QNL expo highlights importance of gardens in Islam

DOHA: Qatar National Library (QNL) yesterday opened a three-month long “The Gardens of Al Andalus Exhibition” under the patronage of H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, QNL.

The exhibition is created by the Islamic Culture Foundation of Madrid (FUNCI) and it highlights the importance of gardens in Islam and displays the plants, tools, and gardening methods used by Muslims in Andalusia.

The exhibition was brought to Qatar by the Qur’anic Botanic Garden after it has been successfully exhibited in various countries in the Mediterranean and the Arabian Gulf.

The exhibition is part of FUNCI’s ‘Med-O-Med, Cultural Landscapes of the Mediterranean and the Middle East’ network.

Al Andalus generally refers to the area of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Muslims from the 8th century to the 15th century, which gave its name to the modern region of Andalusia in southern Spain.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Library has uncovered various manuscripts, photographs, and rare books related to the topic.

The exhibition will display multiple scale models depicting the most significant gardens of Al Andalus, as well as numerous olfactory devices, which allow one to sample some of the botanical species, used at the time.

The exhibition has recreated a series of 3-metre-tall towers displaying botanic species, historical drawings, and the ancient botanical sheets that reference Al Andalus’ gardens, orchards, and properties.

The towers evoke the wind towers common in the traditional architecture of the Arabian Peninsula, which were used to naturally cool and ventilate buildings. The models represent the different types of Andalusian gardens, as well as water mills.

Talking to The Peninsula during the opening of the exhibition, Ines Elexpuru, Director of communications at FUNCI, said: “Islam is not only what you see in media, it’s something that comprises medication, relaxation and peacefulness through different mediums.

“One of the mediums is nature. We are a platform spanning 23 countries which aim at the preservation of the region’s natural and cultural heritage, as well as development and education.

“This exhibition speaks of its own history and splendour through its gardens which include, open, multicultural spaces in which the scientific influences and the landscapes of East and West came together over the centuries.”

“Gardens and the natural world are an important part of Islam, and the gardens of Andalusia represent a unique blend of Arabic and European cultures. This exhibition explores the botanical, architectural, scientific, spiritual, and artistic aspects of these gardens to present a holistic view of these important cultural and historical creations,” said Dr. Sohair Wastawy, Executive Director, QNL.

Ada Romero Sanchez, Special Collection and Exhibitions Coordinator at QNL, said: “This exhibition presents the library’s visitors with an opportunity to learn about the Islamic civilisation’s unique approach to preserving nature.

“The design and content of the exhibition also allow visitors to learn about the historical interconnections between Spain, Qatar, and the wider Muslim world. We invite everyone to visit the exhibition and also make use of the Library’s wealth of other resources.”

President of FUNCI, Dr. Cherif Abderrahman Jah, said: “Al Andalus was a veritable laboratory for the study and dissemination of the Islamic sciences, inspired by the Holy Qur’an, and one of the greatest examples of peaceful co-existence between cultures.”`

تحت رعاية سعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني رئيسة مجلس أمناء مكتبة قطر الوطنية، تستضيف المكتبة معرض حدائق الأندلس، خلال الفترة من 7 يونيو إلى 7 سبتمبر 2018. ويُسلّط المعرض الضوء على أهمية الحدائق في الإسلام، ويقدم النباتات، والأدوات، وطرق البستنة التي استخدمها المسلمون في عصر الأندلس، أثناء حكمهم شبه الجزيرة الإيبيرية من القرن الثامن إلى الخامس عشر الميلادي.

يُقام المعرض، الذي أنشأته مؤسسة الثقافة الإسلامية في مدريد، ضمن فعاليات شبكة «المشهد الثقافي للبحر المتوسط والشرق الأوسط» التي تضم 23 دولة؛ بهدف الحفاظ على تراثنا الطبيعي والثقافي، وكذلك استغلاله في التنمية والنهضة والتطوير والتعليم. وبالتزامن مع المعرض، الذي نظمته حديقة القرآن النباتية في قطر بعد نجاحه في عدة دول بالشرق الأوسط والخليج، ستقدم مكتبة قطر الوطنية العديد من المخطوطات والصور الفوتوغرافية والكتب النادرة المرتبطة بالموضوع، إلى جانب مجموعة من النماذج المصغرة التي تصور أبرز الحدائق المهمة في الأندلس، وكذلك العديد من أجهزة الشم المتنوعة التي تتيح للزائرين استنشاق رائحة بعض أنواع النباتات المستخدمة في هذه الحدائق في ذلك الوقت.

يتضمن المعرض سلسلة من الأبراج التي يبلغ طول كل منها 3 أمتار، وتعرض أنواع النباتات، والرسومات التاريخية، والأوراق النباتية القديمة التي تشير إلى الحدائق والبساتين والمنشآت في عصور الأندلس. وتجسد هذه الأبراج «ملاقف الهواء» التي كانت سمة شائعة في العمارة التقليدية لشبه الجزيرة العربية، وكانت وسيلة طبيعية لتهوية المباني وتبريدها. وتعكس هذه النماذج اختلاف أنواع الحدائق والطواحين المائية في عصر الأندلس.

وقالت الدكتورة سهير وسطاوي، المدير التنفيذي للمكتبة: «تحظى الحدائق والطبيعة الخضراء بأهمية كبيرة في الإسلام، وتعكس حدائق الأندلس جانباً فريداً من الثقافة العربية والأوروبية، وهذا المعرض الفريد من نوعه يستكشف الجوانب النباتية والمعمارية والعلمية والروحية والفنية لهذه الحدائق، مُقدِّماً نظرة كلية وشاملة لهذه الإبداعات الثقافية والتاريخية المهمة».

ومن جانبها، قالت آدا روميرو، منسقة المجموعات الخاصة والمعارض في المكتبة: «يقدم المعرض لزائري المكتبة فرصة للتعرف على المنهج الفريد للحضارة الإسلامية في الحفاظ على الطبيعة. ويتيح تصميم المعرض ومحتواه للزائرين التعرف على الترابط التاريخي بين إسبانيا وقطر والعالم الإسلامي بأسره. إننا ندعو الجميع لزيارة المعرض، والاستفادة من مصادر المكتبة المختلفة ومرافقها المتطورة».

وتحدث الدكتور شريف عبد الرحمن جاه، رئيس مؤسسة الثقافة الإسلامية في مدريد، عن المعرض قائلاً: «كان عصر الأندلس بمثابة مختبر حقيقي لدراسة ونشر العلوم الإسلامية التي ألهمها القرآن الكريم، وواحداً من أروع النماذج على التعايش السلمي بين الثقافات. ولهذا تعتبر مؤسسة الثقافة الإسلامية معرض حدائق الأندلس الصورة المجازية التي تساعد على استعادة بذور القيم الكامنة في الإسلام، وتدعو كل المسلمين في شهر رمضان الكريم لإحياء الرسائل التي جاءت في القرآن الكريم، من تكريم قيمة الأمة العربية والإسلامية، والحاجة إلى استعادة توازنها ومكانتها بين أمم العالم».;
