Italian ‘king of absentees’ allegedly skipped work for 15 years

For 15 years, an Italian man was paid without going to his workplace, where Salvador Skomas, 67, received up to 538,000 euros in wages without setting foot at the workplace all this time, al-JazeeraNet reported.

Salvador continued to receive his salary after being absent from his job for 15 years, being appointed as a fire safety officer at Calabria General Hospital, and in the meantime, an investigation by the Financial Division into suspicious fraud enabled the details of the incident to be revealed.
According to the investigation, some executives at the institute agreed to cover up his deception.
The magazine indicated that Salvador threatened the President of the Foundation to force him to cancel the disciplinary report counting the repeated absences of the staff member.
To succeed, Salvador Skomas resorted to a policy of intimidation and threatened his boss and family if he did not collude with him.
When he left office, no one took over the case. As a result, the fictitious employee was able to continue his fraud with impunity for years.
The man continued his game all this time, with no one realizing his deception, neither foundation officials nor the head of the Human Resources Office noticed that he was missing. This is not the first time that the country has been affected by the phenomenon of absenteeism in the public sector.
For example, in 2016, the Italian government tightened its labour legislation after several police investigations revealed the extent of the scourge.
Salvador Skomas will be prosecuted for forgery, abuse of power and aggravated extortion. In addition, hospital officials are under investigation for negligence.
Fictitious workers are expected to cost Italy 12 billion euros, and to alleviate this scourge, a single finger print drip system has been put in place that allows only one pass.

واستمر الرجل في لعبته طيلة هذا الوقت، حيث لم يتفطن أحد إلى خدعته. ولم يلاحظ مسؤولو المؤسسة ولا رئيس مكتب الموارد البشرية أنه مفقود. وليست هذه هي المرة الأولى التي تتأثر فيها البلاد بظاهرة التغيب في القطاع العام.
