20 car drownings in Sealine over two months

Doha: Mr. Saud al-Ali, official of Sealine unit in the nature reserves sector of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, revealed that the cases of car sinking on the beaches of Sealine and Khor al-adaid reached 20 cases during the past two months, stressing that the frequency of car sinking incidents in the summer is due to higher water levels compared to winter and the increase of the incidence of the phenomenon of “sections” on the beach, a certain area of water extending and penetrating into the land, and some users of Sealine coastal road pass over that water thinking it is not deep and safe for the passage of the vehicle, but the opposite often occurs and they drown.

Al Ali called on beachgoers to leave a safe distance of at least 50 meters from the beach, especially since some visitors who are directly next to the beach think they are safe and do not feel the tide until it is too late and the water surrounds the vehicle from all directions making it difficult to return to land, which leads to its complete sinking in most cases, pointing out that the Coast Guard department immediately pulls the passengers of the car from inside the water to safety as volunteer rescue teams pull cars to the coast.

Al-Ali warned against relying on map apps for visitors to the Sealine and Khor al-adaid areas, which often give unsafe coordinates that drive the owner of the vehicle to dangerous routes over the water, advising not to drive across the coastal road during the summer, or to go with someone with experience in the Khor al-adaid and Sealine areas.

الدوحة: كشف السيد سعود العلي، مسؤول وحدة سيلين بقطاع المحميات الطبيعيّة بوزارة البلدية والبيئة، أن حالات غرق السيارات على شاطئَي سيلين وخور العديد بلغت 20 حالة خلال الشهرين الماضيين، مؤكدًا أن تكرار حوادث غرق السيارات في فصل الصيف يعود إلى ارتفاع منسوب المياه بشكل أعلى مُقارنة بفصل الشتاء وزيادة حدوث ظاهرة «المقاطع» على الشاطئ، وهي مساحة معينة من الماء تمتدّ وتتوغّل داخل اليابسة، وبعض مُستخدمي طريق سيلين الساحلي يقومون بالمرور من فوق تلك المياه ظنًا منهم أنها ليست عميقة وآمنة لمرور المركبة، لكن يحدث العكس في الغالب ويتعرّضون للغرق.

ودعا العلي روّاد الشواطئ إلى ترك مسافة آمنة لا تقلّ عن 50 مترًا من الشاطئ، خاصة أن بعض الزوّار ممن يتواجدون بجوار الشاطئ مُباشرة يظنون أنهم آمنون ولا يشعرون بحالة المدّ إلا بعد فوات الأوان ومُحاصرة المياه للمركبة من جميع الاتجاهات وصعوبة العودة إلى اليابسة؛ ما يؤدّي لغرقها بالكامل في معظم الحالات، لافتًا إلى أن إدارة خفر السواحل تقوم بانتشال ركاب السيارة فورًا من داخل المياه إلى بر الأمان كما تقوم فرق الإنقاذ التطوّعية بسحب السيارات إلى الساحل.

وحذّر العلي من اعتماد زوّار منطقتَي سيلين وخور العديد على برامج الخرائط الذي يُعطي غالبًا إحداثيات غير آمنة في الغالب تدفع صاحب المركبة للمرور في مسارات خطيرة فوق المياه، موجهًا نصيحة بعدم القيادة عبر الطريق الساحلي خلال فصل الصيف، أو الذهاب برفقة شخص لديه خبرة بمنطقتَي خور العديد وسيلين.
