Houston tiger found safe after missing for nearly a week

A 9-month-old tiger that went missing after being spotted on a Houston lawn has been found and appears to be unharmed, the Houston Police Department said Saturday.

The tiger, named India, was first seen roaming around a Houston neighborhood Sunday, wearing a collar and prowling outside a home. India will be transported to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. Black Beauty Ranch is also home to the tiger Loki, who was found in an abandoned in a cage in the Houston area two years ago.

Noelle Almrud, senior director of the ranch, said India will have his own habitat with about half an acre of land, which will include a wooded area and pool.

“Our goal is to provide him the best quality of life for the rest of his life,” Almrud said. “We hope he will spend the rest of his life at Black Beauty.”

India will undergo a 30-day quarantine and be examined by a staff veterinarian before being introduced to any other tigers at the sanctuary, Almrud said.

Black Beauty Ranch is run by the Humane Society, which has publicly supported the Big Cat Public Safety Act — pending legislation that would limit private ownership of such animals.

Several videos taken by residents showed the tiger coming face-to-face with an armed, off-duty Waller County sheriff’s deputy who lives in the neighborhood, The Associated Press reported. The deputy told police he was alerted about the tiger on Nextdoor, a neighborhood-based social media app.

وأضاف: إن «إنديا» الذي «يتمتع بصحة جيدة جدًا» سيودَع مأوى للحيوانات بالقرب من دالاس. وذكّر بأنه من غير القانوني امتلاك نمر في هيوستن، خلافًا للحال في بعض المقاطعات المُحيطة بالمدينة.

وأكد أن «الناس ينبغي ألا يحتفظوا بحيوان كهذا في منازلهم»، موضحًا أن «وزنه وهو بعد في شهره التاسع يبلغ 80 كيلوجرامًا، ويمكن تاليًا أن يصل وزنه إلى 270 كيلوجرامًا، ولديه مخالب ويمكن أن يُحدث الكثير من الضرر».
