The British Council and the British Embassy launch sixth British Festival in Qatar

Doha, 10 November 2019 – Today saw the opening of the sixth annual Qatar British Festival in Doha. The festival celebrates the strong and ongoing cultural relationship between Qatar and the United Kingdom.

The 2019 Festival was officially launched by Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Qatar, His Excellency Ajay Sharma, with H.E. Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara Cultural Village and Mrs Sam Ayton, Director British Council, Qatar.

The theme of this year’s festival is People and Place. Through the lens of public art, photography, music and film it will examine the impact of place on us and in turn, our impact on place and the long-lasting, positive effects of artistic exchange between the people of Qatar and the people of the United Kingdom. The festival will conclude with the Qatar-UK Alumni Awards; a celebration of the enduring success cultural exchange can bring to societies, through education.

Highlights from the Festival will include:

Every Thing Every Time; a public art installation by FutureEverything. This is a ground-breaking installation which blurs art and technology. It is real-time digital writing that takes data from its position a city and turns it into a constantly changing poem about the location. It examines concepts of the ‘Smart City’, urging deeper reflection on the role of data in our lives and the connection between a city, its citizens and the technology that runs it.

The Place I Call Home; a contemporary photography exhibition that explores the idea of ‘home,’ related to the experiences of young people living in the region and the UK at a time of rapid change and social mobility.
Elgar Enigma Variations; award-winning concert violinist, Savitri Grier performs two famous pieces by Edward Elgar, Enigma Variations and Violin Concerto, with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

HE Ajay Sharma, British Ambassador to Qatar, said: “The Qatar British Festival is a visible embodiment of the strong relationship between the UK and Qatar. It is a celebration of our cultures and through the various events on the programme it provides a unique and vibrant way of bringing people together. We are delighted that we are holding the Festival for its sixth year.”

H.E. Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation- Katara, commented: “We are very pleased to partner with the British Embassy and British Council for the 6th year in a row to make the Qatar British Festival come to life and allow people from all walks of life to explore how you can use arts as a lens to better understand each other’s cultures and learn from each other’s heritage. As a Strategic Cultural Partner of the Qatar British Festival, we look forward to hosting a part of the programme that helps our visitors explore the theme of ‘People and Place’”.

Sam Ayton, Director British Council Qatar, concluded: “Our birthplace, where and how we are schooled and the places we live, all make a lasting imprint on the people we are today. The theme of this year’s festival seeks to explore the intricate relationship between people and place and the enduring legacy that comes from cultural exchange”

The sixth Qatar British Festival highlights British Council’s work and commitment to encouraging people to experience arts and culture from the Gulf region and the UK, and to recognise the historical link between the two countries. Last year’s festival was a great success with over 130,000 participants and visitors across more than 20 cultural events, with many partnerships forged and furthered.

الدوحة – 10 نوفمبر 2019: شهد اليوم انطلاق فعاليات المهرجان البريطاني السنوي السادس في قطر ويمثل هذا المهرجان فرصة للاحتفاء بالعلاقات الثقافية الراسخة والمتينة والأواصر طويلة الأمد التي تربط بين دولة قطر والمملكة المتحدة.

وقد انطلقت فعاليات المهرجان لعام 2019 رسميًا على يد السفير البريطاني في قطر، سعادة السيد أجاي شارما، وسعادة الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي، المدير العام للمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي “كتارا“، والسيدة سام آيتون، مدير المجلس الثقافي البريطاني في قطر.

موضوع المهرجان لهذا العام هو “الناس والمكان“، فمن خلال عدسة الفن العام والتصوير الفوتوغرافي والموسيقى والأفلام، سوف نستكشف تأثير المكان علينا كبشر وبالتالي تأثيرنا نحن على المكان والآثار الإيجابية الطويلة الأمد للتبادل الفني بين شعب قطر وشعب المملكة المتحدة. وسوف يسدل الستار على المهرجان بحفل توزيع جوائز خريجي المملكة المتحدة في قطر الذي يحتفي بالنجاح المستمر الذي يمكن أن يحققه التبادل الثقافي للمجتمعات من خلال التعليم.

