Thinking outside the box: Masks that turn into flowers

Since the start of the anti-Coronavirus procedures, some uncivilised behaviors around the world have emerged: throwing used masks in the streets, increasing the risk of transmitting infection as well as damaging the environment because masks contain plastic materials that can take many years to decompose.

To overcome this problem in a wonderful and environmentally friendly way, a Dutch designer has created 100% biodegradable masks. Not only that, but they also turn into flowers.
“If we all have to wear masks anyway, let’s take the opportunity to do something good with them after wearing them,” designer Marianne de Groot-Pons said in an interview with CNN Arabic. For example, it can be planted and make the world bloom.
Designed by de Groot-Pons, the masks contain a variety of flowers that grow in the meadows, and you only have to plant the mask and provide water for it, as the designer stressed: “Be patient, during the summer, the flowers will appear”.
As for the materials from which these masks are made, they consist of rice leaf filled with flower seeds, and their strands placed around the ear are made of wool.
Small flowers, which are used to modify the narrowness of the threads and make them more suitable for one’s face, are made of egg cardboard boxes.
These masks will biodegrade in a “short period of time,” according to the designer.
Under the right circumstances, the masks disappear completely within a few weeks, and their seeds will germinate.
The designer stressed that her idea has received a lot of positive feedback, and so far, these masks are shipped to all EU countries, as well as the UK, but she hopes to be able to ship masks to the rest of the world as well soon.
de Groot-Pons’s masks are more environmentally friendly than single-use masks, which many people use during the pandemic to protect themselves from Covid-19.
منذ بدء إجراءات مكافحة كورونا، ظهرت بعض السلوكيات غير الحضارية حول العالم تتمثل في إلقاء الكمامات المستعملة في الشوارع مما يزيد خطر نقل العدوى وكذلك الإضرار بالبيئة بسبب احتوائها على مواد بلاستيكية دقيقة يمكن أن تستغرق أعوماً عديدة لتتحلل.

وللتغلب على هذه المشكلة بطريقة رائعة ومفيدة للبيئة، ابتكرت مصممة هولندية كمامات قابلة للتحلل بنسبة 100%.. ليس هذا فحسب بل إنها تتحول إلى زهور أيضاً.
في مقابلة مع موقع CNN بالعربية، قالت المصممة ماريان دي جروت-بونز: “إذا كان علينا جميعاً ارتداء الكمامات على أية حال، فلننتهز الفرصة لفعل شيء جيد معها بعد ارتدائها.. على سبيل المثال، يمكن زرعها وجعل العالم يزدهر”.
وتحتوي الكمامات التي صممتها دي جروت-بونز على مزيج من الزهور التي تنبت في المروج، وليس عليك سوى زراعة الكمامة، وتوفير الماء لها، إذ أكدت المصممة: “تحلى بالصبر، وخلال الصيف، ستظهر الأزهار”.
وبشأن المواد التي تشكل منها هذه الكمامات، فهي تتكون من ورق الأرز المليء ببذور الزهور، وتتكون خيوطها التي توضع حول الأذن من الصوف.
وأما الزهور الصغيرة التي تُستخدم لتعديل ضيق الخيوط، وجعلها تناسب وجه المرء بشكل أكبر، فهي مصنوعة من الصناديق الكرتونية المخصصة للبيض.
وتتميز هذه الكمامات بكونها قابلة للتحلل في “فترة زمنية قصيرة”، وفقاً للمصممة.
وفي ظل الظروف المناسبة، تختفي الكمامات تماماً في غضون أسابيع قليلة، وتنبت بذورها.
وأكدت المصممة أن فكرتها تلقت الكثير من ردود الفعل الإيجابية، وحتى الآن، تُشحن هذه الكمامات إلى جميع دول الاتحاد الأوروبي، إضافةً إلى المملكة المتحدة، ولكنها تأمل أن تتمكن من شحن الكمامات إلى بقية العالم أيضاً قريباً.
وتُعد الكمامات التي صممتها دي جروت-بونز صديقة للبيئة بشكل أكبر مقارنةً بالكمامت ذات الاستخدام الواحد، التي يلجأ إليها الكثير من الأشخاص في ظل الجائحة لحماية أنفسهم من فيروس “كوفيد-19”.
