The British mutated strain of Covid-19 has reached 60 countries

Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Wednesday that Britain’s muted strain of the new coronavirus has so far been detected in at least 60 countries, 10 more than a week ago.

The second mutated version, which first appeared in South Africa and is believed to be more contagious than the British version, has been detected in 23 countries and regions to date, three more than on January 12th, WHO said in its weekly publication on the state of the epidemic.

It noted that it was monitoring the spread of two other strains that appeared in Brazil, The B1, which had been detected in the State of Amazonas and also detected in Japan in four people who came from Brazil and another mutant.

“Currently, there is little information available to determine whether the virus’s viability and severity have changed in these mutated forms,” it said. However, it noted that their genetic characteristics similar to the mutated virus in Britain and South Africa require further studies.

The mutated strain, recorded in Britain in mid-December, is 50 to 70 percent more contagious than the original new virus found in the six WHO’s geographical regions. The mutated virus in South Africa is found in only four regions, which have not been identified by WHO.

The two mutated versions of the virus are faster spread but not more dangerous. However, they are putting increasing pressure on health systems, which in some countries, such as Britain and the United States, appear to be on the verge of exploding.

The effectiveness of vaccines against them is being questioned, but so far nothing has shown that the products used so far are less effective.

The Covid-19 epidemic has killed more than 2 million people worldwide.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the number of deaths increased by 9 percent in the week ending January 17th, compared with the previous week. They reached a record 93,000 deaths.

جنيف: أعلنت منظمة الصحة العالمية الأربعاء أنّ النسخة البريطانية المتحوّرة من فيروس كورونا المستجدّ رُصدت حتى الآن في 60 دولة على الأقلّ، أي أكثر بعشر دول مما كان عليه الوضع قبل أسبوع.

وقالت المنظمة في نشرتها الأسبوعية حول وضع الوباء إنّ النسخة المتحوّرة الثانية التي ظهرت للمرة الأولى في جنوب أفريقيا ويعتقد أنّها أكثر عدوى من النسخة البريطانية رُصدت من جهتها في 23 دولة ومنطقة لغاية اليوم، بزيادة ثلاث عن العدد الذي سجل في 12 يناير.

وأشارت إلى أنها تراقب انتشار نوعين آخرين ظهرا في البرازيل وهما “بي1” الذي رصد في ولاية أمازوناس واكتشف أيضا في اليابان لدى أربعة أشخاص قادمين من البرازيل ومتحول آخر.

وتابعت “حاليا لا يوجد سوى القليل من المعلومات المتاحة لمعرفة ما إذا كانت قابلية الفيروس للانتشار وخطورته تبدلت لدى هذه الأشكال المتحورة”. لكنها أشارت إلى أن خصائصها الجينية المشابهة للفيروسين المتحورين في بريطانيا وجنوب إفريقيا تتطلب دراسات أخرى.

والنسخة المتحورة التي سجلت في بريطانيا في منتصف ديسمبر قادرة على العدوى بنسبة أكبر بخمسين إلى سبعين بالمئة من الفيروس المستجد الأصلي وموجود في المناطق الجغرافية الست لمنظمة الصحة العالمية. أما الفيروس المتحور لجنوب إفريقيا فموجود في أربع مناطق فقط، لم تحددها المنظمة.

والنسختان المتحورتان من الفيروس أسرع انتشارا لكنهما ليستا أكثر خطورة. إلا أنهما تسببان زيادة في الضغط على النظم الصحية التي تبدو في بعض البلدان مثل بريطانيا والولايات المتحدة على وشك الانفجار.

وتطرح تساؤلات عن فعالية اللقاحات ضدها لكن لا شيء حتى الآن يدل على أن المنتجات المستخدمة حتى الآن أقل فعالية.

وأدى وباء كوفيد-19 إلى وفاة أكثر من مليوني شخص في العالم.

وتشير منظمة الصحة العالمية إلى أن عدد الوفيات ارتفع بنسبة 9 بالمئة في الأسبوع الذي انتهى في 17 يناير بالمقارنة مع السبوع الذي سبقه. وقد بلغا عددا قياسيا هو 93 ألف وفاة.
