال عربية هندسية مصممة بطريقة مبتكرة تسمح بدخول أشعة الشمس لداخل الاستاد. وقد ابتكرت شركة فوستر وشركاه البريطانية رؤية تصميم هذا الاستاد، بينما يشرف على بنائه تحالف يتألف من شركة حمد بن خالد للمقاولات القطرية، وشركة سكك الحديد الصينية المحدودة. ومن المقرر إنهاء أعمال بناء هذا الاستاد عام 2020.

يتوسط استاد لوسيل مدينة لوسيل العصرية التي تبعد عن مركز مدينة الدوحة 15 كلم شمالاً. ومن المتوقع أن تصبح لوسيل بعد استكمال بنائها بالكامل مدينة المستقبل نظراً لتمتعها بكل مرافق ومقومات الحياة العصرية، إلى جانب قيمتها التاريخية الهامة في قلوب القطريين، إذ أنها المدينة التي استلهم فيها الشيخ جاسم بن محمد آل ثاني رؤيته لتأسيس دولة قطر الحديثة.

وسيرحب استاد لوسيل بأكثر من 80 ألف مشجع لكرة القدم بحلول عام 2022، ليكون بذلك أكبر استادات مونديال قطر من حيث الطاقة الاستيعابية.

وفي تعليقه على هذا الإنجاز الهام، قال سعادة الأمين العام للجنة العليا للمشاريع والإرث، حسن الذوادي: “اليوم وقد أعلنا عن تصميم استاد لوسيل، فإننا نضع علامة فارقة أخرى في طريقنا نحو استضافة بطولة كأس العالم لأول مرة في الوطن العربي. لقد مرت ثمانية أعوام منذ فوز ملف قطر بحق استضافة البطولة هنا، وقد وعدنا العالم منذ ذلك الحين بتنظيم بطولة مذهلة بكل المقاييس. وحريّ بنا اليوم أن نقول بكل فخر بأننا لن ندخر جهداً للوفاء بوعودنا وتقديم مونديال استثنائي لا مثيل له. ويأتي الإعلان عن تصميم استاد لوسيل تجسيداً لهذه الوعود”.

وأضاف الذوادي قائلاً: “يجسد استاد لوسيل ماضي قطر العريق ومستقبلها المشرق، إذ أن احتضان مدينة لوسيل الغالية على قلوب القطريين لهذا الاستاد المتطور يعكس تمسكنا بجذورنا وتراثنا وشغفنا بمواكبة العصر في آن واحد. يجسد استاد لوسيل الإرث الذي تسعى بطولة قطر 2022 إلى تركه للأجيال بعد انتهاء البطولة، حيث سيصبح – شأنه شأن كافة استادات البطولة- مركزاً مجتمعياً نابضاً بالحياة. ونحن نتطلع لأن تنظر الأجيال قادمة في قطر والمنطقة لهذه البطولة بوصفها فرصة أُحسن استغلالها، وأسهمت بشكل فعلي في تحقيق النهضة وتعزيز التنمية في الوطن العربي والمنطقة ككل”.

من جانبه، قال رئيس المكتب الفني في اللجنة العليا، المهندس هلال الكواري: “يعتبر الإعلان عن تصميم استاد لوسيل محطة هامة في الطريق نحو استضافة بطولة كروية لا تنسى. وتشهد أعمال البناء في الوقت الراهن ذروتها. وبدورنا، لن نتوانى عن التعاون مع كافة الشركاء لتنفيذ أعمال البناء وفق الجدول الزمني المخطط لها. ونتطلع إلى تحقيق مزيد من الإنجازات خلال عام 2019 وما بعده”.

كما قال نائب رئيس المكتب الفني في اللجنة العليا، المهندس ياسر الجمال: “ستستضيف استاد لوسيل – كما هو الحال في الاستادات السبعة الأخرى – منافاسات أهم الألعاب وأكثرها شعبية حول العالم بحلول عام 2022. ويسعدني اليوم القول بأن أعمال البناء في هذا الاستاد تشهد تقدماً ملحوظاً إلى حين انتهاء كافة الأعمال كما هو مخطط لها بحلول عام 2020. وبدورنا، نتطلع جميعاً إلى الترحيب بالعالم عام 2022”.

وعبرت الأمين العام للاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم (فيفا)، السيدة فاطمة سامورا عن سعادتها بهذا الإنجاز، قائلة: “أنا سعيدة بأن أشهد مساعي قطر والتزامها بالتميز، وذلك من خلال الإعلان عن تصميم استاد لوسيل وكافة جهودها الرامية لاستضافة بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم. ولا يخفى أن كافة تصاميم الاستادات في قطر مميزة، لا سيما استاد لوسيل الذي سيستضيف النهائي في 2022. ولعل أكثر ما يعجبني في الاستادات في قطر هو دمج الثقافة العربية في تصاميمها، وأتوقع أن زوار دولة قطر في 2022 سيخوضوا تجربة غنية تعكس ثقافة وتاريخ المنطقة”.

يذكر بأن استاد لوسيل سيشهد استضافة المباراتين الافتتاحية والنهائية من بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم قطر 2022. ويجسد هذا الاستاد الكائن في قلب مدينة لوسيل الجديدة الإرث الذي تتطلع اللجنة العليا إلى تركه لأجيال قادمة للاستفادة منه، إذ سيتم تحويل الاستاد إلى عدة مرافق خدمية تلبي احتياجات سكان مدينة لوسيل مثل مدارس، ومساحات تجارية، وعيادات طبية، ومرافق رياضية، وغيرها. علاوة على ذلك، سيتم بعد البطولة التبرع بالعديد من مقاعد الاستاد القابلة للفك، للاستفادة منها في تطوير مشاريع رياضية حول العالم.

وفي الوقت الراهن، تسير أعمال بناء استاد لوسيل على قدم وساق وفق المخطط لها، حيث تستمر أعمال صب الخرسانة في هيكل الاستاد مع مواصلة أعمال بناء البنية التحتية. علاوة على ذلك، بدأت أعمال البناء الداخلية في الجناح الغربي من الاستاد. ومن المقرر استكمال أعمال بناء الاستاد عام 2020.

الجدير بالذكر بأن اللجنة العليا دشنت عام 2017 استاد خليفة الدولي – أول استادات البطولة جاهزية لاستقبال هذا الحدث الكروي العالمي لأول مرة في المنطقة. ومن المقرر حسب الخطة الزمنية أن يشهد عام 2019 جاهزية استادين آخرين هما الوكرة، والبيت في مدينة الخور.
