After the rise in tea prices, will we say goodbye to coffee cup soon?

A recent study revealed that coffee prices will soon rise due to the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and a possible coffee leaf rust epidemic.

According to the study led by Rutgers University, any major impacts on the global coffee industry would have serious implications for millions of people around the world, including the US retail coffee market.

The study links epidemics of coffee leaf rust, a severe fungal disease of plants, to reduced crop care and investment in coffee plantations, and suggests that closures, border policies and unemployment that are hurting the economy today could create conditions for future coffee leaf rust epidemics.

Coffee makers also suffer – according to the study – from the effects of insects, plant diseases and weather, and the study says that the social and economic disruptions of Covid – 19 are likely to push the coffee industry into an “severe production crisis”.

According to the Financial Times newspaper, the prices of coffee beans in the global markets have risen due to the first shortage in the coffee market in four years.

At the beginning of June, the New York Futures Index for Milk Arabica, the most popular and quality coffee bean, hit a four-and-a-half-year high of about $1.70 per pound, up nearly 70% from the previous year.

Since then, Prices have fallen to about $1.50 per pound, which is still a notable increase from 2020.

The newspaper expects that the rise in coffee prices will be added to the rise in wages and other costs, which will increase the burdens of consumers.

The expected rises in coffee prices come after the large increases in tea due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in India.

The “Financial Times” newspaper says that the sharp rise in the cases of Coronavirus in India, in addition to the drought, may lead to hampering tea harvests.

The newspaper quoted the local tea plantation owners association that 90 tea plantations in the state of Assam, the largest tea producer in the country, have recorded a total of about 500 cases of coronavirus.

The owners of tea plantations see the need for more tests to determine the true extent of the epidemic, while the authorities are trying to stop the spread of the Coronavirus infection in 800 other farms in the state.

في بداية شهر يونيو، سجل مؤشر العقود الآجلة في نيويورك لبن أرابيكا، أكثر حبوب البن شهرة وجودة، أعلى مستوى له في أربعة أعوام ونصف العام عند حوالي 1.70 دولار للرطل، بزيادة تقارب 70 % عن العام السابق.

وانخفضت الأسعار منذ ذلك الحين إلى حوالي 1.50 دولار للرطل، وهي لا تزال زيادة ملحوظة عن عام 2020.

ونقلت الصحيفة عن جمعية اأصحاب مزارع الشاي المحلية أن 90 مزرعة شاي في ولاية آسام، أكبر منتج للشاي في البلاد، سجّلت بها ما مجموعه حوالي 500 حالة إصابة بفيروس كورونا.

ويرى أصحاب مزارع الشاي وجود حاجة إلى مزيد من الاختبارات لتحديد المدى الحقيقي للوباء، فيما تحاول السلطات وقف انتشار عدوى فيروس كورونا في 800 مزرعة أخرى بالولاية.
