Novel face mask can diagnose Covid-19 in 90 minutes

Scientists and researchers continue to develop techniques that help reduce the spread of Coronavirus in the hope of ending the Coronavirus pandemic. A group of scientists developed masks containing vital sensors that can diagnose and warn people with Coronavirus.
Scientists have found a way to incorporate synthetic biology interactions into fabrics, creating wearable biosensors and customize them to detect pathogens, toxins and alert wearers, according to Russia Today.
Scientists from the Wyss Institute of Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were able to weave the cloth with color-changing sensors when the SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected in the patient’s breath.
The team claims that the face mask gives results within 90 minutes at levels of accuracy similar to standard DNA-based diagnostic tests such as PCR reactions.
“We essentially reduced a fully diagnostic laboratory to a small sensor based on synthetic biology that works with any face mask, combining the high accuracy of PCR tests with the speed and low cost of antigen tests,” said Dr. Peter Nguyen, a research scientist at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute.
He noted that visible color change can also tell you when and where you have contracted the virus.
The mask is made of enzymes that interact with chemicals found in SARS-CoV-2.
It is powered by a button and remains normal until the virus enters the mask and reacts to enzymes, changing the color of part of it.
Dr. Nguyen and his team explained that the mask will change color from the inside to maintain privacy. “In addition to face masks, our biological sensors can be integrated into other clothing to provide detection on the go”.
Laboratory prototypes have only been manufactured so far, and the team hopes to find a factory to produce these face masks in large quantities.
The team highlighted that their technique could be integrated into laboratory coats for scientists dealing with hazardous substances or pathogens.

وتمكّن العلماء، من معهد Wyss للهندسة المستوحاة بيولوجيا بجامعة هارفارد ومعهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا، من نسج القماش بأجهزة استشعار يتغير لونها عند اكتشاف وجود فيروس SARS-CoV-2 في أنفاس المريض.
ويزعم الفريق أن قناع الوجه يعطي نتائج في غضون 90 دقيقة بمستويات دقة مماثلة لاختبارات التشخيص القياسية القائمة على الحمض النووي مثل تفاعلات البلمرة المتسلسلة (PCR).
وقال الدكتور بيتر نجوين، عالم الأبحاث في معهد Wyss بجامعة هارفارد: “قلصنا بشكل أساسي مختبرا تشخيصيا بالكامل إلى جهاز استشعار صغير قائم على البيولوجيا الاصطناعية يعمل مع أي قناع للوجه، ويجمع بين الدقة العالية لاختبارات تفاعل البوليميراز المتسلسل (PCR) مع السرعة والتكلفة المنخفضة لاختبارات المستضد”.
وأشار إلى أن تغير اللون المرئي يمكن أن يخبرك أيضا متى وأين أصبت بالفيروس.
والقناع مصنوع من إنزيمات تتفاعل مع المواد الكيميائية الموجودة في فيروس SARS-CoV-2.
ويتم تشغيله بواسطة زر ويظل طبيعيا حتى يدخل الفيروس القناع ويتفاعل مع الإنزيمات، ما يؤدي إلى تغيير لون جزء منه.
وأوضح الدكتور نجوين وفريقه أن القناع سيتغير لونه من الداخل للحفاظ على الخصوصية. وتابع: “بالإضافة إلى أقنعة الوجه، يمكن دمج أجهزة الاستشعار البيولوجية الخاصة بنا في الملابس الأخرى لتوفير إمكانية الكشف أثناء التنقل”.
وتم تصنيع نماذج أولية معملية فقط حتى الآن، ويأمل الفريق في العثور على مُصنِّع لإنتاج أغطية الوجه هذه بكميات كبيرة.
وسلط الفريق الضوء على أنه يمكن دمج تقنيتهم في معاطف المختبر للعلماء الذين يتعاملون مع المواد الخطرة أو مسببات الأمراض.
