New study: 97% of websites and apps psychologically manipulate users

A scientific study shows that up to 97% of the most popular websites and apps in Europe attempt to influence users’ decisions using psychological manipulation and deceptive design elements.
According to the German news agency quoted the study ordered by the European Commission, the so-called “dark patterns” are widespread on websites and applications that sell anything.
The study said that the most prevalent “dark pattern” is the concealment of information to push users in the direction of a specific and predetermined choice, making order cancellation difficult and forcing the consumer to register on the site.
The study indicated that the most common form of dark patterns is what happens when users are asked whether they want their online activities to be tracked when entering a site.
The “Accept all cookies” option button is made bright, encouraging the user to agree, while the button to ensure greater user data protection is gray and not easily visible.
“These practices lie in a blurry zone between legal attempts to persuade and illegal attempts to mislead and manipulate users,” the study’s authors said. At the same time, the ability of the average user to detect these methods and deal with them with care is limited.

اظهرت دراسة علمية أن ما يصل إلى 97% من مواقع الإنترنت والتطبيقات الأكثر شهرة في أوروبا تحاول التأثير على قرارات المستخدمين باستخدام وسائل تلاعب نفسي وعناصر التصميم المخادعة.
ووفق ما نقلته وكالة الأنباء الألمانية عن الدراسة التي أمرت بها المفوضية الأوروبية فإن ما يسمى بـ “الأنماط المظلمة” تنتشر بشدة على مواقع الإنترنت والتطبيقات التي تبيع أي شيء.
وقالت الدراسة إن أكثر “الأنماط المظلمة” انتشارا هو إخفاء المعلومات لدفع المستخدمين في اتجاه خيار محدد وخيارات تم تحديدها بشكل مسبق، وجعل إلغاء الطلبية صعبا وإجبار المستهلك على التسجيل على الموقع.
وأشارت الدراسة إلى أن النموذج الأكثر شيوعا للأنماط المظلمة هو ما يحدث عندما يتم سؤال المستخدمين عما إذا كانوا يريدون تتبع أنشطتهم عبر الإنترنت عند الدخول إلى موقع ما.
كما أنه يتم جعل زر خيار “موافق على كل ملفات تعريف الارتباط” براقاً مما يشجع المستخدم على الموافقة، في حين يكون الزر المتعلق بضمان قدر أكبر من حماية بيانات المستخدم رمادياً وفي مكان لا يمكن رؤيته بسهولة.
وقال معدو الدراسة “هذه الممارسات تقع في منطقة ضبابية بين المحاولات القانونية للإقناع والمحاولات غير القانونية للتضليل والتلاعب بالمستخدمين”. وفي الوقت نفسه فإن قدرة المستخدم العادي على اكتشاف هذه الأساليب والتعامل معها بحرص محدودة.
