A US Navy “doomsday” plane designed to survive nuclear warfare has been taken down by a bird.
The hi-tech E-6 Mercury aircraft is built to serve as an aerial base during all-out nuclear war — as a last resort tactic.
But a bird took out one of the plane’s four engines during a test flight, causing millions of dollars in damages, according to the Navy Times.
It has previously been described as the “deadliest plane you’ve never heard of”.
That’s despite the E-6 Mercury not carrying any weapons of its own.
Instead, it’s designed as a nuclear command-and-control plane.
It provides in-air communications in the event of nuclear war when ground commands are no longer possible.
The plane connects the US president and defence secretary to their arsenal of “boomer” submarines, air force bombers and intercontinental ballistic missile crews.
The bird incident took place at around 3.12pm on October 2, causing significant damage that has now been repaired.
“The engine has been replaced, and the aircraft has been returned to service,” said Tim Boulay, a spokesman for the Naval Air Warfare Centre Aircraft Division.
Mr Boulay also revealed that the navy didn’t “know for sure” what species of bird was involved.
The Naval Safety Centre officially recorded the incident as a “Class-A mishap”.
That means there were at least $US2 million ($A2.9 million) in damages to the aircraft.
It’s actually the second Class-A mishap experienced by an E-6B Mercury this year.
In February, the tail of the aircraft clipped the top of a hangar while it was being towed.
Only one person was aboard and no one was injured during the February incident, but the financial cost was still very high.
This is the latest of five Class-A mishaps involving a bird in the last decade.

والطائرة الأميركية “ميركوري ب-6 بي”، هي في الأصل طائرة بوينغ يطلق عليها “يوم القيامة”، مخصصة لإدارة شؤون العمليات النووية من الجو في حال وقوع هجوم نووي على البلاد.
وذكرت قناة “الحرة” أن الحادث وقع عندما هبطت الطائرة في قاعدة “ناس باكس ريفر” البحرية في ولاية ميريلاند يوم الثاني من أكتوبر الجاري، ثم أوقفها الطائر الذي اصطدم بواحد من محركاتها الأربعة.
وكانت عملية الهبوط جزءا من تدريب على ملامسة الأرض ثم التحليق دون توقف، وهو ما يطلق عليه اسم ” تاتش أند جو” .
واستدعى الحادث استبدال المحرك بمحرك آخر، ثم عادت الطائرة للعمل من جديد بعد تعطلها، بحسب المتحدث باسم قسم الطائرات بالبحرية الأميركية تيم بولاي، الذي قال إنه تم فتح تحقيق في الحادث.
ووصف بولاي الحادث بأنه حادث من “الدرجة الأولى”، أي أنه نتجت عنه أضرارا بقيمة 2 مليون دولار على الأقل، لكنه أشار إلى أنه لم يتعرض أي من الأشخاص الذين كانوا على متن الطائرة لأذى.
ويصل سعر هذه الطائرة التي أدخلتها البحرية في الخدمة عام 1998 حوالي 141 مليون دولار ويبلغ طولها حوالي 45 مترا وارتفاعها حوالي 19 مترا، وتستطيع السير بسرعة 900 كيلومتر في الساعة.
