North Korea Launches Projectile, Says South Korea

Seoul: South Korean military announced that North Korea today launched an “unidentified eastward projectile” what appears to be a new weapons test.

South Korean News Agency (Yonhap) quoted the army in Seoul as saying that the projectile was the third of its kind within more that a week, while local sources reported that “the projectile traveled a short distance, and it is very likely that it was a ballistic missile.”

For its part, the Japanese Coast Guard said that it monitored the “launch from North Korea of what appears to be a missile or ballistic missiles at 14:55” local time.

A Coast Guard spokesman confirmed that the coast guard is still conducting analysis to find out where it fell and whether it was one or more projectiles, and alerts were issued for ships sailing in the waters of the East Sea, the East Chinese Sea and the North Pacific Ocean.

This comes after the United States called on North Korea yesterday (Thursday) to refrain from “more provocations” and return to dialogue, in response to its warning of a stronger reaction if US sanctions are imposed on it.

Despite the international sanctions imposed on it over its nuclear weapons programme, on January 5 and January 11, Pyongyang conducted two tests this year of what it said were hypersonic missiles.

After the second test supervised by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the United States imposed sanctions on five people linked to Pyongyang’s ballistic weapons programme, but a spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry accused the United States of “deliberately escalating” the situation after the American decision was issued.

من جهتها، أفادت قوة خفر السواحل اليابانية، أنها رصدت عملية “الإطلاق من كوريا الشمالية لما يبدو أنه صاروخ أو صواريخ بالستية عند الساعة 14.55” بالتوقيت المحلي.

وأكد متحدث باسم خفر السواحل أن القوة لا تزال بصدد إجراء التحليلات لمعرفة أين سقط وما إذا كان مقذوفا واحدا أو أكثر، كما صدرت تنبيهات (تحذيرات) لسفن تبحر في مياه البحر الشرقي والبحر الشرقي الصيني وشمال المحيط الهادئ.

يأتي ذلك بعد أن دعت الولايات المتحدة، كوريا الشمالية أمس /الخميس/، إلى الامتناع عن “المزيد من الاستفزازات” والعودة إلى الحوار، وذلك ردا على تحذيرها من اتخاذ رد فعل أقوى حال فرض عقوبات أمريكية عليها.

ورغم العقوبات الدولية المفروضة عليها على خلفية برنامجها للأسلحة النووية، أجرت بيونغ يانغ في الخامس وفي 11 من يناير الجاري، تجربتين هذا العام لما قالت إنها صواريخ تفوق سرعتها سرعة الصوت.

وبعد التجربة الثانية التي أشرف عليها الزعيم الكوري الشمالي كيم جونغ أون، فرضت الولايات المتحدة عقوبات على خمسة أشخاص مرتبطين ببرنامج بيونغ يانغ للأسلحة البالستية، لكن متحدثا باسم وزارة الخارجية في كوريا الشمالية اتهم الولايات المتحدة بأنها “تتعمد تصعيد” الوضع عقب صدور القرار الأمريكي.