وسوف تتضمن أبرز فعاليات المهرجان ما يلي:

كل شيء كل مرة؛ وهو برنامج تفاعلي للفن العام من إبداعات الشريك البريطاني “فيوتشر إيفريثنج” يستكشف مفاهيم “المدينة الذكية“، ويحث على التأمل بشكل أعمق في دور البيانات في حياتنا. فبتحويل البيانات مفتوحة المصدر إلى قصاصات من الشعر للجمهور، يشجع هذا العمل الفني على توطيد وترسيخ الترابط بين المدينة ومواطنيها والتكنولوجيا التي تديرها.
المكان الذي أسميّه الوطن؛ وهو معرض للتصوير الفوتوغرافي المعاصر يدور حول استكشاف مفهوم “الوطن” لدى جيل الشباب الذين يعيشون في المنطقة والمملكة المتحدة وخبراتهم في زمن يتسم بالتغير السريع والحراك الاجتماعي.
تنويعات اللغز لإلجار؛ عازفة الكمان الشهيرة وحاصدة الجوائز سافيتري جرير ستؤدي قطعتين من أشهر مؤلفات إدوارد إلجار الموسيقية: “تنويعات اللغز” و “كونشرتو الكمان” مع أوركسترا قطر الفلهارمونية.

من جهته، صرح سعادة اجاي شارما، سفير المملكة المتحدة لدى قطر، قائلًا: “المهرجان البريطاني في قطر هو تجسيد حقيقي للعلاقة القوية والمتينة التي تربط بين المملكة المتحدة وقطر، إنه احتفال بثقافاتنا يربط الناس من خلال الفعاليات المختلفة في البرنامج بطريقة فريدة وحيوية. وإنه لمن دواعي سروري واعتزازي أننا ندعم المهرجان في عامه السادس“.

ومن جانبه، علق سعادة الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي، المدير العام للمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي “كتارا” قائلاً: “نحن سعداء للغاية بتلك الشراكة التي تجمعنا مع السفارة البريطانية والمجلس الثقافي البريطاني للعام السادس على التوالي لكي يخرج المهرجان البريطاني في قطر إلى النور وإتاحة الفرصة أمام الجميع من كافة مناحي الحياة لاستكشاف صور وأشكال استخدام الفنون كعدسة ترتقي بفهم الثقافات الأخرى والتعلم من تراث بعضهم البعض. وبصفتنا شريكًا ثقافيًا استراتيجيًا للمهرجان البريطاني في قطر، نتطلع إلى استضافة بعض فعاليات المهرجان مما يساعد زوارنا على استكشاف موضوع “الناس والمكان“.

وقد صرحت السيدة سام آيتون، مدير المجلس الثقافي البريطاني، قائلة: “ إن مكان ميلادنا ، وأين وكيف نتعلم وندرس والأماكن التي نعيش فيها ، كلها بصمات دائمة فيما آلت إليه شخصياتنا الآن. يسعى موضوع مهرجان هذا العام إلى استكشاف العلاقة المعقدة بين الناس والمكان والإرث الدائم الذي يتولد نتيجة التبادل الثقافي“.

تسلط النسخة السادسة من المهرجان البريطاني في قطر الضوء على عمل المجلس الثقافي البريطاني والتزامه بتشجيع الناس على تجربة الفنون والثقافة من منطقة الخليج والمملكة المتحدة والاحتفاء بالصلة التاريخية التي تربط بين البلدين. حقق المهرجان في العام الماضي نجاحًا عريضًا حيث شهد حضور ما يزيد عن 130.000 مشارك وزائر في أكثر من 20 فعالية ثقافية، مع إرساء وتعزيز العديد من الشراكات.
