Bats; flying reservoir for a new group of Coronaviruses

Chinese researchers announced, Thursday, that they had found a new group of Coronaviruses in bats, including a virus that may be the second genetically closest to the “Covid-19” virus.

The findings by researchers in one small area in southwestern China’s Yunnan Province show how many coronaviruses are in bats and how many have the ability to spread to humans, according to CNN.

Weifeng Shi and his colleagues from Shandong University collected samples of small, forest-dwelling bats between May 2019 and November 2020, and ran urine and fecal tests on them, as well as taking swabs from their mouths.

“In total, we assembled 24 new coronavirus genomes from different species of bats, including four SARS-Cove-2-like coronaviruses,” the researchers wrote in a report published in the journal Cell.

One of these viruses was genetically very similar to the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the current pandemic, a virus sample called “RpYN06” taken from a species of bat belonging to the horseshoe bat family, scientific name “Rhinolophus pusillus”.

The researchers explained that with the virus related to SARS-CoV-2 collected from Thailand in June 2020, these results clearly show that viruses closely related to SARS-CoV-2 continue to circulate in bat populations, and this may occur in some areas at a relatively high frequency.”

Researchers are trying to find the source of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Although a bat is a possible source, it is possible that the virus has infected an intermediate animal.

The SARS virus that caused the outbreak between 2002 and 2004 was traced back to an animal called a civet.

The researchers pointed out that bats are known reservoirs of a variety of viruses that cause serious diseases in humans, and have been associated with the spread of Hendra virus, Marburg virus, Ebola virus, and most notably Coronaviruses.

Aside from bats and humans, coronaviruses can infect a wide range of domestic and wild animals, including pigs, cattle, mice, cats, dogs, chickens, deer, and hedgehogs.”

“Our study highlights the remarkable diversity of bat coronaviruses at the local scale, including viruses that are close relatives of both SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV,” the researchers wrote.

Although there has been some debate about the origin of the Coronavirus pandemic, a WHO report said the most likely source was an animal – possibly a bat.

Some individuals hunt and eat bats, and those bats can infect other animals that people hunt and eat, and viruses can infect people when handling or slaughtering animals.
