COP26 President: Glasgow Summit is Last Hope to Save Earth

Glasgow: The United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) kicked off Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland, a day before world leaders meet to set their vision to confront global warming, as the opening day will focus on the procedural issues of the negotiations on the steps required to implement the outcomes of the Paris Agreement.
The conference will witness delegations from 200 countries seeking to reach agreement on decisions and measures to protect the planet from climate change and rising temperatures, resolve issues that have been left outstanding since the 2015 Paris climate agreement, and find ways to intensify their efforts to prevent global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius this century.
In his opening speech, COP26 President Alok Sharma said, “We know that the window to keep 1.5 degrees within reach is closing,” which is the goal agreed upon at the 2015 Paris Climate Summit to limit the exacerbation of the negative effects of climate change.
Alok Sharma pointed out, “We know that this COP, COP26, is our last best hope to keep 1.5 in reach. And I know that we have an unprecedented negotiations agenda ahead of us. But I believe this international system can deliver.”
He added, “We know that our shared planet is changing for the worse. And we can only address that together, through this international system. And we know what we need to do.”
“Because six years ago, in Paris we agreed our shared goals. We said we would protect people and nature from the effects of climate change. We said we would get finance flowing to climate action.”
“In that spirit I believe that we can resolve the outstanding issues. We can move the negotiations forward. And we can launch a decade of every increasing ambition and action. And, together, we can seize the enormous opportunities for green growth, for good green jobs, for cheaper, cleaner power.”
“And if we act now, and we act together, we can protect our precious planet. So let’s come together over these two weeks. And ensure that where Paris promised, Glasgow delivers.”
COP26 opened Sunday in Glasgow, but the official activities will begin Monday, with the summit, which will be attended by 120 heads of state, in addition to officials of international organizations.
COP26 work will continue over a period of two weeks, as delegates from about two hundred countries will meet to discuss ways to stop climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide support to poor and developing countries in order to transition to a green economy, renewable energy, and the gradual abandonment of fossil fuels.

غلاسكو: انطلقت، الأمس، أعمال مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة بشأن تغير المناخ /كوب 26/ في مدينة /غلاسكو/ الأسكتلندية، قبل يوم من اجتماع قادة العالم لوضع رؤيتهم لمواجهة ظاهرة الاحتباس الحراري، على أن يركز اليوم الافتتاحي على القضايا الإجرائية للمفاوضات بشأن الخطوات المطلوبة لتنفيذ مخرجات اتفاقية باريس.
وسيشهد المؤتمر سعي وفود من 200 دولة للتوصل إلى اتفاق بشأن القرارات والإجراءات الكفيلة بحماية كوكب الأرض من التغيرات المناخية وارتفاع درجات الحرارة، وحل القضايا التي تُركت معلقة منذ اتفاق باريس للمناخ عام 2015، وإيجاد طرق لتكثيف جهودهم لمنع درجات الحرارة العالمية من الارتفاع لأكثر من 1.5 درجة مئوية هذا القرن.
وقال السيد ألوك شارما، رئيس المؤتمر، في الكلمة الافتتاحية، إن الوقت ينفد في السباق نحو وقف ارتفاع درجة حرارة كوكب الأرض عند 1.5 درجة مئوية، وهو الهدف الذي اتفقت عليه الأطراف المشاركة في قمة باريس للمناخ عام 2015 من أجل الحد من تفاقم التأثيرات السلبية للتغيرات المناخية.
وأشار شارما إلى أن القمة الحالية “هي قمة الأمل الأخير لإنقاذ الأرض” وتحقيق الهدف الذي تم وضعه في قمة باريس منذ ست سنوات، مضيفا أن “الجميع يعلم أن كوكبنا الذي نتشارك العيش فيه يتغير للأسوأ، ولا يمكننا معالجة ذلك إلا بالعمل معا.”.. لافتا إلى أن التغير المناخي المتسارع يدق جرس الإنذار للعالم، وأن هدف القمة والمؤتمر هو تحقيق هدف قمة باريس بوقف ارتفاع درجة حرارة كوكب الأرض لأكثر من درجة ونصف.
كما عبر عن اعتقاده بأن القمة “تستطيع السير قدما بالمفاوضات نحو تدشين عقد من الطموحات والعمل المتزايد، ولكن علينا أن نتحرك الآن”، مضيفا أنه في حال تحرك العالم الآن في إطار من التعاون “يمكننا الوفاء بأهداف قمة باريس وتحقيقها في قمة غلاسكو.”
يذكر أن مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة للمناخ في /غلاسكو/ افتتح اليوم لكن الفعاليات الرسمية ستبدأ غدا /الإثنين/ مع عقد القمة التي يحضرها 120 زعيم دولة إضافة إلى مسؤولين في منظمات دولية.
وتستمر أعمال مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة للمناخ /كوب 26/ على مدى أسبوعين، حيث تجتمع وفود من نحو مئتي دولة لمناقشة سبل وقف التغير المناخي، وخفض الانبعاثات الحرارية، وتقديم الدعم للدول الفقيرة والنامية من أجل التحول إلى الاقتصاد الأخضر والطاقة المتجددة والتخلي تدريجيا عن الوقود الاحفوري.
