Severe Heatwave Ravage Western US

Washington: A heatwave that ravaged the west of the United Sates has brought record temperatures to several areas, as a temperature of 54.4C was registered in California state’s Death Valley region.

The extreme temperatures that scorched the Pacific Northwest triggered wildfires and pressured electricity, including a wildfire in the west of Oregon state that threatened the safety of homes and cut the electrical power.

Wildfires were burning across more than 768,000 acres of land in 12 western US states, and over 500,000 acres in Canada on Sunday amid another searing heat wave.

According to the American National Interagency Fire Center, firefighters were battling 55 large fires across the US on Sunday, while in Canada, firefighters were responding to more than 300 active wildfires, including 60 new ones.

The American National Weather Service (NWS) issued warnings of excessive heat in the western area, warning all of the dangerously hot temperatures that pose a threat to their safety, especially the safety of children and the elderly. Evacuation orders and warnings were issued by the local authorities in the states of California, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, as well as British Columbia in Canada.

The severity of the extreme weather event has been pinned on human-caused global warming, and climate change is also heightening the risk of wildfires.

ومن جهتها، أصدرت هيئة الأرصاد الجوية الوطنية الأمريكية تحذيرات من ارتفاع درجات الحرارة في معظم أنحاء تلك المنطقة، وحذرت السكان من أن درجات الحرارة المرتفعة قد تمثل خطرا على صحتهم ولا سيما الأطفال الصغار وكبار السن.. بينما أصدرت السلطات المحلية أوامر إخلاء لمنازل العديد من السكان وتحذيرات في ولايات كاليفورنيا وأوريغون وأيداهو ومونتانا، وكذلك في كولومبيا البريطانية بكندا.

ويعزى الارتفاع الشديد في الحرارة إلى الاحترار العالمي الذي يسببه التلوث، كما أن تغير المناخ يزيد من خطر اندلاع حرائق الغابات.
