Texas A&M University and American University of Beirut sign deal

Beirut: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the American University of Beirut (AUB) through its Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) and Texas A&M University (TAMU) including Texas A&M University at Qatar.

The purpose of this MoU is to set forth increased collaboration, cooperation, and interaction between both institutions, covering research agreements under the water, food, energy, health framework, teaming agreements, nondisclosure agreements, visiting scientist agreements, and more.

This MoU comes in recognition of the mutual benefit there is in cooperation and the development of closer relationships between AUB and TAMU. It will assist in enhancing the learning experiences of students (undergraduate and graduate) and researchers, by offering access to expertise and facilities that both universities have.

Through this MoU, the two universities intend to integrate and complement their capabilities available for the creation of strategic plans in order to promote research partnerships with focus on food-water-energy nexus and energy conservation systems. They also plan to set up opportunities for student exchange; define projects and pursue collaboration in areas of interest to the institutions; as well as encourage collaboration and cooperation on projects involving faculty and researchers.

Dean of Texas A&M University at Qatar, Dr Cesar Malave expressed his delight at the new opportunities offered by such partnerships, explaining that Texas A & M University in Qatar teaches engineering leaders who have the technical and professional skills to lead change in Qatar to an economy based on Knowledge.

He stressed that providing students with opportunities is an essential component to building these leaders of engineers to get the diverse experiences in different countries and cultures interacting with cultural changes, pointing out that this partnership will open new doors for students to participate in transformational educational experiences and build the human capacity to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030.

Dean of the College of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the American University of Beirut Dr. Rabi Muhtar commented: “Texas, the Middle East and North Africa share a lot of similarities with water, agriculture and energy systems, and the three geographical locations share their suffering from the pressures of urbanization and population growth.

“The University of Texas A & M and the American University of Beirut have great experience in the fields of agriculture, food, water, energy and health, as well as shared values of service and responsibility”, adding that the MOU will provide a platform for cooperation in research and student mobility in mutually beneficial areas.

وتهدف المذكرة إلى زيادة التعاون والتشارك، والتفاعل بين المؤسستين، وتغطية اتفاقيات البحوث في إطار المياه، والغذاء، والطاقة، والصحة، واتفاقيات التعاون، وعدم الإفصاح، واتفاقيات زيارات العلماء وغيرها.

وسوف تساعد هذه المذكرة في تعزيز خبرات التعلم لطلاب البكالوريوس والدراسات العليا والباحثين، من خلال إتاحة الوصول إلى الخبرات والمرافق التي تمتلكها الجامعتان.

كما تنوي الجامعتان دمج وإكمال قدراتهما المتوافرة لوضع خطط استراتيجية، من أجل تعزيز الشراكات البحثية مع التركيز على الربط بين الغذاء والمياه والطاقة وأنظمة الحفاظ على الطاقة، كما تخطط الجامعتان لتوفير فرص لتبادل الطلاب وتحديد المشروعات، ومتابعة التعاون في المجالات التي تهم المؤسستين، وكذلك تشجيع التشارك والتعاون في المشاريع التي تشمل الأساتذة والباحثين.

وبهذه المناسبة عبر الدكتور سيزار مالافي عميد جامعة تكساس إي آند إم في قطر عن سعادته بهذه الفرص الجديدة التي توفرها مثل هذه الشراكات، موضحاً أن جامعة تكساس إي آند إم في قطر تعلّمُ قادة الهندسة الذين يمتلكون المهارات الفنية والمهنية لقيادة التغيير في دولة قطر إلى اقتصاد قائم على المعرفة.

وأكد أن توفير الفرص للطلاب مكون أساسي لبناء هؤلاء القادة من المهندسين، ليحصلوا على الخبرات المتنوعة في البلدان والثقافات المختلفة، متفاعلين مع التغيرات الثقافية. مشيراً إلى أن هذه الشراكة ستفتح مع الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت أبواباً جديدةً للطلاب للمشاركة في التجارب التعليمية التحويلية، وبناء القدرة البشرية اللازمة للمساهمة في تحقيق الأهداف التي وضعتها الدولة لتحقيق رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030.

ومن جانبه علّق الدكتور ربيع المهتار عميد كلية العلوم الزراعية والغذائية في الجامعة الأميركية ببيروت قائلاً: «تشترك تكساس والشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا في الكثير من أوجه التشابه الإيكولوجي فيما بينها فيما يتعلق بالمياه، والزراعة وأنظمة الطاقة. كما تتشارك المواقع الجغرافية الثلاثة في معاناتها من ضغوط التحضّر والنمو السكاني».

وأضاف أن جامعة تكساس إي آند إم والجامعة الأميركية في بيروت تمتلكان خبرات كبيرة في مجالات الزراعة والغذاء والماء والطاقة والصحة، كما تشتركان في قيم الخدمة والمسؤولية، مشيراً إلى أن مذكرة التفاهم ستوفر منصة للتعاون في مجال الأبحاث وحركة الطلاب في المجالات المفيدة للطرفين.;
