Slow Clean Energy Transition Results in Worsening Global Warming, IEA Warns

Paris: International Energy Agency (IEA) warned of worsening global warming as a result of the slow transition to clean energies.

The agency also warned in an annual report issued Wednesday, two weeks before the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) in Glasgow, Scotland, of the “turmoil” that the current energy markets will face in the event of delaying the recruitment of rapid investments in this field, in addition to the exacerbation of global warming.

In its report, the agency issued stark warnings about the direction in which today’s policy settings are taking the world.

It also alerted that a new economy is emerging, referring to batteries, hydrogen, and electric cars, but the progress is hindered by the current status quo of fossil fuels, noting that oil, gas, and coal still account for 80 percent of energy consumption and generate three-quarters of the climate imbalance.

The agency, which is part of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), added that if countries met their climate commitments,greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by only 20 percent by 2030 to keep warming under control.

In this context, IEA Director Fatih Birol explained that investments in carbon-neutral energy projects must triple within ten years to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

باريس: حذرت وكالة الطاقة الدولية العالم من تفاقم الاحتباس الحراري نتيجة “بطء شديد” في مجال الانتقال لاستخدام الطاقات النظيفة .

كما حذرت الوكالة في تقرير سنوي صدر اليوم، وقبل أسبوعين من افتتاح الدورة 26 لمؤتمر المناخ (كوب 26) في العاصمة الإسكتلندية غلاسكو ، من “اضطرابات” في أسواق الطاقة الحالية في حال المماطلة في توظيف استثمارات سريعة بهذا المجال، إضافة إلى تفاقم ظواهر الاحتباس الحراري.

وأطلقت الوكالة في تقريرها “تحذيرات جدية بشأن الاتجاه الذي تفرض السياسات الحالية على العالم اتباعه”.. منبهة من “اقتصاد جديد يظهر”، مشيرة إلى “البطاريات والهيدروجين والسيارات الكهربائية”، لكنها رأت أن كل هذا التقدم يقابله “مقاومة من الوضع القائم حاليا والوقود الأحفوري”، مشيرة إلى أن النفط والغاز والفحم ما زالت تشكل 80 بالمائة من استهلاك الطاقة وتولد ثلاثة أرباع الخلل المناخي.

وأضافت الوكالة المنبثقة عن منظمة التعاون والتنمية في الميدان الاقتصادي، أنه إذا تم الوفاء بالتزامات الدول بشأن المناخ سيسمح حتى الآن بخفض انبعاثات الغازات المسببة للاحتباس الحراري بنسبة عشرين بالمئة فقط بحلول 2030 لإبقاء السيطرة على الاحترار.

وفي هذا السياق ، أوضح السيد فاتح بيرول مدير الوكالة أن “الاستثمارات في مشاريع الطاقة الخالية من الكربون يجب أن ترتفع بمقدار ثلاثة أضعاف خلال عشر سنوات من أجل تحقيق الحياد الكربوني بحلول 2050” .
