Al Ahli Hospital, WCM-Q ink pact for clinical training

Al Ahli Heart Centre and Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q) signed an agreement yesterday for the elective teaching and training of medical students in Qatar – a collaboration that will bring higher quality of healthcare services to the community.

Students will have the opportunity “to have bedside clinical teaching”, as well as attend all investigations carried out at the centre, including procedures in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory and open heart surgery.

The programme, which will initially bring in at least one or two students per month, will be supervised by Al Ahli Heart Centre chairman Dr Abdurrazzak Gehani.

“Such partnership will contribute to the education of medical students and raise the standards of quality of healthcare service in the country,” Al Ahli Hospital CEO Khaled al-Emadi told reporters at the signing ceremony yesterday.

He was joined by Dr Gehani, Al Ahli Hospital’s deputy CEO and director of projects Dr Jamal Saleh Hammad, chief of medical staff Dr Abdul Azim Abdul Wahab Hussain, WCM-Q vice dean for clinical and faculty affairs and professor of clinical paediatrics and clinical anaesthesiology Dr Robert Crone, and senior associate dean for education Dr Thurayya Arayssi. “We as a private institution believe that such contributions are at the very core of our (corporate) social responsibilities towards the State of Qatar,” al-Emadi added.

Meanwhile, Dr Crone said that medical students will have enough time to be exposed to all aspects of cardiology care during the month-long rotation. “But the programme is an elective, so that means that not all students need to take this particular rotation, they can choose to take it if they wish to pursue cardiology,” he pointed out. “We are really proud that with the association beginning with the Ahli Heart Centre we can have our students come to this fine institution and participate in cardiology as a speciality under the supervision and tutelage of Dr Gehani whom we have a long standing association for many years,” Dr Crone said.

Established in 2001, some 335 students have graduated at WCN-Q and many of whom are in their postgraduate training and programmes at Hamad Medical Corporation and in North America, according to Dr Crone. He noted that 20 WCM-Q graduates who have completed their post graduate trainings are back in Qatar, practising medicine in many different disciplines.

“WCM-Q is now here for 17 years and has hopefully become an important part of the healthcare community in Qatar,” Dr Crone added. “In fact, one of our graduates is a staff here at Al Ahli, Dr Aisha Yousef, who is bringing a new speciality to this community.”

The WCM-Q vice dean said they are looking forward to potentially expanding their collaboration with Al Ahli Hospital over the years to come.

Al Ahli Hospital’s deputy CEO and director of projects Dr Jamal Saleh Hammad echoed al-Emadi’s statement saying the new agreement shows the fundamental trust between the two institutions in the quality of expertise at Al Ahli Hospital and its Heart Centre towards the training future doctors.

Citing a keen interest from all parties to aim for the highest standards of clinical care of patients, Dr Gehani stressed that Al Ahli Heart Centre tries very hard to be a centre of excellence at the clinical level, interventional level, catheterisation and advanced technologies, as well as in open heart surgery.

“We already won a National Priority Research Programme with Qatar Foundation’s Qatar National Research Fund so we are on the road to advanced research, and today we complement all of these with medical education,” he added.

وقّع مركز الأهلي للقلب في المستشفى الأهلي، اتفاقية تعاون مع «وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر» لتدريب طلاب الطب. وقّع الاتفاقية كل من السيد خالد العمادي الرئيس التنفيذي للمستشفى الأهلي، والدكتور عبدالرزاق الجهاني رئيس مركز القلب، والدكتور روبرت كرون نائب عميد «وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر» للشؤون الإكلينيكية وشؤون هيئة التدريس، والدكتورة ثريا عريسي العميد المشارك الأول للتعليم الطبي، وذلك بحضور مسؤولين من المستشفى الأهلي ووايل كورنيل للطب – قطر.

تتضمن بنود الاتفاقية وضع منهج تدريبي سريري متكامل، يتم بناء عليه تدريب الطلاب في غرف القسطرة وغرف عمليات القلب المفتوح، تحت قوانين صارمة تحافظ على سلامة المرضى والخصوصية التامة، ثم يتم بعدها التقييم من قبل الدكتور الجهاني، الذي سوف يقوم بدوره بالإشراف على تدريب الطلاب مع الفريق الطبي في مركز القلب.

وأعرب السيد خالد العمادي عن سعادته بتوقيع هذه الاتفاقية، التي تعزز شراكة المستشفى الأهلي مع وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر، وتتيح فرص تدريب وتعليم مناسبة لطلاب الطب، وترسّخ ثقافة الممارسة المهنية، وترفع جودة الممارسة المهنية السريرية، لافتاً إلى حرص المستشفى على تقديم مستوى متميّز في مجالات التدريب والتعليم الطبي.

وذكر العمادي أن المستشفى الأهلي منذ بدء مسيرته قد رسم أهدافه وخططه، التي من ضمنها أن يكون مستشفى تعليمياً يقدم الفائدة لطلاب الطب، ويساهم في العطاء الذي يزيد من ازدهار التعليم والتدريب في القطاع الصحي في دولة قطر.وشدّد على استعداد المستشفى الدائم للمساهمة في كل ما يدعم و يطور التعليم في دولة قطر، وقال: «نحن كمؤسسة صحية في القطاع الخاص، نعتبر مثل هذه المساهمات من ضمن مسؤوليتنا الاجتماعية تجاه دولة قطر».

وقال الدكتور روبرت كرون نائب عميد وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر للشؤون الإكلينيكية وشؤون هيئة التدريس: «توفّر الاتفاقية التي عقدناها مع المستشفى الأهلي آفاقاً جديدة لتدريب طلابنا، الذين سيتمكنون من الاستفادة من خبرات أطباء المستشفى الأهلي وسوف يختبرون التدخلات الطبية والجراحية البسيطة والمعقدة التي تجرى للمرضى في القطاع الخاص في قطر».

وأضاف: «أن الاتفاقيات بين وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر والمؤسسات الشريكة مهمة كثيراً لتعليم طلابنا، كما يساهم دعم تلك المؤسسات في تخريج أطباء يقدمون خدمات رعاية صحية على مستوى عالمي للمرضى في قطر والمنطقة».

وقالت الدكتورة ثريا عريسي العميد المشارك الأول للتعليم الطبي في وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر: «نحن سعداء جداً بتوقيع هذه الاتفاقية بين وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر ومركز القلب في المستشفى الأهلي، ونتشارك برؤيتنا والتزامنا بأن نكون متميّزين في تقديم أرقى الخدمات الصحية لرعاية المرضى». وأعربت عن ثقتها بأن «هذا التعاون سوف يعود بالفائدة الكبرى على المرضى وممارسي المهن الصحية وطلابنا بالتأكيد».

من جهة أخرى، قال السيد جمال حماد نائب الرئيس التنفيذي للمستشفى الأهلي: «إن توقيع الاتفاقية بين المستشفى الأهلي ووايل كورنيل للطب – قطر، يدلّ على ثقة الطرفين في إمكانيات وخبرات الأطباء الذين يعملون في قسم القلب، حتي يكونوا مسؤولين عن تدريب أطباء المستقبل، وهو ما يصب بالدرجة الأولى في مصلحة المريض».

وقال عبدالرزاق الجهاني رئيس مركز القلب بالمستشفى الأهلي: أتمنى أن يساهم هذا الأمر في الارتقاء بالمجال الصحي، ليس في المستشفى الأهلي ومركز القلب فحسب، بل في دولة قطر ككل، التي أصبحت في مقدمة دول العالم في العديد من المجالات، وعلى رأسها المجال الصحي المتميز والتعليم الطبي والبحث العلمي».;
